Saw Sarah McLachlan and Feist last night at Red Rocks.   Amazing!

  • First indoor show since covid -- Jeff Tweedy at the Fillmore. He's added another son on backing vocals in addition to the drummer.  We also found the poster for the show we saw 20 days befo

  • The stage is cloaked in mystery, or at least a red fog, before the Stromae concert begins. Here with Claire, Sophie and her gf Ella.

The Mucky Duck....#WINNING!  I haven't been in soooo long.

We got to see The English Beat (label in the U.S.) with General Public at the Bayou Music Center last weekend.  I have to say Dave Wakeling is still jamming well.  The two bands put on a great show IMHO.

Adam Ant....well, let's just say he has a good band.  The percussion section was impressive.

Not playing yet, but coming up: Sarah Jarosz in Lowell on Friday August 30th.  I will likely get tix, Karen may join or may be up in Maine with her sister.  Letting @n_maher and @en480c4 know just in case (that is Labor Day weekend, though).

I enjoyed the Sarah Jarosz show i saw recently.

Friday, I went and saw JJ Grey and Mofro at the Shed in Maryville.  It was good for what it was, even tho I wasn't in the mood for it.  I stuck it out for the recording, which I think turned out ok:

I believe I have Brighter Days live downloaded.  I expect that would be a pretty cool show.

First night of the Violent Femmes tour. Waiting and admiring a very large sax on stage.

On the wall we found a photo of the u2 concert I saw here. Definitely one day my top five rock concerts. So funny to see those fro's on Bono and Adam Clayton.

The Femmes show was a lot of fun and they were just as rough around the edges as ever. They have never performed their albums start to finish but it worked well. They played Hallowed Ground first and then their self titled first album after a brief intermission. Three songs made up the encore and sent the aged crowd home happy.

The giant sax is apparently a Contrabass Saxophone and sounded like a fog horn even compared to the baritone sax that Blaise Garza also played. The other unusual instrument was the Weber kettle bbq that the drummer played.

Nice! Love the Femmes and saxophone! I was wondering if that was a bass or contrabass; was thinking CB but there are some basses out there that are less compact, seemingly.

That is an octave below a bari sax and TWO octaves below alto (which is what I play, and @Aura and @thrice and some others around here use to play, IIRC.)

That thing is a beast; I love it.

The Femmes sax player is Blaise Garza, and while he appears to play the entire range he bills himself as the Femmes' "Contrabass Saxophone Player".  Seems like a CB!

Beth and I went to see the Chicago Symphony last night conducted by Neeme Järvi, doing the Mahler 2nd. Excellent performance, much better than when we saw this with MTT conducting back in the mid 2000's, although the mezzo-soprano back then (Lorraine Hunt Lieberman) was stunning doing the 4th movement ("Urlicht").

One of the longest standing ovations I've witnessed (> 5 mins). 90 minutes is a long time to sit (1st world problems).

Interesting, do you prefer the Mahler / Vienna orchestra layout with the split violins or the one here? (Do you remember which layout was used back in the day when you heard it)?

That's just silly. If you split the violins they'd no longer resonate the beautiful music. Do you split them right down the middle? Do you then have to use two bows?

I don't have a preference and frankly never noticed it. I would guess that the previous performance was a similar layout as well. Is this somewhat at the discretion of the conductor, or is it more orchestra preference? The previous conductor was MTT who I am not a fan of.

It’s pretty noticeable because the second violins don’t play in a way that projects sound into the hall. Go listen to your favorite stereo mix and it will be immediately noticeable as the cellos won’t be in the hard right channel. It creates more “space” for sure in some of the more complex string passages.

its pretty traditional for Mahler.

I agree. That’s why we just have to end the violence once and for all.

Hello Sonoma!

Sonoma Sundays on the plaza

With

Maria Muldaur

As an 81 year old lady, she can still sing the blues, but asks us to be present and put away our phones, cameras and video's and pay attention as "She's trying to work over here" . I can only respect her wishes.

After a rockin' hour and a quarter set she's taking a well deserved break, before doing the same again.

As I said to Joanne, this audience makes you feel young 😉

She has quite a repertoire of other people's songs, but she sang one of her few self penned numbers, from the pandemic.

We should all be lucky enough to have so much life in us, at her age.

Her red hot Louisiana blues band are not too shabby either.

And then in the second set they did the "big three"

Including A song about a camel that's now celebrating its 50th anniversary. " It's been good to me, I hope it was good for you"

Like, hey,

(Ffffffffft, woooooooh)

The sad remnants of Big Brother and the Holding Company, who are apparently town residents. Their singer doesn't have quite the same presence as the original.
