Grok Headphones in Fullness

  1. So I am in the market for some closed headphones. I have heard grado's and like them, have heard AKG'S and like them. Read a few forum posts on HF and ran across the AKG 270P's. Since I have a pair of Sextett's and I like them, I thought maybe the 270P's might be a good fit. However, I trust the opinions on this forum a lot more than the stuff I read over at that "other" forum. So has anyone heard the AKG K270 Playback's? Anyone own a pair? I listen to a lot of different types of music, but I would use my closed cans for rock, hip-hop, and the occasional jazz session. Any opinions and recommendations are greatly appreciated.

  2. Started by DannyB,

In general, when a headphone amp is on should it have a load:Specifically, headphones plugged in as is usually required of speaker amps having speakers connected?

  3. Started by recstar24,

What options are currently out there for hi end iem's? I do not want to bother going through the HF thread. Please chime in if you have any thoughts or experiences to share. All I am aware of are the UE customs.

  4. Started by DannyB,

I have a KGSS and SR007 Mk2. I usually leave my KGSS on all the time. Is it best to leave the headphones plugged into the KGSS all the time to allow full charge or to just plug them in a little while before a listening session?

  5. Started by blubliss,

Check out the state of my R10s after I got them back. I am pretty sure they were like this before they went out on loan. The foam has completed melted/congealed into a sticky mess on the wood around the drivers. There is even a bit on the driver grills. I sent these pics to Alex to see if he was willing to resurrect them. I can get new pads and foam from Mikhail. Please let's have a moment of silence for the speedy recovery of my R10s .

  6. Started by Dusty Chalk,

see bottom of page I've actually known about these since October, but missed the fact that it was public information.

  7. I just received confirmation from Drew/Moon Audio that he will be bringing the HD 800 and Ultrasone ED8. So, if you're in the general area come check out these new cans and meet Joe Grado. 8. Started by oogabooga,

I had a chance to demo some HD380s yesterday (through an Apogee Mini-DAC). I listened to some rock (Tragically Hip) and Gordon Downie's voice sounded "hollowed out", like part of his voice was missing. Trebles were weak. Bass, on the other hand, was good, but I'm not a bass-head. I listened to a few more rock and electronic tracks but it was pretty clear to me that none of my music was going to sound like music with these cans. Isolation and fit were both good, not that it really matters. My search for closed cans continues...

  9. I wonder if these headphones can do well with Japanese music. Ultrasone PRO750 & ED.9 Fail. Denon Marklblabla Fail. Sennheiser HD600 & HD650 Epic Fail. Grado RS-1 Fail. Audio-Technica W5000 & AD2000 Fail. AKG K701 Fail. Alessandro MS-Pro Epic Fail. Etymotic ER4S Pass.

  10. Would these sound half decent as a system? I listened to K 701's a long time ago and kind of thought they sounded like ass*. Would having killer power on these babies do anything for them, or do they still sound like ass after "burn-in" and Nuculer Power. * ass as in they could not rock out. They were very dull sounding, even after about 1,000 hours of burn-in when running out of my amp. The sins of the K 701, in my opinion, are sins of omission. Perhaps Wes Phillips' ears are made of tin...

Good morning, my first post here, Jan. 1st 2009. I'm looking ofr Sony MDR CD 3000 earpad : mine are curiously deteriorating. My Sony dealer asks here a 100 euros for these. A bit steep. Is there some place in the US or Europe where I could find it for less ? Regards Stampes

I got home from work to find a box from the UK on my desk. Yippie! I hooked up the pig tail to my amps speaker taps, and plugged the 4 pin socket of the K1000 into that. Turned on my Beta22 and no sound. Hmmm let's see now, the amp seems to be working fine, the speaker adapter is hooked up right, what's missing? Oh yeah, maybe it's that thing that spins CDs that I just shipped out yesterday! My phono stage still has hum issues with my SUT, and the temporary phono stage I was using went tits up. So maybe selling my CD transport would have been better delayed a week or so. Well the new CDP is due to arrive Saturday. It's gonna be an eternity.

