Grok Headphones in Fullness

  1. Started by spritzer,

I’m going to post this in its own thread as so many people are asking me for X9000 impressions, and it makes sense to have them somewhere where they are easy to find. I was also going to take some pictures to add to this review but I’m just wiped. Might add some later if these ever present storms let up for some good light. I’ve now had the SR-X9000 here for over a week so time for a writeup... as my email inbox is full of people asking for just that. 🙂 First impressions were very promising, the build quality is superb, and those drivers are just a marvel to behold. I do like the new replaceable cables even, though it is a bit of a copy of the King Sound set…

OK - putting the neck on the chopping block here! I have the SRD-7 with the Spritzer Professional bias board, so, in effect, an SRD-7 Pro. Love the sound with the Sigma/404 and driven by a Studer A68. The bottom end is nicely in control (as Birgir has said happens with upscale amplification ala Blue Hawaii SE or that ilk), and there is more of the power that these earspeakers have in spades. They seem to convey the "oomph" of the performance much better than any other Stax I've heard. Although the Lambda Nova Signature/SRM-Monitor is probably more technically neutral, this combination seems to get a natural sound out of most recordings, just as Naotake Hayashi mentioned.…

Hello Everyone, Stax noob here. I'm fairly new to electrostatics, but I did do my research before upgrading from my SRM-3. I managed to snag a 717 in what seems to be extremely good condition for around 670 USD a couple months ago. I've been really enjoying it, but I want to make sure the thing will last. I've read several times now that the electrolytic caps are a concern with aging Stax amps, and I want to know if they are any parts that need to be replaced in my unit in the near future. I'm also interested in making upgrades if possible and converting my unit from 100V input to 120V, but those are less of a concern. I cracked the amp open and pulled of the de…

Head-Case exclusive! The result of Round 1 of the Stax vs. Senn battle is not pretty. The HD600 lies wounded, in two pieces and sans cable. To add insult to injury, the Airbow SR-SC1 and Lambda Pro have taken the HD600 and HD650 boxes for their own use.

I have a KGSS and SR007 Mk2. I usually leave my KGSS on all the time. Is it best to leave the headphones plugged into the KGSS all the time to allow full charge or to just plug them in a little while before a listening session?

  8. I quickly browsed through an article about headphone measurements in this month's Stereophile. It's worth a look.

But since it's my birthday, maybe someone can help without whipping me for being so stupid and lazy... "Hey Wayne. Can you recommend a set of in-ear monitor for my motorcycle helmet communication system in the $200 ballpark. I’m not listening to music on them; purely for Atom use for driver <-> passenger communication, and the occasional phone call. I’m looking for something that I can comfortably wear inside a helmet for hours at a time. Thanks. Nick. PS. How are you, I haven’t heard from you in a while." Seems to me that he's looking for custom IEMs on the lowest end of the food chain. Some…

  13. I just got my MrSpeakers Aeon headphones yesterday. I ordered them with an XLR termination on the cable terminated assuming this meant I could use them with the balanced/XLR output on the GS-X. Then I opened the box and saw it said the headphone was a “single-ended planar magnetic headphone.” I’m confused. Is it fine to use with a balanced output? Is there any benefit? I can order the cable with a SE termination which would be better for portable use anyway.

I'm pretty sure everyone has done this at one time. Hung onto a headphone or piece of gear that You want to like, but don't. Mine is a q701 I bought used 12 years ago real cheap. Cheap because it smelled like an ashtray. Pulled it apart and cleaned it well, and did the bass port mod. I don't like the sound. Put it away and then tried it out again when I changed DACs and amps. I still don't like it. I'm trying real hard to make myself get rid of it. It's hard to be a horder.

  15. Started by AlanY,

I've been thinking of picking up a pair of closed headphones again. I used to own the Beyer DT250-250 a long time ago based on Headroom's ancient recommendation and liked them. Tried the AKG K271S when it first came out and liked the midrange but disliked the strange quality of what bass there was (no impact at all). Haven't really been following closed cans since. There's a thread on Head Case about closed cans but it's somewhat dated. It looks like the HD25-1 II was the flavor of the month on the other site for a while and has a persistent following. I listened to this at the local dealer out of a NAD integrated (not the greatest audition, obviously) and felt that the b…

Hi, I've spent the last week or so reading numerous reviews/forums for headphones and amps as I would very much like to upgrade from my current setup. Currently my headphones are some ath a700's that are falling apart. I don't own an amp or dac yet and the sound card I use is an x-fi titanium card I got for free from a friend of mine about a year ago. Future upgrades are certainly possible, but for the moment my budget is around $400-500. But this is flexible. I am new to this, especially in experience with different setups. Comfort is also a concern of mine as I will be wearing these very often. Some headphones I've looked a bit further into/am interested in at…

So, I've seen some oblique references to "Duggeh's" surrounder (I think). What's the story? It's not like they don't exist. To wit: Zalman; Tritton; I'm pretty sure I've others.

  18. Started by Nanoha,

So I was thinking we could create some sort of synergy list. Basically, combos that work well? There are a few threads on Head-Fi of "ultimate rigs", but how about a list that also includes non-ultimate gear. Haha. Or generalizations (for example, the A-T woodies work well with blah blah). Of course, everyone's opinion is different so basically your list reflects your own opinion, and this compilation will be for fun. Medium-class rigs could also be noted. So for an example, devwild and a number of other members like the SA5K with the M^3 even though this setup isn't as high-end as a SDS XLR and HD650. The focus is synergy so this isn't necessarily limited to the highest…

  19. Well, After upgrading my Denon 3910 with the SACDmod + adding few extra blackgates around the dac for good measure, and recabling my K701s with mogami quad, now my system is quite a bit brighter, mostly due to the recable. 909 thought something was off with the recabled K701s which are now fatiguing. Iron_Dreamer and I also thought the high freqs sounded fatiguing when listening to Tylls recabled (cardas) K701s at the So Cal meet. I dismissed it as bad cable (cardas), but now that my K701s have the same problem with the mogami, I think AKG used the cheap-ass wire they did, to tame the highs and cover up the deficiency in that area. Now my tinnitus is flairing…

I hate to post about headphones on a booze and light banter site, but these might actually be interesting (T+A is a very German, engineering-driven audio concern) and are reassuringly expensive at $6400. The DAC/amp is apparently $8900. https://www.ta-hifi.de/en/musicreengineered-solitaire/

  24. Started by Stoffie,

Hi guys, found my way here through another thread in another subforum. Have been drooling for years over a Sony MDR-R10 (bit of a Sony vintage gear fan), but there is no way I could afford it back in the '90, and still can't at the prices these go for nowadays. But anyway, as a kid I used to listen a lot through my dad's headphones, a pair of Telefunken TH-700 orthodynamic headphones, which I've always liked a lot. They were pretty expensive and Telefunken's TOTL offering in the late 70's. Unfortunately, through the years, the leather cushionpads have deteriorated badly, so they are not at all comfortable anymore to wear. I recently rediscovered these in a box…
