Grok Headphones in Fullness

  1. Started by spritzer,

Now here is something fun... a new electrostatic set from Russia. I do read the Russian forums a bit and I've been following the semi-DIY stuff going on over there. Seeing that this one had matured I decided buy one. Here is the website for anybody interested: http://phenomenon.su/ I ordered it directly and this set was custom made for me. They have two versions available and I picked the Libratum as I prefer circular transducers. Cost was less than 2k$ with shipping here. As you might tell from the pics, the build quality is super impressive and makes most other headphones look like toys. I for one like the Russian utilitarian style where it is all a…

I just bought a pair and love them. I know that they aren't liked very much around here but can't for the life of me figure out why?

Hi everyone, That surely has been awhile (again)! I wanted to say hi and ask a question since I'm browsing the boards a little again (probably not for long). I hope you're all doing fine! I still see quite a bit of familiar names around here, the only person I've missed so far is Vicky. As some of you have seen over at the other side I'm currently in the process of selling my ED9s, yes the time has finally come! Seeing that I started out with the 750s and (finally) noticing a lot of bad things happening) I felt at the time the ED9s were a great step up. It actually had something that could go for a midrange. Add more speed detail etc to the mix and I thought it w…

Whitney's got my LCD3s right now and they are slated to go to Christian next week. I put Frank on the list because I know he is interested (he hasn't gotten back to me). Let me know if anyone in the Bay Area wants to borrow them for a week. Maybe a couple more slots - I'm not itching to get them back soon or anything. I would prefer that they be picked-up or dropped-off rather than mailed. I figure this would be a good way for folks to hear the most perfect headphones evar! Head-Case exclusive! The result of Round 1 of the Stax vs. Senn battle is not pretty. The HD600 lies wounded, in two pieces and sans cable. To add insult to injury, the Airbow SR-SC1 and Lambda Pro have taken the HD600 and HD650 boxes for their own use.

  7. Followed both topics where these headphones are trashed. So given that, what would be a good pair of portable (as in not massive sized), reasonably isolating bass emphasised phones around that same price range? The only other phone I've stumbled upon that fits into that category is the ATH-ESW9s and they don't supposedly isolate well, and cost a fortune. The MS2s/325is are said to be more balanced but still with loads of bass, yet they're not closed either and have an even more narrow soundstage than the Denons or Ultrasones supposedly ... ^^ (this is all based on hear-say of course ... )

Its announcement has seemed to have been ignored here, but IMO, this is a very special headphone. I own the W1000X, and acknowledge its faults, but there is no comparison between the two. If you love opera, female vocals, chamber music, etc. I am sure you will love the W3000ANV.

Bought a bad tube off of eBay, and it looks like something happened and it fried my right driver. I thought it was just the tube, but a few days later when I powered my amp back up with new tubes, the problem was still there. Its hard to imagine this pair being busted: it was the third headphone I bought and the only one I kept. It's been with me since 2005. Anyway, anyone ever have any experience with Sennheiser after warranty repairs? Was wondering if its worth it to mess with them or if I should just scope out a used pair, or upgrade to the HD800. Currently I'm rocking the KSC75 out of the HA-2, and it sounds great.

  10. Hi guys, during the last five years, so many new TOTL headphones appeared in the market that I got totally lost how they compare. Because every brand claims that its own TOTL headphone is the best of the world. But also reviewers and people from the forums claim very different views. This is of course quite normal and maybe opening this thread might be very silly as things might have been said thousands of times already here. However, as a newbie on this forum I did not find real impressions especially on the HifiMan SUSVARA, especially when compared to STAX. And in addition to the headphones themselves, there is this multiple-headphone amplifier discu…

  11. Started by CarlSeibert,

I just contacted the Stax distributor about replacement foam for the earpad side of my Lambda Pros. The response was that now they offer either foam or cloth, and that each is integral to the earpad. $35 and $55, respectively. That raises a couple questions. Foam or cloth? Cloth would seem more practical. Has anybody tried the cloth? Is there a sonic difference? For that matter, what's the difference between foam and nothing at all? The earpds on my headphones seem fine. I guess one could make the argument that they could be replaced based on age alone. What should I make of the bundling of the pads and foam/cloth? Is there any performance or design difference betwe…

The aim of the thread is to consolidate all the info that is out there of old and frankly strange electrostatic headphones we come across. I really should have started one of these back in 2005 when I started my collecting but hindsight and all that... So I'll start off with one so rare that there is pretty much no info out there for this set. Here is what it looked like when I got it: These were made by Audiotec in France and aside from some brochures back in the say we know nothing about them. There isn't even a model number on them or a left-right identifier. They are quite big, roughtly the same size as the SR-Omega and the back of the fork is pretty m…

  13. Hello Head-Case, It has been a long time since I've been active here but, I'm glad to be back for something special for us E-Stat enthusiasts! We are very happy to finally announce our new Headphone – INOX. For the very first time in Headphone history, a Consumer/Production Closed-Back Electrostatic Headphone. There is a lot to uncover and I will try my best to give a brief introduction about the technical aspects and details of this new Headphone. Over time in this Official Thread, I would love to go over the stories and details of the many aspects that have gone behind this development which is impossible to cover in this single post. But, for now - …

  14. http://www.head-fi.org/forums/2261243-post1.html edit: scroll down to where it says "Part II" for the new part/comparison review a year and a half in the making. I think it is a great read, and everyone should take the time to look over it. Thanks Zanth for a superb write up, if you are every back around here.

