So my director asked me to like get something for his office for music/demos/whatever with a budget of ~500 in total. I would have some suggestions 2 channel or 2.1, but any more than that is kind of beyond my experience outside of computer speakers.. any recs?

Any thoughts on these speakers? http://www.parts-express.com/pe/pshowdetl.cfm?&Partnumber=301-980&scqty=1 I'm working my way through Don Keele's papers and the original NRL publications and the theory and results are quite interesting and unique IMO, and the kit while not cheap looks like a great bargain for what you are getting. Not to mention it removes the biggest obstacle I have with DIY speakers: cabinet making. I attached the manual (10 MB), which is not only incredibly comprehensive with respect to the building process but also has lots of measurement and design information. 301-980-audio-artistry-inc-cbt36k-manual.pdf

Hey guys, I've been away from HC for about 2 months (I miss you rascals ) due to some major home renovation and because I took up 12 weeks of industrial attachment as part of my Eng degree graduation requirement. Anyway, I wanted the get opinions from you guys about using solid cement/concrete blocks for speaker stands. You see, since my house is undergoing renovation anyway, there are a lot of bricks and cement just lying around. I figure I'd just ask the construction guys to make me a stand like the one below: The pic above is not mine; it

I have the occasional mono vinyl, and they invariably sound like crap on stereo headphones or speakers. You get a wonderful stereo image of all the noise crud on the record's surface, while the music is a lifeless dead-center image. There also may be some sort of smearing from two speakers (that can never be exactly the same) trying to reproduce the same signal. Not long ago I heard a local fellow's pure mono setup, the speaker was a gigantic 50's or 60's Bozak cabinet with multiple drivers. The sound was very surprising, and extremely enjoyable. I'm not sure if you need the same kind of speakers to capture most of the magic, but since then I've been looking at my unu…

So I recently bought some short speaker cable from BJC terminated with banana plugs. I figured I'd have no trouble using the banana plugs the B speaker terminals on my 840A since it was super easy hooking up my 22L's with banana plug terminated speaker wire. Lo and behold, I'm just here trying to setup my SRD-7/mk2, and the fucking plugs won't go into the terminal. A quick flick of the flash light reveals: what the fuck? why the hell would cambridge put little pieces of black plastic in JUST the b terminals so banana plugs can't be used there? I'm no expert on speaker amps, could somebody please tell me what the fucking point of this is so I can stop saying fu…

Looking to get a set of active studio monitors. Having a hard time deciding between a set of coaxial's such as Equator or PreSonus or ribbon's such as Emotiva or Adam. Both have their pros and cons, but there is no way for me to try all of them in my office. Budget is about $1,500.

I have a pair of Dared 300B quasi mono blocks that output 13 watts. They have 2 12AU7's as the input and Sophia Princess Mesh as the output. I am going to be using these as nearfield listening sessions in the bedroom when the wife is clanging pans in the kitchen and my son is being chased by cops with the constant sound of a siren in his room (not a good time to listen to my living room speaker setup which I am very happy with). I will be using an Exemplar Modded Oppo BDP-5 as the source. Anyone have experience with both, besides Tyll's setups at Canjam, and can offer some insight?

Bringing my pops back from the airport, and tomorrow is trash day. I'm driving down my street when I see some speakers, a large bunch of electronics rather, sitting on the side of the road. My house is like 8 houses down, so I decide to just go home grab the cargo van and drive back by and if they're even decent, I'll pick them up. So, what do I find? I'll let the crappy pics speak for themselves (GF has the camera, so I had to use my phone). They are: Marantz SP 2050 The Smaller Advent Loudspeaker Air Suspension Quadra Linear Horn System All the speakers are in MINT condition. Foam and everything is MINT. Hopefully the dew that was starting to build…

Hello all, for a long time I've been looking into speakers for the living room. The living room(it's a living room/dining room) is 14'x27'x8'(WxLxH), the sofa is placed 12ft from the wall. I've been looking at getting these; Magnepan MMG For Sale | AudiogoN I don't have any amplifiers so recommendations for one would be nice. I have been thinking about the Emotiva XPA-2. I'd be happy to hear any other recommendations, the budget for the speakers is of ~$1000, although I can stretch it a little bit but I would prefer not to so I can get the other components. Thanks.

Has anyone heard of/heard these? They seem to be getting glowing reviews and look pretty interesting overall - powered sub w/ ribbon tweeter setup. Also not that expensive, at $3k for a pair of the triton two's. http://www.goldenear.com/products/triton-towers

Finally bit the bullet and picked up a dream speaker of mine for a long time. I was able to unload my hornshoppe horns and while they were great for the price, the resolution and detail retrieval of the lowthers is in a completely different world. Lightning speed, incredibly dynamic, beautiful top end, wonderful imaging. I am also very happy with the bass response, in due to the alerion enclosure really maximizing the low end output, coupled with the Firstwatt F1, the combo is really well matched to each other.

It has been a long time that I have purchased a pair of bookshelf speakers (1981 and I purchased a pair of AR18. Now I find myself wanting a pair that could serve initially as near-field speakers while working at the computer station but later (18 months away) to fill an small room (12' by 15'). I ran across the Fitzspeakers while looking for information on used Omega speakers and two models interest me. These are the Jr Monitors (Fritz Jr Monitors Technical Specifications) and their Fostex 6 Full Range (8inchFullRangeSpecs). Initially they would be driven by a Red Wine Audio Signature 30.2 and I listen mostly (over 95%) to jazz. Has any of you listen to these spe…

I'm thinking of putting together a 2nd speaker rig (it might end up being an office rig). Either way I'd like to pair whatever speakers I get with an integrated tube amp preferably one that also has a decent headphone output. In terms of power needed anything 30W+ would be more than enough. I'd like to keep this under $1k if possible.

Powered speakers make a lot of sense to me, but they don't seem to be popular in Hi-Fi, so what's the deal? Are there some fundamental disadvantages to using powered speakers, or is it just custom and tradition?

I took another trip to the local audio store so I could drool over the Shanling T-200 & T-300 CD players in person, but the main purpose was to check out small floorstanders & largish bookshelf speakers. I wanted to see if there was anything that could match the Living Voice Avatar at a lower cost. The summary is unfortunately not, but I did find a couple nice surprises. Keep in mind that my standard for good sound for small floorstanders is the Living Voice Avatar OBX-R, which is the tweaked out version of the Avatar. Anyway, first speaker up was the Elac FS 207 Limited Edition. These are German speakers with some kind of ribbon midrange/tweeter thingy. Well…

Title pretty much says it all...aside from also wanting to be able to listen to the Frozen soundtrack for the billionth time. They will need to be bookshelf with a footprint no larger than 12" w x 14" d. I am open to suggestions... going back in time to prevent Frozen from ever happening would be most preferable. But, a decent alternative might be some Ascend Sierra 2's. Does Beats make speakers yet?

Anyone have any opinions on this vintage receiver as both a headphone amp and a speaker amp? Seems extremely popular even today and people say it mates well with some ESLs like Quads. Problem is it needs an assload of tubes and the p2p rat's nest wiring scares me.

I'm looking for advices of you again. I'm looking for stereo system components which reveals cables, records, even stands which they stands on. I want to call what I want characterless or boring to listen. I want this system for A/B testing. And of course I'm on a budget like 6000 Dollars. I'm going to look for second hand components. and XLR is must. The brands I've heard from people are; PMC (I'm going to listen some of them in saturday) and ATC for speakers, Bryston for amplifier, and I'm looking for a studio dac (I think mytek has best price/performance ratio) Do you have any ideas about any other brands? Any cheaper alternative to Bryston esp…
