  1. Started by deniall,

I have searched through every thread and all I can seem to find is people bagging certain cables but no real info on why they are bagging them or what to look for in a cable. So where's the good shit? The info I was told I could find on this forum?

Since this was mentioned recently in another thread, I thought I'd post this sale I just came across. Seems a good deal for those looking for storage. Thermaltake BlacX USB Docking Station - dealmac.com

Trying to get three sources (one optical only, two either opt or coax) into 1-2 opt/coax jacks (one of each). Been looking for TOSLINK switcher options including some cheapies like this, but then came across this. Admit having the coaxial option would be a plus too. Besides Googling, pretty unaware of the options. Don't care about the bling, just want 1s and 0s passed. And if the switcher would affect support (can't imagine it would if passive, but if active?), 88.2/96 is desired. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Anyone had good luck with anything? On a related note, that optical only source, a MacBook, may be used with a JHAudio 3a coming, so if I want to go 24-b…

I recently became interested in transformer-based volume controls and want to learn about them. For example, what makes them different from regular passive pre-amps? And are there advantages to using one versus the other? For something concrete, I'm looking at ones offered by Promethus Audio for the sub-1k range, and the Sonic Euphoria models for sub-2k models.

Going to meets and packing up all my gear is a pain. And now with CanJam, it may limit what I bring. I was thinking of getting a Pelican case or two. Does anyone use them. Any other case suggestions? I don't want to use suitcases and cardboard boxes anymore.

  8. Golden Monkey on that other site (hidden in a 740C thread) mentioned the Tributaries - Silver Series video cable (could also be used for coaxial audio) sale over at AudioAdvisor. Of course ridiculous at $340 retail, but three coaxial cables at $30 isn't bad. Thought some here may be interested.

I don't know about you guys, but the VI cable keeps breaking for me (every few months of daily usage). If this is the case for others, what have you done to prevent this? Has anyone tried an aftermarket cable? I really don't want to deal with this problem again (3 times so far). Any help would be appreciated!

I'm thinking about replacing my current TV and getting something bigger that will also be able to hold all my A/V components. Allowing me to just have one piece of furniture for everything instead of a tv stand and a seperate audio rack. Right now I've been looking at the Syngery 30 w/ center channel shelf. Any other suggestions? I'd like to keep it under $1k and no wider than 65" if possible.

  11. For you guys who might be interested, i got the results in from the lab today of the silver contents of the TWag V1 and V2 cables and have attached a picture of the results, some of you might have seen the green twag thread on head-fi but some V1 cables have been turning green which suggested it had a high copper content so i decided to get it tested which seemed to be a mistake as i've had all sorts of accsations thrown at me since by Lee at Cryo Parts saying i have some hidden agenda and so so but the results have come in today and he has now it seems agreed to replace everyones V1 cables even if they have not turned green so contact whiplash to get yours changed for a …

The loops of litz wire tweak. This is quite possibly the strangest tweak I've heard of, get loops of wire and attach them to the ground connections of CD players, amps, and speakers. Sure, whatever, someone is on drugs. Then a few weeks ago I had my CD player open to make sure all the mods I'd done were still holding up, and while I had it open I thought, "time to prove someone IS on drugs", so I made a couple wire loops and put them on the RCA output grounds. I can't believe this shit works. I have no idea why, but it does. I've since applied the tweak to my amp and it works there too. It's relatively small difference, but the effects are as claimed by the inventor.

Before its over with, I'll own a CDP with a digital input. My computer is on the opposite side of the room from my rig. Currently I have a long USB cable running from the computer to the back of the Aqvox. Whenver the Aqvox gets replaced, I'll need something to do the USB -> Toslink/Coaxial thing. The name I remember the most from researching this kind of thing a while back was the M-Audio Transit. Is there any other piece I should consider?

I'm a bit loathe to post this, but I have had some interesting and positive experiences. There's a lot of buzz around about various USB tweaks to extract better sound from PC or Mac audio. It was cheap enough that I decided to jump into the fray. I started with a Uptone Audio Regen, and immediately heard sonic benefits. So I looked for various other devices, and ended up with an iFi iUSB 3.0 (used at work with my Chord Mojo), iFi iPurifier 2, Audioquest Jitterbug, and just tonight a previously-unknown-to-me product called the Intona USB Isolator. A lot of marketing BS floats about, along with some science, pseudo- or not. Everything I have tried so far, tho…

As observant Head-Casers will note, I am a fan of I often end up taking 45 minutes or so during the process, and I like to listen to podcasts while doing so. My laptop sits on a shelf that's about 4' away from the sink where I shave. I have some really (really) crappy speakers right now that are USB powered and have a 1/8" audio cable. They have two modes "too quiet to hear" and "so distorted you can't make out speech." I'd like a USB powered speaker (singular or pair, it's irrelevant), ideally one that has a built in DAC so it's only connection to my laptop is via the USB cable. I've never particularly liked the analogue output on any Macintop that I've owned…

  18. So i probably need to pickup two more sets of balanced xlr cables and two digital coaxial cables. My gut says mono price, not sure if the price jump to blue jeans is worth it. Figured I would ask around here where people's go to place is for cables on the cheap.

Hello all, I'm considering to buy one of these cables to connect preamp to amp. Has anyone heard or tried any of these cables? I would be really grateful for any comment. Regards, Francisco

Just thought I'd post this link to the announcement that WE will once again produce more 300B's and perhaps some more tubes at a new facility in Georgia. If anything else, it should keep scalpers from driving up the prices of the ones on the market now. http://timesfreepress.com/news/2013/jun/23/western-electric-plugs-into-rossville/

  23. I have always been curious by what appears to be a wide variety and diversity in the various permutations of the above rectifier tube. They seem to come in all forms of mullards and rebranded mullards as well as philips, with fancy bases and logos and others that are more basic pedestrian looking, all seeming to garner outrageous prices and others being more modest. I have never even bothered to roll or even think about the concept of the rectifier having an impact on the sound signature, probably due to spite. Feel free to share your thoughts and experiences.

  24. I'm getting ready to buy some accessories for my incoming turntable, and while I have a list in mind, I would like some recommendation/suggestions since this is my first time entering the analog world. I know I need the following: 1) stylus force gauge: probably will get the Shure one, unless there is a compelling reason to get a digital one? 2) Spirit level 3) Record mat: I have no idea how to choose which one to get. 4) Brush: Again, there are a ton of options, and I don't know where to start. 5) Record sleeves 6) Test record 7) Cartridge alignment: there seems to be different alignment systems for different arms, so any information? So I recenty got a new iPhone 3g and now need to carry around my earbuds with the USB cord with me at all times. So right now my solution has been to use my old batty and dugout softcase:) So I have two questions. 1. What is the best soft headphones case that has enough space for earbuds, usb cable and maybe a future third cord? I would prefer a softcase but am bycurious over soft/hardcase. (The third cord option would be for an iPhone A/v cable but is totally optional I would like it as a future cord.) 2. What is the best earbuds with microphone, volume adjustment and play, pause, fast forward etc.?
