I Can't Hear You, Speaker Man, I'm Listening to My Headphones

  1. Started by dsavitsk,

I am in the market for a set of speakers. I have very quickly become overwhelmed and could use suggestions. The room these will go in is ~14' x 31' with 9 foot ceilings. It is open to a room that is 14' x 20', so effectively the room is 14' x 51'. For various reasons, they probably need to be placed along the short wall, That wall has windows over most of it, and a large radiator under the window. This means that the speakers cannot be closer than about 18" to the wall. Additionally, the corners are not accessible, so corner horns won't work. I plan on driving these with a push-pull 300B tube amp (~30W Class A). These amps can drive about anything (they are not SE…

  2. I started this on head-fi as well but I thought for the poor suckers that aren't allowed to post on headfi anymore or simply just don't wanna I post it here also So, as title states I'm looking for a replacable amp for the Akai AM-69. The problem is it's broke as it provides the music with A LOT of noise and cracking. Very unpleasant to say the least. We once had it fixed and it worked for a while but it came back again, driving me nuts. Here's the catch: It has 2 coax inputs and 2 optical inputs. 7 line-ins and 3 line-outs. 180watt with 4 ohm and 100 watt with 8 ohm. The rest of the specs I do not have on me now, so if anyone needs to no more, let me know and…

I'm looking for 1. Reasonably full range, extend down to 46hz or more 2. Easy to drive: 88+ dB/w, preferably 8ohm 3. Not too big, (Harbeth Compact 7 is about the biggest I can use) 4. Front ported or sealed 5. Cost less than 3000 for a used one in good condition Musical preference: classical and Wagner. Listening at relatively low levels (in an apartment). Therefore, vocals and ability to come alive at low volume are important. Speakers will be used on desktop, about 2 feet away from where I sit. I'm considering Merlin TSM and Harbeth Compact 7. They seem like good choices, but I'd like to hear more suggestions.

  5. Started by Nenso,

Ok, I'm currently looking at the Audioengine A5s since they're like a combo amp. I don't have a good place to put these speakers so I think I should start small, and get speaker/integrated amps etc after I'm done with these. The main problem is my room(s) don't have a good place for the speakers but that should be fine for now. Reks reccomended the A5s I think so I looked into it. Any ideas? Like should I go for it? or anything else you guys reccomend? I'm trying to stay away from hi-fi speaker systems atm. so anything combo should be good. Budget is maybe.. $300-600, really depends what it is that I'm getting. I need to patch up my headphone rig first anyways..

Just plugged it in today. Wow, fantastic bass, in fact too much, had to pull out my horns from the corners a bit. May need to play around with stuffing or even loading the outputs with some resistance to get some extra dampening. Crystal clear, focused sound, beautiful soundstage and great tone. Nelson Pass knows his stuff. Currently being driven by the headphone output of my moth with EML 45 tubes using a 1/4 inch to RCA adapter with monster cables, lol. I can't wait to get my real headphone/preamp when it's done. Pictures probably tomorrow or the weekend.

Sold off my ol' Paradigm MilleniaOneCT systems and Maggie .7's for some nice fat 20.7's and the mini maggies on my desktop. Driving the kit with ... MacBook Pro -> McIntosh D100 -> MC252 -> 20.7 +-> PrimaLuna ProLogue Integrated -> mini maggies Sounds amazing! Thinking of upgrading my WA7/tp for their DiaLogue as a dedicated HP amp.

Jonathan Valin: "Oh, and I’ve saved the best for last. Not only are the 30.7s the handsomest-looking large Maggies of all time (in their blue trim and snow-white panel covers), they are also among the best deals Maggie has ever offered. They cost $29,000 the pair (release slated for January). That’s not chump change, I grant you, but compared to the price of the six-figure speakers they so successfully compete against, it makes them, perhaps, the greatest bargain in ultra-high-end history. 10. Started by Hopstretch,

Pretty nice little package. 12"*12"*14", sealed 10" woofer, 50lbs, 1000W RMS, claimed 23Hz extension, $800. If I ever get a sub for the office rig, this will be near the top of my list. Only thing I can think of that would probably do more for less is the Epik Vanquish at $700, but that's quite a bit bigger and heavier.

I'm in the market for a new power amp, preferrably something with 300+ Watts into 4ohm. I've been considering picking up a used Rotel RB-1090 it would certainly fit the bill powerwise. But I keep seeing all the various "Class D" type amps and their size and weight make them intruiging options. Out of the Class D amps the ones that caught my interest the most are ones based on the ICE Power modules (think the new belcanto amps) and the Hypex UCD Modules (think CIAudio amps). Any thoughts/suggestions would be appreciated.

