Grok Headphones in Fullness

  1. Started by JBLoudG20,

Lately I've been thinking if a home rig is really even worth it. I haven't used my home rig intensively for about 5 months. I really only use it when I am programming on my computer for school. I listen to music non-stop, but I've been using my portable setup the most. I guess I'm just at the point where I wonder if its worth all this. I have: Cardas cabled (balanced) k340, balanced 325i, my custom tube amp, Zhaolu, monster hts2500mkII. I figure I could sell it all and upgrade the weak link in my portable setup (e2c) to (e500). My portable consists of Zen Vision:m, pint, e2 and k81dj. I know this decision is really best answered myself, but I'm hoping for some w…

Basically i got this huge wad of cash, and i need your advice on how to spend it. I don't want to do anything too silly. I was thinking of getting a few happy meals at mcdonalds... then maybe spluring the change on pennies i can throw out the window of my car. I was thinking also, maybe i can pickup an airhorn. I can use it inapropriate times (ex funerals, in the bathroom at my office when some guy is in the can). You guys think i should get a source? What kind of source can i get for that kinda scratch???

I managed to get a pair for pretty cheap, but I'm not really expecting much. At the very least I hope they can trump the KSC-75 for movies and laptop use.

Ignoring the suggested retail prices, and the headphones selected... I found it interesting to see the trend in HeadRoom's updated "Ultimate Head Phone" guide. I seem to remember that it used to contain some bargain contenders.... but as $1000 becomes the norm for "flag ships" I see that they only slip two or three choices under the 1k mark now, and the bulk of the pack heading north of $1200. http://www.headphone.com/selection-guide/top-picks/ultimate-headphones.php

  5. I've been loving my dt-250's at the office (and growing to despise the dt-990's treble. It's all hunky-dory until you get a bad recording. yikes), and while moving some boxes around at home I found my old Koss A-250 headphones from circa 2000. The headband clip for the right phone is finicky and the leatherette cups are starting to peel, but they really do have a sweet midrange (if not as warm as I prefer, see the beyer dt-250's). Their bass sort of sucks imho though - I have to boost them quite a bit to get a natural sounding bass quantity. A quick search or two reveals they were a FOTM a while back on HF, but I was too busy futzing with Stata to read about headphones at…

As seen on H-F today: http://www.sennheiser.com/sennheiser/icm_eng.nsf/root/press_releases_07.01.2008 http://www.sennheiser.com/sennheiser/icm_eng.nsf/root/press_releases__07.01.2008 http://www.sennheiser.com/sennheiser/icm_eng.nsf/root/press_releases__07.01.2008_ Seems as if the awaited new top of the line model isn't here yet. I wonder if they'll have a surprise at CES? They seem to be following the IEM trend, so I wonder if they are even interested in a 'new' 650. If the 650 is doing well, my mess with it?

So I just read Darth Nut's review of the O2s, and wow, it is without a doubt the best review of a piece of audio equipment I have ever read, hands down, no contest. What really blows my mind is how conceptually clear the review was. He basically articulated a coherent conceptual framework for audio review and applied it to an actual piece of audio equipment in a consistent, logical manner and backed it up with supporting evidence. It combines both his subjective perceptual experiences and his concepts in a way that shows the reader his thought process. Honestly this should be required reading for anyone interested in describing audio equipments.

  9. Could anyone point out the precise differences between the Stax SR-202 and the SR-303? I understand that the difference between the '303 and '404 is only the cable, but I was wondering what about the '202? I have read something about it somewhere (how's that for being vague.. . Maybe in the Stax thread), but I am unable to trace it back. Thanks for the help!

  10. Hi guys, any of you own both? Or have you heard them side by side in a good setup? I currently have the W11jpn, and I am 100% sure of owning the L3000 in the near future (couple of months time). The thing is, I kinda have my eyes on something right now and I was wondering if I should sell the W11jpn to finance that purchase since I'm gonna need some quick $. To rephrase, is the L3000 different enough from the W11jpn to justify owning them both? Any of you miss owning the W11jpn after getting a pair of L3000? I'm generally happy with the W11jpn, but it could use a tad more punch and speed in the bass dept. and a little more detail won't hurt either. As noted below, t…