  13. Started by Neusdoorn,

So, one of the main reasons I finally joined Head-Case (after reading here and the other place for ages) was that my friend asked me to help him find an IEM. He's got a Christmas bonus and wants to spend a portion on an IEM that'll improve his bus ride into work. I'm wholly ignorant to portable audio (Barring my PX100 and XM5, which I only have because they're "transportable" with my laptop.) and thusly can't really make any good recommendations. I came here because I don't want to be recommended whatever the flavor of the month is and then be told it's junk a month later. As far as what I think he'd like: Comfort's a must, as his bus ride isn't short. Isolat…

  14. Started by Asr,

I've heard both but not at the same time and the times were too far apart, hence my own experience fails. Anyone else heard these and compared them? Normally I'd just go ahead and buy an SA5000 to find out but funds are running pretty low for me right now, was wondering how much percentage of the Qualia the SA5000 offers. I love the Qualia but it's an awful lot of money to keep to one headphone.

  15. Started by d_rayman,

I am very curious about the LA7000 from Markl but can't find any reviews of it from our members. Anyone tries it?

  16. Started by Dusty Chalk,

Anyone? They're closed, so I am, of course, curious. Stereophile has a review of the MS 400 in the current issue. The red makes it moar bettar. But I, of course, am interested in the moar black PS 500.

Hi Everyone I need everyone's opinions. Right now I am considering the sony Qualia 010 and saw one popped up for sale on Head-Fi.org: Headphones, iPod earphones, portable audio, MP3 players, high-end audio . However, I really dont know how much the headphone is worth nowadays because it is really rarely appeared on the used market. The trick is that the owner also wants to sell his M size headband . Any opinions? Many thanks

On the other site someone is claiming that they got an email from Sennheiser that a new can called the HD800 will be coming out early part of next year. New Sennheiser Headphone - HD800 - Head-Fi: Covering Headphones, Earphones and Portable Audio Here is his post: I e-mailed Sennheiser to ask them if they were developing/releasing a new headphone. 3-5 days later I got this response. Thank you for your interest! Yes, their is a new model The HD800 coming next year... They planning early next year. I wil keep you inform since I have a few who adressed me their interest. 21. Started by Dreadhead,

Hi everyone: I'm thinking of getting a pair of these: Stereo microphones, USB Microphones, Preamplifiers, Digital Recorders, Cables and more at Rock Bottom Prices from The Sound Professionals - Great deals on Microphone, Preamplifier, Digital Recorder, Cable and more! and then using the convolver plugin for Foobar to turn a pair of headphones (say HD650s) into a pair of R10s (if I can get a measurement on a pair). I can sort of do the same thing already with my equalizer but a convolution based method would capture a lot more of the intricacies than my method would. I think it's likely that it could even capture the effects of the tubes in the line etc which woul…

  22. I'm finally in the market for some new headphones, and I think I've got it narrowed down. I'm looking at either Audio Technica's W1000 headphonse or their AD1000PRM headphones. The only difference I know is that the W1000s are slightly more expensive and are closed rather than open. What I don't know is whether the headphones being closed is a bad thing in terms of sound accuracy... since sometimes it seems that can cripple a pair of cans. Basically, I'm looking for something that'll work especially well for orchestral/classical sorts of music. I'm slightly concerned about the bass being underpowered... I don't need to have my eardrums dominated by bass, but it's g…

  23. Started by The Monkey,

So my bro wants IEMs between 200 and 300 bucks that have substantial amounts of bass. I'm not necessarily talking about the tight, coherent bass that many of us like, but rather the bloated one-note bass that the kids seem to love so much. As a point of reference, he liked the super.Fi 5 EB, but they're too bid for his taste. Whaddya think?

Story from Engadget about Apple's new ear buds. Here is the story below: Remember those new in-ear headphones we heard about from Mr. Jobs himself back in September? Well, he promised them for October (see the giant slide behind him), and here we are, in December, and they've finally appeared. Each earbud's got its own woofer and tweeter, so be prepared for Master of Puppets to sound better than ever. They've got a built-in remote and mic -- yet curiously aren't compatible with the iPhone -- and they come with three sets of interchangeable silicone tips for small, medium, and large ears. Are you rocked to the very core of your existence yet? Well, the $79 price …
