Anyone have a favorite rendition of this Gershwin tune? Have a few variations here, but listening to the Sinead O'Connor take at the moment and it's a bit of a killer. Know there are at least 3,000 versions floating around, so wondering what's your pick? Frank? Ella? Amy?

Thought I would start this up here as there are a nice series of threads on the SH forum called "listening to on vinyl" where people post pics of the album art/label/vinyl. And people are taking pics in the "drinking now" thread, so what the hell.... I don't expect this thread to get much action, but maybe it will Horace Silver Quintet - 6 Pieces of Silver (Music Matters 2LP, 45 rpm)

Seeing BlessingX's post over on the ",..listening to" of "My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts" reminded me that I meant to post a link to the Byrne/Eno site where you can download the multitrack session for a couple of the cuts from that album (which I just plain wore out when it was first released). So, if you have a DAW/Editing software with multitrack capabilities, check it out. It's too much fun to play around with the tracks and create your own mix of "Help Me Someone" or "My Secret Life". Once you've downloaded all 24 tracks of "Help Me,.." , try de-constructing it by soloing (to hear the single track alone) then muting that track. Another fun thing, I kinda like to s…

Very sad news today. No real details yet. Far too young. RIP beautiful lady, you will be missed. http://blogs.wsj.com...dead-at-age-48/ http://blogs.wsj.com...dead-at-age-48/ Similar links can be found on the abc, huffington post, and cbc websites (among others), so it seems to be confirmed... although none of them have provided any details at this point.

I have received this letter from Maria Schneider, for being a newsletter subscriber at Artistshare: Dear Antonio J., It's with great sadness that I share news of Bob Brookmeyer's death. I've loved Bob's compositions and arrangements and his playing since the moment I first heard his music in the '70s. It turned my life around. Bob became a wonderful teacher, mentor and dear friend. And he was enormously generous to those lucky enough to be his friend. Oddly, Bob's newest recording came out last week--an astoundingly beautiful vocal album of arrangements where every cut is a perfect gem. It's one of those that you just want to listen to again and again. I've r…

Paul Motian passed away a week ago and Fresh Air had a nice tribute/older interview that hit upon Bill Evans, Monk, and Keith Jarrett. Worth a listen. "I'm not a showpiece drummer. ... I feel like I'm an accompanist. It's my sort of thing to make the other people sound good, as good as they can be. I feel like I should accompany them, and I should accompany the sound that I am hearing and make it the best that I can — that I can do."

Their new album A Dramatic Turn of Events, with Mangini drumming, sounded real good to me. I feel that Andy Wallace did a good job mixing, because everything shines through the mix! Another favourite track of mine is The Count of Tuscany.Being an aspiring guitarist, it's always a pleasure to listen to Petrucci's fluid solos. What are some of your favourite tracks?

I just bought Fleetwood Mac's "Rumours" from HD Tracks. It is supposedly 24/96, but with some of the recent hubbub about what is really going on inside the tracks, I downloaded Audacity and ran a Spectrum Analysis on "Never Going Back Again." The screenshot is attached. I don't know how to read these things. Can someone let me know what, if anything, can be seen here? EDIT: Added Plot Spectrum.

I'm startin down the rippin road. I need to unload a batch of older CDs and am ripping them with EAC. My assumptions for using flac.exe to do this are: * There is no upsampling feature I can use with EAC (from 16/44 to 24/96) * The flac file format should be fairly future-safe. * I can play flac files on many DACs that I may be able to buy today. I am also assuming that when I read about others here with a 24/96 flac file that the file was first a 24/96 WAV which was then compressed to 24/96 flac. Is that correct? (Or is there a way to do this in a batch process maybe with Adobe Audition? Probably. ) My real question is: are my assumptions correct…

Quite a bargain on the hybrid SACD of Gilbert Kaplan and the Vienna Philharmonic version. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00009Y30W/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&m=A96CQQZGK78UG If you have a SACD player and like Mahler, don't think, buy it! There are only 3 left as of this posting. It's sold by Newbury Comics and fulfilled by Amazon, so Prime shipping applies if you're a member. Normally, when I've bought from 3rd party sellers, they can't tell the difference between a SACD and regular redbook audio CD. But in this case, I got the real deal SACD version. And I can confirm it's 5.1 multichannel. I have the Ivan Fischer and the Budapest F…

Oh don't freak out, I'm talking about music. As many seem to do as they get a bit older, I seem to be getting a bit stale as to new artists. I thought a thread where people could toss out some recommendations might be handy. As for my musical taste... as far as genres, nothing's really off the table. I'm not a big fan of Rap, but there are exceptions of coarse. I think the Bluegrass-Rap that opens up the series Justified is brilliant. I love, love, love great female vocalist. Alison Krauss, Nora Jones, Alison Moyet, Billie Holiday etc... I also love great male vocalist. Buble, Brian Ferry, Tony Hadley, Freddie Mercury, Ray Price etc... I like Jazz, …

I am not sure any of you have heard of the small Russian band of two called Kauan before. The main force behind it is Anton Belov, who plays guitar, keyboards, and does vocals. The other member, Lubov Mushnikova, plays violin. Though the band comes from Russia, most of the lyrics are Finnish. To date, four albums have been released: Lumikuuro (2007), Tietäjän Laulu (2008), Aava tuulen maa (2009), and Kuu... (2011). The first two albums are considered a mix of folk, doom, and black metal. Having said this, the main sound consists of beautiful melodies driven by piano and guitar with a mix of both clean and back metal vocals. I am not really a fan of black metal,…
