I Can't Hear You, Speaker Man, I'm Listening to My Headphones

  1. Started by cetoole,

Does anyone know anything about these speakers? Since they are made by Final Sound, I presume they are inverted ESL, though this model has a 7" alloy woofer handling the low end with the 48" ESL panel for mids and up. There obviously are going to be some issues with reflections, and I bet they are very sensitive to the room, but still, pretty interesting looking. Seen a few good reviews, but from unknown sources.

My old ass Harmon Kardon AVR-85 is losing it's channels one at a time. The surround channels are all but dead. But all the Pre outs work. So, I was thinking of using it as a Pre amp until I replace it. And get a Multichannel amp to power the 5 speakers I have now. (NHT Super Zeroes). My Velodyne HGS10 sub is still working (knock on wood). I plan on getting the Smyth Research Realiser as well, so single ended amp recommendations only, please. Eventually I'd like to get a better Pre Amp/processor (maybe the Emotiva UMC-1), but as of now, I'd like to keep my speaker related purchases as small as possible. (Around $500 hopefully, maybe up to $800) While it w…

I currently have a yamaha M80 amp that I found on craigslist for 150 bucks but I've been getting the itch to upgrade. I have no experience with speakers and don't know what a decent budget amp for magnaplanar speakers would be. What would you recommend?

Pretty nice little package. 12"*12"*14", sealed 10" woofer, 50lbs, 1000W RMS, claimed 23Hz extension, $800. If I ever get a sub for the office rig, this will be near the top of my list. Only thing I can think of that would probably do more for less is the Epik Vanquish at $700, but that's quite a bit bigger and heavier.

  5. Started by Fitz,

I have a rather cramped situation that requires somewhat creative furniture placement, by using a single room as a bedroom, electronic workshop, and listening room. As it is now, things are fairly good and the speakers (Maggie 1.6) sound wonderful. However I want to build a new workbench that is significantly larger, and it would require getting rid of a set of shelves and making the room too cramped, or rearranging furniture to make better use of the middle of the room rather than everything against the wall. Moving the listening position near the middle (by setting the desk in the middle so I could listen from there) is a no go, because there is a massive bass null a…

I admit it -- though primarily a headphone guy I enjoy drooling over pictures of beautiful speakers. For the artistry, for the engineering, for the lulz. I would enjoy seeing particularly striking examples you may happen to come across. These really struck me today. New Vienna Acoustics Klimt series. Concentric midrange/tweeter units adjustable for tilt and toe-in. Murata supertweeters. Eton spider-cone woofers. 22Hz - 100kHz. The black one makes me think of Barad-d

I was looking at building a pair of speakers and was thinking about doing something a bit wacky... has anyone heard the planars they sell on parts express? those Bohlender Graebener ones... either the smaller ones or the insanely large ones? ex. Parts-Express.com - Search Results i found a few projects online using the smaller Neo-8 in both single and line-array configurations... and then all sorts of insane projects using the RD75 75" planar driver with line arrays of larger drivers next to them etc... anyone ever actually listen to any of these things? lol thanks

So my director asked me to like get something for his office for music/demos/whatever with a budget of ~500 in total. I would have some suggestions 2 channel or 2.1, but any more than that is kind of beyond my experience outside of computer speakers.. any recs?

Hi everyone. One of my tweeters for my 400i PSB speakers is blown out. I was wondering where a good place would be to try and find a replacement tweeter. I honestly never did try and find a replacement tweeter before so this is new territory for me. I sent an email to PSB in hopes of purchasing one from them if they have one, which seems unlikely after doing some research on the net. I put a WTB ad in audiokarma as well. It seems that a website called Madisound Speaker Components | Assisting speaker builders for more than 25 years. used to sell the replacement, but they don't offer it anymore. I will try and call my local authorized PSB dealer to see if they do…

Here's what I've been selling off my high-end headphone gear for. Just moved them in an hour ago. Unfortunately I'll have to wait a bit to give them a listen, as I've got some work to catch up on! Also, mine is the only residence in a block of businesses, so I need to wait until evening to crank things up Uses a 10" dual-concentric driver with all the specs of the TOP end of the Prestige line. That means Alnico (Alcomax) magnets, twin-roll impregnated fabric surrounds, doped paper pulp bass drivers, 2" round-wire wound voice coils, and the special Pepper-Pot tweeter waveguide instead of the Tulip waveguide used on the lower lines. There are separate magnetic motors fo…

My McCormack needs some work so I expect to be without it for as long as a month. I was thinking about picking up one of these for $299: Emotiva Audio UPA-2 Two Channel Power Amplifier Anyone have any experience with this model. I know there was a thread discussing another model. I figure, CJ will buy it from me when I'm done as I'm sure he will not have an amp in the next month.

i can get a pair for $200 shipped. just wondering if anyone knew of any places that sold them for cheaper. thanks.

  17. I created a similar thread at Headfi a while ago and I'll paste the links I was offered over there. I'm now much more serious and once again interested in any good reading for room setup and treatments. I'm especially interested in room design and getting the most performance if one is able to start from complete scratch. I think I'm growing out of my Quad 12L Actives. Lately, as my tastes moves further into jazz, I find that they are fatiguing in the highs and are lacking in bass and bass extension. I'm looking for speakers <$800 that will be easily upgradable in the future. I'm thinking either floorstanders or monitors+sub combo and I'm willing to go used. Unfortunately, I'm a grad student so I won't be in a room with larger than 12'x12' anytime soon so factor that in. I'm leaning toward passives since I will have more choices in the future to upgrade. The price does not include an amp. What do you guys think?

Hi, I've been looking for some speakers for a while. And these popped out. However, my main 2 concerns are: 1. Lifespan. Apparently from what I've read, these speakers don't last long, with the delamination and whatsoever other issues. Frankly I don't know anything about them, but I was just concerned after reading through all the searches that popped out regarding issues with old planars. So how bad is it really? As in, does it really spoil so easily, and require high maintainance? And if so, is it easily repairable? 2. Performance. Now I know this is touchy, but while I've seen some great raving reviews about them, apparently there are some serious hater…

  20. Started by Knuckledragger,

I got back one of my C-22 preamps and my MC-75 monoblock from the repair shop yesterday. I've had these things for a decade, and I'm just now getting around to dealing with them properly. I haven't plugged the MC-75 into anything but the AC outlet so far, but I did just spend half an hour futzing around taking pictures of it: The case could use a good cleaning, but I'm not sure what cleaning product one uses on vintage tube amps. The repair tech tested all the tubes and said they did quite well. I understand the power tubes used the MC-75 are quite spendy to replace. I don't have any pitures of the C-22 preamp yet. I'm going to try to integrate it as a phon…

Yeah! I just scored this Omega Super 8 Alnico (formerly SuperHemp, but with new drivers), which is on its way to me (seller's photo). Will be driving with my Almarro A205AmkII and various sources. Have had good experience with Omega Super 5, so I splurged.

Found some positive reviews of Emotiva bang-for-buck, but they've been a bit short on details. Anyone here have experience with the RPA2, XPA2 or any other Emotiva offerings? Not sure what speakers I'll finally mate with these, but at least initially it was be some CSW M80s. Likely use the Extreme Platinum as a preamp. Any guidance much appreciated. Any of you guys heard the Ascend Acoustics? I love small two ways like the 170SE. But I really like the Ascend 340SE ... MTM + high efficiency = big soundstage, big dynamics. The 340 is a lot like my old JM Labs I liked so well. Plus, I usually like soft dome tweeters > metal dome tweeters. Any input will be greatly appreciated ....
