Speaking of which, I just got an L3000, and it is the best shit ever! Or, "...evar!" That I owned, anyway. ("That I pwned, anywayz.")

I've been thinking about this quite a bit since the Hamilton meet a week ago. I heard the K501, K1000, K701, RS-1, PS-1, and GS1000 among others, and I came away somewhat saddened and disappointed. To me, the new flagship headphones from AKG and Grado failed to capture the magic of their predecessors. They were arguably more even all-round performers, but it was the evenness of mediocrity and plainness. Simply put, these headphones try to be everything to everyone, and in doing so end up being boring, bland, and lacking in magic. Sure the K701 has a flatter more extended frequency response than the K501 or K1000, and is more detailed than the former, but it comes at an…

I finally managed to get a few hours to myself to head into the city, have a relaxing lunch and try out the W1000X in the Best Denki, which has a high-end headphone listening table. When I arrived, they were plugged into the AT-HA2002 and sourced from a Sony SACD player. I didn't note the model as I've become a source snob and consider just about anything sigma-delta to sound harsh and digital. Ignoring the inevitable fact that my the classical tracks on the CD I brought with me were going to annoy me in that regard, as well as a lack of familiarity with AT amps, I concentrated on what I could of the sound. Shotgun summary: Imagine W1000s with more treble, or W5000s wi…

Probably a question asked many times, but I'll ask it again. My HD650 is toast. I need a new pair of dynamics. And I'm far too profligate for $350 phones. What has a decent chance of being released that doesn't sound like ass (even if you owned it, useless meet impressions notwithstanding)?

Hello my fellow HCers, I had the MDR-CD3000 and ATH-W11JPN side by side for about 2 weeks so I thought I’d do a mini review/impressions thread for you guys. Its more towards a CD3000 though. I have owned the W11jpn for a couple of months now and have purchased the CD3000 recently. Gears used with the headphones are my Creative MoVo2FM 5GB, early ‘90s vintage(?) Samsung Z98G CDP, MicroShar u107B amp and some silver and copper interconnects. My iBasso D1 is out for repairs, so I had no chance to test with it. It will be back in a few days time though. The MuVo is quite neutral sounding player while the Samsung CDP has a slightly aggressive sound to it + quite detailed…

http://www.headfonia.com/the-sennheiser-hd700-journal/ Sennheiser HD 800 vs HD700 by drjlo1, on Flickr Aside from any sonic competence it may or may not possess, I find it difficult to believe that any company, let alone a dominant multi-national corp like Sennheiser, is capable of coming up with such a Fugly design for a $1000 headphone. Pricing HD800 now at $1500 and HD700 at $1000 is quite ludicrous, and while I will give HD700 a listen when available, for those who wish for "HD650 musicality with a little better technicals," I still recommend a used HD600, recabled with better cable and removing the veil with "foam mod" and using the money left over for a…

There's a pair of really nice looking SR-404LE's for sale at another site. $700.00 ... I got the itch to pull the trigger just because; fatter cable, swanker looks, leather pads ... and supposedly pretty great on the Lambda scale (I've read the main threads here at Hcase re: such)... But already having the 307's (my secondary cans) and some Koss ESP950's (my main, most loved cans) ... just not sure if I'd regret a $700 purchase for a minimal improvement over either of my current cans (especially the ESP950's which I consider quite dramatically better than my 307's... Really pretty, though, that's for sure. Also not sure if $700 used is fair or not ...

Anyone heard these things? I have some 9's, which even with all their coloration and funky bass, can sound good at times (with my EAR HP4 or Raptor). I put in a bid on an auction not thinking I would have a chance to win, and now I may.

Because it's alright for her to buy a $600 pair of shoes Many thanks to Ken (Toonie). I've only listened to one album so far: Porcupine Tree - Deadwing (prog with loud/soft songs) I really know and love this album, and right now I'm hearing a clarity I have not heard in any other Grado. Only the K1000. But I'm also hearing a certain weight to the electric guitar that I have never heard on this album. And Steven Wilson sounds clear as day. Also this is the hardest hitting bass I have experienced (save for the PS-1), maybe it's because I'm using flats, but even the HF-1 doesn't hit this hard Very impres…

Whats the going rate for a stock HF-1, and what did they originally retail for? I've never paid this can any attention in the past, but I've recently become interested. Thanks.

