Some of you are aware that Tyll has been attempting to start an International Headphone organization. The primary purpose of this organization would be to plan and hold the National and some large regional meets. It would also be an independent organization tasked with promoting the headphone hobby. The plan was to use the excess funds from the National meet to start this organization as a 501c3. Tyll has spent a great deal of time and energy working on this project. He stated from the very beginning that he wanted the organization to be democratic with an elected board. After it got going Tyll specifically did not want to be in charge of it. Well yesterday Jude basica…

About 11 years ago as best I recall, I had to buy a pair of crutches and use them for several weeks because of a severely sprained ankle. Fast forward to tonight when I was on Skype chatting with my former fiancee's daughter who is getting married this summer and has been pestering me of late to "sponsor" one thing or another in connection to her wedding (someone is sponsoring her bridal shower, someone else her flowers at the wedding, someone else the photographer, etc.) and suddenly I've been more like her real dad than the man himself. I told her that I'd sponsor the green beans, but she claims they're not included on the menu. I'll probably get stuck with the e…

I am considering getting rid of all cable/sattelite TV service (currently DirecTV) and going with the combination of Netflix, Amazon Instant Video, Hulu Plus, and online sports subscriptions. I have neighbors doing this and they've liked it, while saving a ton of money. For what I pay for DTV, and how little we watch TV, it's hardly worth it. As it is, we currently watch mostly Netflix and Amazon anyway. For sports, I'm watching mostly on iPad, because my kids are on the TV, and I've found this to be fine, sometimes preferable, since I don't have to scroll through 600+ channels to find the game I want. Plus I can watch it on my lap while I passively watch whatever the …

  6. The O.E.D. is a historical dictionary, providing citations meant to show the evolution of every word, beginning with the earliest known usage. So a key task, and a popular sport for thousands of volunteer word aficionados, is antedating: finding earlier citations than those already known. This used to be painstakingly slow and chancy. When Paton started in new words, she found herself struggling with headcase. She had current citations, but she says she felt sure it must be older, and books were of little use. She wandered around the office muttering headcase, headcase, headcase... See here. [NYTimes]

So... For all of the super comics guys/gals here I've been eagerly anticipating the DC Comics Blackest Night Event, me being a "casual" and rather new comics reader I went to my local shop and created a "box" to subscribe to the series. It's maybe 6ish issues in now (crossovers) and I wanted to see what everyone thinks so far. To be honest yesterday I said to myself, all of these issues so far are pretty weak albiet highly rated by the comics community. Pretty much every issue I've read centers around the fact that the dead are coming to life and pwning all life... Sounds exactly to me like Marvel Zombies But in all seriousness, I'm TO'd that this is ALL that…

My Sister who lives in Arlington (a few bolcks from Metro) called me today asking for help moving tomorrow, so I'm heading down to help (basically watching the movers). I'm going to stay at least through Saturday morning, so that gives me all day Friday to sight see. My last time in DC was in the early to mid 90's (visited the Holocaust Museum shortly after it opened), and I haven't been to the Smithsonian since the 80's. Where should I go? there was a burger place back in the 70's (Bon Appetite - President Ford use to send Secret Service agents there to get take out. When I was younger it was the air & space that drew me, now perhaps the National Gallery suits me …

I stumbled across this thread on Audiocircle- http://www.audiocircle.com/circles/index.php?topic=44200.0 Any thoughts? I'm not that bothered by the initial complaint/premise of the thread, but the way so many people bashed the OP for calling out this behavior seriously disturbs me. Echoes of another place? (at least this time the mods aren't into it- visibily, anyway)

Hey y'all! I have a conference in Denver in May this year, and before I hit the Googlenetweb I just had a couple of quick questions of you folks since I know many of you live in or have visited the city...... Is Colorado worth hanging around in for a holiday at that time of year? Any broad hotel recommendations near the Colorado Convention Centre and/or nightlife areas? Thanks!

I desperately need a good desk lamp. Using the computer as a light source just isn't a great idea for many reason. I noticed that Softech DL-90 has really good reviews on amazon and I like the idea of using LEDs and having a natural-like light source. I was wondering if anyone has used a similar type of light or has any alternatives?