I'm currently using a PrimaLuna Prologue One to drive a pair of Green Mountain Audio Europa's. I've actually been using that setup more than my headphone rig as of late so I figure its time I put some more money into it. I plan to upgrade both the speakers and the amp but I'd like to do the speaker upgrade first. Here's a few links to speakers I'm currently considering: GMA Callisto - http://greenmountainaudio.com/Speakers/Callisto/Welcome.htm Seas Odin MK3 - http://www.madisound.com/odinmk3.html Selah Audio SA-1 - http://www.selahaudio.com/id46.html Thoughts on those or any other suggestions are welcome . Oh any recommendations need to be bookshelf/stand mount sp…

  13. Started by JMcMasterJ,

Hello, I'm thinking about getting a new pair of speakers. I'm currently using a pair of Von Schweiker VR-1 monitors, but I'm moving into a larger space soon and am interested in getting some full size speakers.I'm currently using an April Music Aura Note, which is an excellent source and amp, but is just 50wpc. The room I'll be using them in is 15 x 14. I'd like to spend around $1000 or less, but that may be flexible. I don't have much experience with speakers as I've been a headphone guy in college. Any recommendations? Thanks

  15. Started by laxx,

So I have a thread going about what speakers I bought. They sound pretty good, but could be better (room conditions, other gear in use). 2009 is going to start off with more audio gear, but I'm not sure where to start. I'll start this by listing the gear I'm currently using. MHDT Constantine+ (coax) -> Onkyo Integrated (pre-out) -> JVC Laboratory M-7050 Power Amp -> AV123 X-Statiks Cabling is just solid core silver from DAC to pre, starquad from pre to power. Zu Julian from power to speakers. I'd like to replace the pre and power, but don't know which to start with. I'm thinking pre as the JVC power amp isn't supposed to be a bad amp at all. If I …

  16. Started by skullguise,

Hey all, AV123.COM is clearing out their "ELT" line of speakers, for some pretty cheap prices with free delivery. This line looks nice, with some nice finishes. I owned the monitors (little softer/warmer sounding), still own the towers (REAL nice deal at this price), and the center channel (have it, but haven't set it up yet; have read it's so-so). But the towers at $249 Cherry/$259 Rosewood (though these may be out of stock now) delivered are a great deal IMO. Only caveat: AV123 was founded by Mark Schifter, and he is currently in legal trouble, and it may affect/reflect on the company. They are still developing and getting new product, but there may be some …

  17. I'm looking for advices of you again. I'm looking for stereo system components which reveals cables, records, even stands which they stands on. I want to call what I want characterless or boring to listen. I want this system for A/B testing. And of course I'm on a budget like 6000 Dollars. I'm going to look for second hand components. and XLR is must. The brands I've heard from people are; PMC (I'm going to listen some of them in saturday) and ATC for speakers, Bryston for amplifier, and I'm looking for a studio dac (I think mytek has best price/performance ratio) Do you have any ideas about any other brands? Any cheaper alternative to Bryston esp…

  18. As I've mentioned in another post, I'm trying to assemble an inexpensive computer rig for a friend. I know it's unlikely anyone has heard all the components, but anyone got any very positive or exclusionary experience with: NuForce Icon & NuForce S-1 vintage DAC (likely Sonic Frontiers TransDAC/Assemblage DAC1) & Audioengine A2s So USB DAC/amp & speakers versus DAC & active monitors. Leaning towards the latter (already have the DAC which would connect optically to his iMac), but both setups would in the end be ~$500. Unfortunately, buying both and returning the items of one set isn't possible in this case. Any words of advice?

  19. Started by grenert,

There seem to be quite a few speaker folk here, so I'm hoping you can help me out. I'm setting up an office system (pretty big office, but I don't listen very loud) and I would like to hear any suggestions you have. In another office I have some older Paradigm Atoms (I think V3) and a powered Paradigm subwoofer. It's nice, but I think it lacks a little treble and spaciousness. I don't want to get another subwoofer, so I'm looking for a set of monitors only. The bass response is less important to me than the treble and dispersion of sound. Something that doesn't require speaker stands would be preferable. The rest of the system is not definite yet, but I think I'll go w…

  21. Started by postjack,

Tyrion posting his Compact Hemps for sale got me interested yesterday, so I did a bit of internet searchage. I like the looks of the Omega company, and their speakers look very nice, and reasonably priced to boot. I'm a newb when it comes to high efficiency speakers and SET amps (its high efficiency right, not low efficiency?), but I admit the simplicity of it all appeals to me (single ended triode -> single driver). So what do Omegas sound like? Do they like bigger rooms or smaller rooms?

Yeah! I just scored this Omega Super 8 Alnico (formerly SuperHemp, but with new drivers), which is on its way to me (seller's photo). Will be driving with my Almarro A205AmkII and various sources. Have had good experience with Omega Super 5, so I splurged.

  23. I want to get a modest stereo setup going in my listening room, as well as a couch instead of just an office chair, so that more then one person can enjoy music. Someone over at sh.tv recommended I check out Orb Audio. I'm looking at their Classic Two Stereo Speaker System, and possibly a Sonic Impact T-Amp to drive them. Their tiny footprint is ideal, because the listening area is small, and these would fit well on the front corners of my desk. Has anyone ever heard these speakers?