QUAD's new "FLOAT QA" headphones coming to the New York Show I am exited to see this. Since I am going to the show I will make a point to listed to these and see how I like them. My Float collection might get a new member if I like these. Anyone else is exited to see this coming to NYC show?

Lately I've been thinking if a home rig is really even worth it. I haven't used my home rig intensively for about 5 months. I really only use it when I am programming on my computer for school. I listen to music non-stop, but I've been using my portable setup the most. I guess I'm just at the point where I wonder if its worth all this. I have: Cardas cabled (balanced) k340, balanced 325i, my custom tube amp, Zhaolu, monster hts2500mkII. I figure I could sell it all and upgrade the weak link in my portable setup (e2c) to (e500). My portable consists of Zen Vision:m, pint, e2 and k81dj. I know this decision is really best answered myself, but I'm hoping for some w…

Ok, I need help buying some headphones as I am undecided on which ones I should buy. I would like some headphones (pref.) under ~$400 USD. I will be listening to music (mostly) from my iPhone 4 or Mac. But I also have a high-end Vinyl player, and a Les Paul (which I can plug in my headphones). Those two might be considered audiophile but that is not the primary use (though I will use them) of my headphones, so I don't know if I should get audiophile headphones. I will be listening mostly to Classic Rock/Rock. Pink Floyd (Dark Side of the Moon), Led Zep, etc. I really like listening to high quality music, but not sure if the headphones would make a big difference sin…

Guys, I may be in the market for some headphones. Knowing next to nothing about what's out there, I could use suggestions. Basically, I own two sets of phones. Etymotic 4p's that I bought in 2001 or 2002, and RS-1's I bought in 2003. I use the ety's when I am on airplanes, and that's about it. They are kind of OK, but the banging cord is too annoying. I love the RS-1's -- enough that I haven't really thought about buying anything else for almost 6 years. But, I need some office phones. I am looking for $200 or less. Used is fine but they need to be findable quickly. Open is OK, but the Grados probably leak too much sound. Other things -- punchy (Grado-esque) bass …

Basically i got this huge wad of cash, and i need your advice on how to spend it. I don't want to do anything too silly. I was thinking of getting a few happy meals at mcdonalds... then maybe spluring the change on pennies i can throw out the window of my car. I was thinking also, maybe i can pickup an airhorn. I can use it inapropriate times (ex funerals, in the bathroom at my office when some guy is in the can). You guys think i should get a source? What kind of source can i get for that kinda scratch???

Assume there's gonna be plenty of talk when these are eventually released so figured I'd start a thread as there's new info today. They finally have a price, $1,099 & $699, and order date (at least for the PM-1) of mid-April. http://www.oppodigital.com/headphones-pm-1/ http://www.oppodigital.com/future/ "In addition to the OPPO PM-1, we will also release an OPPO PM-2 model which will be a more affordable version of the premium OPPO PM-1. The OPPO PM-2 will have very similar performance while reducing costs to the customer. It utilizes the same planar magnetic driver, the same acoustic design principles and tuning techniques, the same tight tolerances for quality…

What are people's opinions on the best closed headphones, current or past production? I'm assuming that the list is down to the R10, L3k, perhaps CD3k and the Ultrasone Editions. Did I miss anything? Current generation woodies like the DX1000 (owned, didn't like, sold) and AT's (too much upper midrange)? I heard the K340 with sealed back and didn't like it - much better open IMO. One of my QUAD's died, and I used that as a good opportunity to sell them through the repair place. I have been thinking hard as to what to replace the setup with, and am feeling increasingly that a closed headphone that I can really enjoy would be a worthy replacement as my apartment is ju…
