  1. It's been a while since I built something just for me but here is something old... So long story short, I was sent some boxes by mistake and the seller said I could just keep them. That also meant I had to find a project to put them. They were tiny 70mm tall boxes with sinks on the sides so an idea was born. It's been roughly 15 years since I built my first KGSS so why not make something to commemorate that..introducing the KGSS Klassik. So this was a pretty difficult birth, cramming the PCB's down to this size while using the same parts I used back in the day...was a challenge to the say the least and well, there is no space in the fucking chassis. So this is a bone stock KGSS like we did back in the day but with a few modern twists. Output resistors, 2SC4686A's instead of the C3675's but that's about it. The PSU is the new SMD version of the old KGSS design. As can be seen, this is a super tight fit and makes something like the KGSSHV mini seem spacious. It does work wonderfully but I need to do something about the Stax socket. So this one comes from the whole host of extension cables I've killed recently and often the threads on those sockets are just toast. So here I glued it in place with some crazy resin glue but it didn't set properly. Other than that, it is a cracking amp and not "that" much bigger than the SRM-252...

  2. No, neither servo engaged. Just got lucky with initial setting. I played with the offset trim and was able to go up to around 25V and then easily down to 0 with a bit of drift. BTW, I did not populate the IC for the opto, just the OP27. Is the OP27 Servo 1 as labeled on the board? And is this the one that does not require the 10V to trigger, so I can just adjust to close to 0 and let it do its work? EDIT: I just finished dialing in balance and offset. Turns out the offset was not as good as I though initially. The balance was WAY off, at 75V. It appears that balance impacts offset, because after getting balance to 0, the offset was then off about 20V, but easily got that down to 0 also. On both boards, I am able to get balance to < 100mV with a bit of drift over time, and offset to < 500mV, again with minor drift over time. Both servos turned off (header not connected). I am now going to re-check the 17ma setting for the 4 outputs and let it run for about an hour. Then, depending on the thermal state, I will move up to 20ma and redial all the settings. One thing I will say is the amps put out a LOT of heat!! Really surprised by how much. Massive heat sink got warm all over after just 10-15 minutes of testing. EDIT2: I put the jumper on Servo1, and it works quite nicely!! The offset varies +/- 200mV around 0, but holds that range pretty well so far! Does the servo also help with balance? I did not think it did, but for some reason balance is also staying much more stable, going up and down within 200mV of 0. I think I am ready to listen to music. Finger crossed. EDIT3: We have music!!! And it sounds really, really, really great! First impression compared to the SRX-Plus is more clarity to the bass (sharper, punchier) and more clarity in the treble. I jumped a couple times hearing some high treble parts I had not really noticed before in a few songs. Everything just sounds sharper and more technical, if that makes any sense. I need to listen more, but there appears to be more sound stage as well. I am using SR-507s. I can't wipe this smile off my face.

  11. Well, I decided since nothing was smoking or popping, I would give it 100% power. And sure enough, the offset quickly settled down to about 3V initially, and slowly went to about 0.4V after about 10 minutes. Great relief that everything appears to be working correctly, at least on the Left amp board. Now on to testing the other one and getting everything dialed in. Maybe tomorrow there will be music!!! EDIT: mwl168, you posted just as I was posting. I did not try that but should have. In any case, it is alive!!!!!! And if anyone noticed, I have a very strange looking header for B+/- rails on the amps. It is from Digikey. This item is nice because it allows the wires to be more up rather than across the board. But the real advantage is the way it lifts up off the board where the troublesome tracer is that a couple of people have gotten arcing from. See below how it looks. At least it allows me to see how much solder/flux there is under there.

  13. So I've been looking at a bunch of tube/solid state hybrid dynamic amp schematics, and every one of them is some form of bad, or really bad. (one person/ex company in particular) Low voltage plate, capacitve coupling of a high impedance source into a low impedance, poor balance etc. There had to be a better way. true balanced input. dc coupling. low impedance output. no feedback. proper use of a tube (pure transconducance) etc so I came up with this, work in progress. 4 x 3 inches ubaltobaltubeschem.PDF

  21. Many congratulations, Blueman2. I’ve learned so much from your posts and from the replies from the other members. I built a KGSSHV with lots of advice from members on another thread in this forum, and I’m about to put iron to boards today on my Carbon build. Hopefully, your good vibes will rub off on my build. ) -Vinh Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  22. The problem with mounting the 10m90s for CCS 580v bias is that there is a lot of voltage on that metal tab I have not measured it but it has to be well over 600v the heatsink is 6/32 mount hole most times the transistor hole is too small for any PPS washer I have to fit they will crack if you force it and the PPS washers require a M3 or 4/40, so no 6/32 screw good news is there is not a lot of heat here as its putting out ~1.5ma so I have used a nylon 6/32 with 2mm oxide pad and thermal grease Peek would be better have also reamed out transistor hole before mounting to fit washers and 4/40 SS screw with nut through heat sink hole this is all covered in one of the older threads but they are large 600v when let loose is exciting and yes I have had flaming boards this is what I get away with YMMV

  23. Yes, you want to use the one in the BOM. The idea is that the tube of the washer needs to go through the transistor tab and extends into the insulator below so the metal screw does not cause a short. Congo 5 just saved you from a disaster that was waiting to happen

  24. In the Blueman2 picture above it looks to me like a metal screw in the 10m90 for the headphone bias CCS And if so, do they make PPS washers that are white? It looks good but for that one concern thanks

  27. The silver XLR would also be a nice option and require significantly less work. To rear mount the socket, given how thick the panel is, you'd have to recess the body of the socket into the panel which is no trivial exercise - unless you're Kerry and have a cnc router in your closet.

  28. Got the XLR socket in. Here is the finished amp. The volume pot is cosmetic only - not wired.

But California still gets 99.6 % of me. Started out at 6:15 am, and made it about 800 miles to Las Cruces, NM. Bye bye Texas, smell ya later! Hope you made good time today too JP.

  38. Was at Newquay, Corwall (UK) to watch Bloodhound SSC doing its first public runs. Just using the Eurofighter Typhoon jet engine to propel the 5 ton vehicle to >200mph in 8 seconds. It was bloody awesome. In no uncertain terms it was bloody awesome. Next year, using the the jet engine and one rocket there will be a straightforward land speed record attempt of around 800mph, and in 2019 the full >1000mph once they have put in a cluster of three rockets. This is a long video, but the first section is well worth watching, as is Andy Green's commentary on his supersonic record 20 years ago. The first hour and a quarter is about yesterday, and then 2h to 2h15 is about the supersonic runs 20 years ago.

  40. I finally got the Spider legs for my ESL57's and after some boiled linseed oil and lacquer, they were installed yesterday: It has changed the sound quite a bit but it mostly makes them easier to live with such as cleaning underneath them and stuff like that. The panels are 49 years old at this point so the SQ is suspect but they play amazingly well for their age. Perfect balance with no noise or arcing at all. Next step will be to replace the panels, paint them and have the covers re-anodized black.
