  3. The English are feeling the pinch in relation to recent terrorist threats and have therefore raised their security level from “Miffed” to “Peeved.” Soon, though, security levels may be raised yet again to “Irritated” or even “A Bit Cross." The English have not been “A Bit Cross” since the blitz in 1940 when tea supplies nearly ran out. Terrorists have been re-categorized from “Tiresome” to “A Bloody Nuisance.” The last time the British issued a “Bloody Nuisance” warning level was in 1588, when threatened by the Spanish Armada. The Scots have raised their threat level from “Pissed Off” to “Let’s Get the Bastards.” They don’t have any other levels. This is the reason they have been used on the front line of the British army for the last 300 years.

  9. Welcome @Cattler! Welcome to head-case. Hope everything is chill with you. Do you meditate regularly? I think its pretty cool to do so. I look forward to it now. For a fun and easy tex-mex meal, cut up some chicken breast into cubes and saute in the pan with salt and pepper. They'll cook quick. Then cut up an avocado or two, add salsa and tortilla chips of your choice and VOILA, you have a tasty and reasonably healthy dinner. Works great for leftovers except for avocados which turn into a goddamn horror show 20 minutes after you cut them open. What is the deal with that? @Cattler lets get to work on an avocado that stays good for longer. Thanks for your time.

  12. I would not want to have to run my 13" MacBook Pro with Touchbar with less than the 16Gb of RAM it has. YMMV but unless there is serious financial constraints it just does not make sense to me. According to Apple, no. According to me, in my usage I have been unaware of any real usage difference, but my usage is mainly flash drives. I do plug my docking station(s) into a left side port.

  14. Unless you think your going to need the absolute best unplugged run time I would definitely go with max ram because you cannot upgrade it later. I would probably go middle I5 because for most programs the I7 does not bring any huge advantage. But it also does not bring a huge disadvantage. The only time I felt I had too much laptop was when it weighed too much.

  15. Good Morning Head Case! Figured I'd tap into the collective experience of all you fine people to see if anyone has any thoughts on this. Melody and I are considering selling our 2 bedroom/1 bathroom 1200 sq. ft. house and purchasing a 2 bedroom/2.5 bathroom 2500 sq. ft. townhouse. Here are the facts: -My parents are currently living in this townhouse, and are looking to move, so I'd be buying it from them. I have no idea how much they'd sell it for, we haven't gotten that far, but I know we'd be able to get it for well under market, which is really why we are even considering it. Added bonus is buying from my Dad will be easy. -It's in a great part of Mobile, arguably the best. We could not afford a home in this area under normal circumstances. Super safe, lots of sidewalks, walkable/bikable to many places. It's close to grocery stores, rec centers, parks, all the stuff we care about. -Plenty of room for us, and we don't anticipate having any kids. -I've crunched the numbers on the monthly HOA fee, and it's reasonable. I think the expenses it covers makes it worth it, although I know the fee will likely increase in the future. -Not having to keep up a yard or the home's exterior is a big plus. -The most obvious downside is we have a massively powerful home theater with a subwoofer that shakes the whole goddamn house. We love it and I know if we are in a townhouse listening at high volumes/high bass can no longer happen. Anyway I'm just wondering if anyone has any experience living in a townhouse? Good points/bad points? Thanks.

  16. Managed to make it 6 miles into my first ride on the new wheel/tires this morning before having a lovely pinch flat and finding the seat bag I swapped from the Litespeed had everything but the tube I needed to fix the problem. I love walking in cleats.

  17. I'm about to irritate everyone by waxing lyrical about "Ye", as in the title of this thread. This goes back to pre-Caxton times, when there was a letter called thorn, written Þ . This had the sound value "th". So "the" would have been written Þe . Now Caxton, back in the 1400's standardised his printing press on the latin alphabet, and so had no way of writing the thorn. So he picked Y as being the equivalent of Þ . So "Ye" is actually just pronounced "the". The thorn, as Birgir will immediately point out, is still a valid letter and sound in Icelandic.

  19. Heck, while you are at it, check out the new iPad Pro as well! I am soooooooo happy with it. Apple has just been killing it on the hardware front lately. Yeah, their prices are high, but damn do they deliver quality hardware.

  21. I tend to go for the most power and capacity that I can afford, in an attempt to future proof, but that's more of a Windows mentality, because Windows software has a tendency to act like a liquid -- take up the form of its container. Apple software tends to have much better longevity (from everything I've heard), so I think you just answered your own question -- i7 and 8G, for battery life and lack of overkill. (i5 don't really take that much less power, they're just i7's that failed quality control.) And who knows, if you get garageband, you may want the extra power.

  25. A little change on the new iPad that I appreciate: they've moved the logic board on the smaller iPad Pro from the right side of the device to the center. The area surrounding the logic board gets quite warm under load, so its really nice that its moved from where you'd place your hands to a spot on the iPad that you don't touch as often. Hard to know whether this was done on purpose or if its just a serindipitous coincidence, but it is a welcome change. Before (9.7" model): After (10.5" model):

  26. Thanks! A work in progress. A few questions first to start the troubleshooting on your GG. I'm only an ape with a DVM so will outline a methodology. What are your basic power on measurements: HV+/HV-, LV+/LV-, heaters? All LEDs on? Have you set your adjustments? What do they measureme: CCS/balance/offset? Where in the circuit is your amp going crazy when signal is applied? Help us understand what is "crazy". On one amp board or both PCBs? If one channel is good, use that as a standard to look for differences in the other. On one half of one LSK389 or both transistors on package? Is the symptom only at the headphone output? What are the LSK389 b,c,e voltages? Your issue might not be with the NFB. My amp's balance was so skewed that I was burning the same 50k resistor as Whitigir. Needless to say the same symptom had a different cause in my amp. The above info will be a good start at opening communication for help with evaluating your GG problem. Should not be too hard to localize and correct. I bought all my case parts/metal work complete from Head-Case member joehpj. Really nice design and product, and a great guy to deal with. Here's a photo after first receiving and trial fitting the all case parts. Listened to YouTube videos (MP3 audio with digital volume control) over iPhone on the GG with SR-207 last night. That combo was ridiculously great sounding. More headspace, bass slam and pitch, treble, detail, ambience, and just sounding quite a bit more natural than my Yggy>KGST> SR-009. Probably, the SR-009 on the GG really needs the refinement of the Yggy as source to really shine.

  30. Turning an old capacitive terminal keyboard from 1978 into a modern USB keyboard with fully programmable keys. Got it working fine, but had to tear it back down for keycap polishing and a few minor tweaks. Currently reapplying dielectric lube to all the key stems. Need to finish up this project so I get back to testing Circlotron stuff.
