I remember someone here having issues with the speed sensor for the Garmin 500. I have tried multiple ways to mount the sensor on the chain stay. No matter what I do the sensor on the spoke will hit the speed sensor. Anyone else have a similar problem. Right now I have it so that it will not hit but it only seems to work about half the time and when it does it is not accurate. Report
February 13, 201313 yr comment_560979 Take a picture of how you have it mounted. It took a couple of tries to get mine to work but eventually it worked just fine. Now, I can't get the cadence sensor to work because there's too much offset between the crank arm and the receiver but that's a different issue. Report

February 13, 201313 yr comment_561013 Just be aware that Superflys are notorious for cracking apart at the chainstays. Trek has allegedly fixed this issue for 2013, but they've been saying that since 2008 if not earlier. Trek will take care of you if the frame cracks apart, but that's something I'd rather not deal with in the first place. Report

If you like, I can see if there are any flippers in LA on bikeforums who might have a good used bike that has been gone thru properly. What kind of bike are you looking for? Road? more of a MTB or city bike? Drop bars or flat? If you wanted to buy new or near new, something like a Jamis Coda might be good to keep an eye out for. February 15, 201313 yr comment_561277 With today being the middle of the month I can actually say I may make my 100 mile goal for the month. I hit the 50 mile mark today and am happy about that. I'm going to try and get in a long, for me, ride in this weekend. Hoping to make at least 15 miles in one ride. I got the Garmin working right again. The spoke sensor had moved and was not lined up just right with the sense unit. My speeds look more acurate now. Still slow but I am getting faster even if it is only .5 mile at a time. The hills are not killing me as bad either now. I'm still slow going up but it is not as hard as i has been. Report

If you're looking at flat-bar/upright bikes then pretty much any decent hard tail MTB or city bike would be good directoin to go. The Jamis already mentioned seems nice. I would try to get to your LBS and at least sit on a few and see how they feel and get a good idea for sizing. If your not comfortable working on bikes I'd suggest just figuring (and including in your budget) on $50 to $100 for a good comprehensive tuneup if you end up purchasing a used ride. But really there's no reason not to buy used and hopefully get better value for your $$. Report
