Since the Darkest Desires thread never went over well (I think the name turned some people off ), and I know there are a few of you who have a rather extensive music collection, I am curious to see if anything has changed from the old Desires threads back on HF. Any new favorite albums or recent discoveries? I know there is the "What are you listening to" thread, but that is a little light on the info and not specific. Here are a few albums that have been getting some serious playing time lately: Mar de Grises Melodic Doom/Death Metal from Chile. While I love Swallow the Sun's first three albums, I have no idea why this band has not overtaken their popularit…

A while back, some head-caser (I forget who) made some disparaging remarks about ambient, IDM, and drum n bass. While it is far beyond my abilities to defend Monotonous Snare Music, I do have a keen interest into the other genres. "IDM" (Intelligent Dance Music) is kind of a misnomer at this point, as virtually none of it is remotely danceable. The truth is "IDM" meant something quite different in the first half of the 90s, when it served to differentiate from dance music that was more than insipid house music or moronic raver noise like (shudder) happy hardcore. I used to read the IDM mailing list on hyperreal.org. They had a keen "IDM" logo in the style of IBM. Sa…

This was an idea suggested by Voltskool at the end of last semester. Instead of posting when I'm on the air in Slow Forum, I'm going to bump this thread with the appropriate links. If there are any other HCers who do webcasts or anything similar, feel free to post about them in here. Old code because I'm busy DJing and don't have time to fix it: Sup, Heads? My radio show is on the air right now, in Case you wanted to listen.

There seem to be a lot of jazz fans here, and a number of SF Bay Area folks as well. If you get a chance to make it out to Oaktown, the Oakland Museum of California has an exhibit, "Birth of the Cool," highlighting jazz, design and art from midcentury California. For a jazz newbie like me, it was very educational. Even if you are an expert, there are a lot of audio/video works to enjoy, and a nice collection of photographs of many jazz greats taken by William Claxton. Here's a link: Birth of the Cool California Art, Design, and Culture at Midcentury

I just bought Fleetwood Mac's "Rumours" from HD Tracks. It is supposedly 24/96, but with some of the recent hubbub about what is really going on inside the tracks, I downloaded Audacity and ran a Spectrum Analysis on "Never Going Back Again." The screenshot is attached. I don't know how to read these things. Can someone let me know what, if anything, can be seen here? EDIT: Added Plot Spectrum.

I am a big fan of Christian McBride, Steve Gadd, Everette Harp and consider Hajime the owner of East Winds Imports a good friend. I am sadden by the huge devastation that Japan has experienced with the tsunami and thought I would just pass this along. Jazz for Japan.

The chart colors are a little iffy, but if you squint the conclusions are pretty clear. File sharing hurts record labels and benefits artists. Not only are artists now making much more money from live performances, but their total share of the music industry pie is growing as the labels' share declines.

I'm not really familiar with Aphex Twin, but I found this awesome mashup: http://www.100dbs.com/mixes/aphex/ I'm not a huge fan of mashups, but some of these cuts are awesome. The last one with Kool Keith is amazing, and Breathe And Stop (Q-Tip) is much better than the original imo. The other one I really like is Time's Up For Freeman, Hardy And Willis with O.C. The rest are ok or kind of bad, but definitely listen to those 3 if you like hip-hop or Aphex Twin, or music in general.

I decided to expand on my mid-year report card for my end-of-year ranking. Any one of the albums receiving an A could be considered my Album of the Year, but if forced to choose one it would have to be Rasputina's Oh Perilous World. The rest of my ramblings are as follows... A | Catherine Anne Davies - The Piano EP Another haunting collection of songs from Ms. Davies. Nothing groundbreaking here, but the simple and straight-forward songs and her voice create a haunting atmosphere that's difficult to describe but not easily forgotten. Samples available here. A | Epica - The Divine Conspiracy Since picking this up, I've explored their back catalog and came away unim…

I'd been meaning to start this thread here, and then I saw someone had created on over there. So that was enough to get me to put some thoughts down on my favorite releases of 2008, which has gotten off to a great start with some fantastic albums... Kira Lynn Cain - The Ideal Hunter I'll quote a review I read elsewhere, which sums things up much better than I ever could... Definitely a great album worth some attention. Draconian - Turning Season Within Another strong outing from one of my favorite bands. More straight-forward songwriting than past efforts, with more female vocals and great atmosphere. Goldfrapp - Seventh Tree A very…

In the tradition of the following threads... '07 Mid-Year Report Card '07 Year-End Report Card '08 Mid-Year Report Card ... it seemed time, or even past time, to revisit this tradition. Each year I find an album or two worth checking out thanks to the impressions in these threads by those here at the -Case. Unfortunately my preliminary list has 30 titles released in '08, and countless others that are a year or two old but are new to me. So I'm going to need to make some time to sit down and go through them, slap a grade on each and follow up with the appropriate comments. Despite tales of the downfall of good music, I found this year to be better than decent (even…

Wow looks like a cool line-up this year: http://www.bluegrass.com/telluride/lineup.html I'm probably not going unless Alison Krauss & Union Station show up again, but since they have a new album coming out in April, my guess is that they might be there. Anyone think they might travel out for this?

Seeing BlessingX's post over on the ",..listening to" of "My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts" reminded me that I meant to post a link to the Byrne/Eno site where you can download the multitrack session for a couple of the cuts from that album (which I just plain wore out when it was first released). So, if you have a DAW/Editing software with multitrack capabilities, check it out. It's too much fun to play around with the tracks and create your own mix of "Help Me Someone" or "My Secret Life". Once you've downloaded all 24 tracks of "Help Me,.." , try de-constructing it by soloing (to hear the single track alone) then muting that track. Another fun thing, I kinda like to s…
