Craig Sawyers 2,183 Report post Posted March 7, 2016 Here in tiny island Britain, this was a scary time. Very locally we had an airforce base called Greenham Common, where nuclear tipped cruise missiles were stored, as part of an agreement between Thatcher and Reagan. In the heat of the cold war (ie early 80s), launcher trucks with these on board were driven around the lanes locally to provide a moving target. All part of the Thatcher-Reagan era. There was a permanent Peace Camp there, staffed uniquely by women for decades. In US terms this is the equivalent of driving nuclear weapons around a thirty mile radius of, say Boston. If Boston was a few hundred miles from the USSR. Back in the real world, Greenham Common is a business incubator. But close (in UK terms, within 30 miles) to Greenham Common, near Reading, is AWRE - the Atomic Weapons Research Establishment. Plus ca change etc.

dsavitsk 3,046 Report post Posted March 7, 2016 This won't mean much to anyone here, but Elizabet Garrett died at age 52. She was my law school professor for Civ Pro and Legislation, and when the law school had a dean scandal, she was the obvious choice to be the replacement. Instead she was snubbed and went to USC. She recently became the president of Cornell. http://cornellsun.com/2016/03/07/cornells-president-elizabeth-garrett-dies-at-age-52-less-than-one-year-after-assuming-office/
Voltron 19,042 Report post Posted March 7, 2016 Sorry to hear that, Doug. I'll pass along to my wife who got her PhD there. Sad that Cornell finally had a woman president but she didn't love kind enough to fulfill what sounds like a very promising future. RIP