  11. https://geardiary.com/2017/07/25/even-h2-wireless-headphones/ My Christmas present this year! So, I haven’t been able to enjoy high end audio gear for almost three years now due to an inner ear infection which left me with high frequency hearing loss above 8khz, tinnitus, and intolerance to spl above 80db ... all only in my left ear. If you’re interested, it’s called secondary endolymph hydrops. Basically I have too much pressure of the fluid in my left inner ear. It sucks. Nothing sounds good any more. Detail in my left ear... gone. Soundstage ... gone. Anything above a minimal volume hurts in my left ear. Minimal volume which is tolerable…

Shit. I'd been listening to my RS-1s for a couple of hours. These are the darker wood used ones I bought from Larry at Headphile a couple of months back. I stopped the music and turned off the amp to roll out the tung sol's and RCA grey glass 6sn7, and roll in the sylvania gold pin 5687s and a Ken Rad vt-231 6sn7. All the tubes are firmly in place, and I crank up the amp. A few seconds later, I hear an alarming POP noise come from the general vicinity of my headphones and amp. Just a singular, loud, POP. The RS-1s are now only producing sound from the right cup. I plugged in the HD650 and everything is fine. I even rolled out the tubes in desperation, to no avail. F…

I have a KGSS and SR007 Mk2. I usually leave my KGSS on all the time. Is it best to leave the headphones plugged into the KGSS all the time to allow full charge or to just plug them in a little while before a listening session?

This is my first post on head-case, so I hope I'll get some helpful input without being judged too harshly. Intro: I used to own a pair of Martin Logan speakers Summit, paired with a 200W integrated amp from McIntosh. I sold the lot a few years ago as I moved to another continent... I've longed to get back to this sound ever since. I'm now looking for headphones that'll recreate somewhat (I know it's impossible) that ML sound. I've been into hifi for a while, and though not a professional myself, I've built some deep knowledge of how the market works. I've never had that much of a knowledge base about headphones however... but I have some serious reserve about t…

A friend alerted me to this and I didn't see it posted anywhere else: http://gizmodo.com/5990520/scientists-have-made-graphene-earphones-and-theyre-amazing I'm not really surprised that a membrane that thin yet strong can produce good sound. But I am excited to see who adopts this tech first and what sort of amp is required to drive them.

  19. Started by spritzer,

So here is an odd one. To try and improve the KingSound KS-H1 I need new earpads. Now I could just use Stax ones as they are about the right size but 150$ earpads on a 500$ headphone... That leaves me with dynamics and I'm well out of my comfort zone. What I need are 95-105mm earpads that are solid, leather or pleather. One thing that is never listed is the diameter of headphones so you give me some suggestions? Audio-Technica, Fostex/Denon etc. all make models that might work but I don't know the diameter of the pads.

Ahoi, I've been searching for quite a while now. What I want is a comfortable, good sounding headphone which offers a bit isolation. First, let me sum up what I already heard: Shure SRH840 (good overall but not good enough in the end) Audio Technica ATH-W5000 (very nice overall but the strange coloration can be a problem, I really loved the bass and highs) AKG K-271 (I liked the bass and the mids but overall I found it to be a bit too boring) Compact Monitors Stage 3 (custom inears from Germany, almost perfect but my anatomy has problems with inears so I left that path completely) Westone UM3x (before the Stage 3, also nice but in absolute terms a bit lacking) …

  22. Started by spritzer,

So all the old stuff about these is buried in the Stax thread but since I just bought a lightly used set of KS-M3 and M10 it was perhaps time to give them their own thread. So I owned both the H1 and H2...and both were terrible. Truly awful but there are still people out there claiming the H3's are really good so...I was curious. I got the combo at a nice enough price so why not. Kevin thinks I'm nuts for buying a third one of these but hey... I guess he's right. The amp will await inspection but I connected the phones to the Carbon CC for a listen. Ok...a small spoiler here...they aren't good. Like at all and more of a shame on other electrostatics... …

  25. Hi guys, I had a Sennheiser HD595 for many years and that was an okay headphone and I've used it for 8 maybe close to 10 years now, but now that I'm beginning to learn musical instruments and starting to appreciate music for fully, I'm in the market for a set of new headphone and was hoping if anyone could perhaps point me in the right direction or better yet, give me a few recommendations. The headphone's usage will be primarily for home listening. The range of music will be predominately classical & flamenco guitar (acoustic), piano, and sometimes jazz, blues, progressive rock, ambient, electronic (lol i guess i listed pretty much all the genres here) but …
