Waffling context begins... My parents house has two front rooms, one of which has been since year dot the living room, and has the television and sofas and is generally where people sit and veg out or chat or read the paper or whatever. The other front room has been known since I was a little kiddie as "the music room". It wasn't called this because mum played cello in there, or because there's a piano, but because it is where my dad installed his hi-fi in the mid/late 80s. I'm working on a pair of speakers that will be 13.5" high, 7" wide, and 14.75" deep at the base. What sort of rule of thumb do you use when choosing appropriate stands? As I've mentioned in another post, I'm trying to assemble an inexpensive computer rig for a friend. I know it's unlikely anyone has heard all the components, but anyone got any very positive or exclusionary experience with: NuForce Icon & NuForce S-1 vintage DAC (likely Sonic Frontiers TransDAC/Assemblage DAC1) & Audioengine A2s So USB DAC/amp & speakers versus DAC & active monitors. Leaning towards the latter (already have the DAC which would connect optically to his iMac), but both setups would in the end be ~$500. Unfortunately, buying both and returning the items of one set isn't possible in this case. Any words of advice?

I have a pair of QUAD 12L Pro Active speakers on some rather chunky and expensive stands that have sat completely unused since I sold my Balanced Home 3 months ago, which was also serving as a digital preamp. I have nothing to drive them with, and am not really too excited to purchase something, but if I did, it would need to be a DAC/Preamp w/volume control all in one. Balanced outputs would be great, but not important. So, my question is, what can I buy to give them a nice signal, or should I just get rid of them alltogether? Not to mention it removes the biggest obstacle I have with DIY speakers: cabinet making. Powered speakers make a lot of sense to me, but they don't seem to be popular in Hi-Fi, so what's the deal? Are there some fundamental disadvantages to using powered speakers, or is it just custom and tradition?

Hey guys, Well I am trying to start my research into speakers...again. Last time I went into it kind of half assed, and it actually didn't turn so bad last time. Picked up some moth cicadas that mated with my old moth s2a3 and I thought they were pretty great for the price and the fact they were single drivers - very coherent, beautiful midrange, nice full tone, but obviously lacking the low end registers. I would say down to 50 it was pretty solid. the omega hemps had the bass but they were somewhat sharp on the high end and had nowhere near the midrange magic of the cicadas. Hey all, AV123.COM is clearing out their "ELT" line of speakers, for some pretty cheap prices with free delivery. This line looks nice, with some nice finishes. I owned the monitors (little softer/warmer sounding), still own the towers (REAL nice deal at this price), and the center channel (have it, but haven't set it up yet; have read it's so-so). But the towers at $249 Cherry/$259 Rosewood (though these may be out of stock now) delivered are a great deal IMO. I'm planning on building a 2.0 speaker system for music and movies for a home-theater setup within the next 3-4 months, so I recently started researching speakers, receivers, DVD players, and HDTVs (I'm still creaking by with an analog TV so I'll have to get an HDTV before February next year anyway). Tyrion posting his Compact Hemps for sale got me interested yesterday, so I did a bit of internet searchage. I like the looks of the Omega company, and their speakers look very nice, and reasonably priced to boot. I'm a newb when it comes to high efficiency speakers and SET amps (its high efficiency right, not low efficiency?), but I admit the simplicity of it all appeals to me (single ended triode -> single driver). So what do Omegas sound like? Do they like bigger rooms or smaller rooms?

The latest version of the Maggie 1.6 was powered with an ARC tube amp and Conrad Johnson preamp with my North Star M192 (Cary CDP used as transport). First time hearing these speakers I was a bit unimpressed; they were bass light and had an over emphasized top end. I'm guessing this tube system helped tame them, and IMO for $1600 these are probably the best bargain I've heard so far. Setup in a well dampened room, pulled out about 4 feet from the back walls. I'm looking into a NAD 325BEE, and I'd like to know if it can output enough power to my speakers. My speakers are some vintage AKAI's with 8 ohm impedence and 100Wpeak. I see here: NAD Electronics :: C325BEE Stereo Integrated Amplifier that the NAD 325BEE is rated for 110W power, but only 50W continuously? What does this mean?

Seriously interested in getting pair of ATC SCM20PSL (passive) loudspeakers to replace the Ascend Sierra 2 or KEF LS50. Right now I am using a NAD M32 integrated amp ( up to 180W into 8ohms I think) but since I have plenty of DAC/pres, I could sell that and get a different power amp --- maybe ATC P1/P2 or some other. Any reason I am not going to like it? I like the idea of having detailed and linear speakers. I thought about going for the active 20s but don't want to deal with having heavy speakers on stands unless it would really sound a lot better.