Guys, I'm back again and this time please don't slam me Where I live I cannot audition any electro system since no one I know have one. But the idea of this have been intriguing me and I come to an agreement with Woo for a GES for delivery in Christmas this year. Jack is just waiting for my green light. Now, I need advise from you guys (and mind you, I don't have any experience at all with electro outside from what I read), should I get the Koss EP950 or SR404 ? Or maybe any other choices for the phones ? Wanted an Omega but too dear for my taste. I would like to build a system that is pretty much near the top end so I wouldn't worry too much in upgrading. And this…

  16. Seems we always start a thread about some new headphone out there that doesn't fit into the usual Sennheiser, Stax, Grado, AKG, etc etc etc family. Why not keep it all in one place as these threads seem to not go beyond a few pages anyway? Just a thought (might be a dumbass thought, who knows). Anyway, I wanted to start off with this: http://www.geeky-gadgets.com/mozaex-bluwaves-7-1-hd-headphones-are-crazy-expensive-2012-08-1/

  17. Started by JimP,

OK my previous thread rambling about HD650/580 was in essence about burning out a bit and cynicism creeping in with respect to this hobby (ie, is it worth it...). I snagged a K1000 finally after a long period of hesitation -- and while I've only had it days and and running from an old Bryston integrated amp -- it's like a shot of newfound entusiasm for headphones (or new 'fro-age O0 ). This is my last significant acquisition, I have no money now. The Bryston will have to do for awhile in terms of amp. Will be playing with my current portfolio longterm to see what stays/what goes. I know many of you have already been there, but this K1000 has fired me up again. My current…

  18. I'm absolutely interested in this thing. Comments? Predictions? Impressions? Guesses? Some people think it looks comical; I think it looks like one of the best looking headphones ever created. I seriously want one.

I know this was probably endlessly hashed out on HF back in the day, but I'm late to the HP1000 party and most of what I have been able to unearth over there is just the usual clueless blithering. So I ask you fine gents: Is there generally held to be a significant difference in sound quality between the HP1s and HP2s? I really, really dig the HP1s I got from Jim and I'm thinking thoughts. You know the ones.

  20. Hey guys, I'm new here... and I know you guys dont typically like Ultrasones so please dont shoot me So I've been thinking about getting a full sized pair of headphones for use at home again, and have been tempted by the Ultrasone Pro 900. For some reason, people seem to like em over at HF, but I wanted a second (more trustworthy) opinion. I've read these have a lot of bass, and U-shaped FR. This seems like a good thing to me because I tend to listen a very, very low volumes, and I am somewhat of a basshead. The price for these arent that bad either since they can easily be found new at $200 less than MRSP, and used at around 300 or so. But I'm still unsure wit…

  21. Started by TheSloth,

I bought a pair of physically very good condition K340's from head-fi a while back, and found that the left driver was not working properly - the electrostatic element wasn't doing anything. I contacted AKG who informed me that they can repair the K340, and charge a flat fee of $80 for any electrical work. So, I sent off my cans and today, true to their word, they called me to inform me that the would completely replace both drivers for the said flat fee if I wanted to go ahead, and would return them tomorrow FedEx Express! I'm very excited! Any suggestions for a K340 noob?

Well...these arrived this week via the Gilmore express and to make it easier for anybody looking for info on them, a new thread it is. As Kevin documented before, the amplifier is a dinky little thing and a direct clone of the Stax SRM-001. The amp is pretty much useless though as it doesn't have any volume control and you can't use it from a portable device as it needs a full 2Vrms input signal to reach usable volume levels. Here is a picture of the entire system plus what Kevin Posted: Opamp feeding a quad of fet's and into the output transistors. All AC coupled... Yet again another clone of older Stax stuff but onto the headphone…

  25. Started by catscratch,

Well, I've had my first exposure to HD650s using push-pull amplification. I have to say, I'm stunned. I *hate* these headphones single ended, for reasons which I will list here. Their bass is loose and overwhelming; there is a very slight grain to their sound, which is more of a characteristic of most dynamic headphones in general to my ears (but not all); the highs are muffled and obscure the detail; the impulse response is slower than a Geo Metro; the tone is far too warm and there seems to be bass even where there shouldn't be. And I have no idea why Sennheiser decided to voice the HD650 this way - rather I can guess (more bass when underdriven), but I have no idea…
