Speakers

Alright so I'll probably be able to get these beauts sooner than I thought I was eventually going to get one of the "great" 300B amps, either the Frankenstein MKII or Cardinal X2. But for the time being I need a more affordable solution since the speakers will set set me back quite a bit. I've received this design for a 45 amp from a gentleman on SH: I believe as little as 2 watts should be fine with these speakers, but every time I've heard them I recall the 300B blocks putting out 8 watts.

Well, since my living situation will be changing soon, I thought now might be a good time to start contemplating a speaker rig. I'm not sure of the living arrangement yet, but anticipate a typical 2 bedroom apartment for at least a year. My intention would be to use the Opus 21 as source, and the Zana can serve as a preamp. I know very little about speakers/amplification, so given a modest budget of $1000 for speakers/amp, what would you all suggest I look into?

I created a similar thread at Headfi a while ago and I'll paste the links I was offered over there. I'm now much more serious and once again interested in any good reading for room setup and treatments. I'm especially interested in room design and getting the most performance if one is able to start from complete scratch. So a friend I know from work has a spare (I think) pair of these, and his wife is wanting less clutter in their place. (I get that.) He knows I'm into gear and audio and whatnot, and we've been talking for years about stuff. He asked me if I'd be interested in this pair, and we talked about trading something, perhaps. So it looks like I absolutely must get a REL sub to fill out the low low frequencies in my speaker system. The model I am immediately drawn towards is the T1, and I'd prefer to find one used. Does anyone have any suggestions or guidance they would like to offer in regards to these subs? EDIT: See also this thread

Yay - new gear acquisitions to help ease the burdens of life... As to why I bought it... Well I must admit I like to listen fairly loud at night, as I'm all alone for blocks from 12am to 5am. I thought the 35 Watts of the restored Eico HF-87 (cathode biased, quad of EL34) was enough into the 93db/Watt Tannoys, as the sound it yielded was for the most part super-clean. Funny thing I only recently discovered about hard-clipping on these tube amps, though - it sounds a LOT like the light crackling you get from minor flaws on a record. I turned on the amp after about a week and a half of work being done on the house and attached is a short clip of what I heard. Recorded with the iPhone mic about 2 inches away from the driver but its a pretty close representation of the issue. 1. I turned it off after 10 minutes of warm up and it still making the same noise. 2. Turned it on again and let it warm up for 15 minutes. Still the same noise. Biased the tubes. Still the same noise. 3. The noise is equal in both channels from what I can tell. 4. The noise if constant with two different sources. 5. All tubes are lit except for 12ax7s. Waffling context begins... My parents house has two front rooms, one of which has been since year dot the living room, and has the television and sofas and is generally where people sit and veg out or chat or read the paper or whatever. The other front room has been known since I was a little kiddie as "the music room". Well I've owned my Alon Lotus SE speakers for close to a year now and love them. They sounded great in my house in Cali as the room had decent diffusion and not much of an echo. When I loved to PA and set them up in my second story loft they sounded pretty awful. There was a fairly massive echo and no real low bass to speak of. I have used some auralex treatments in the past and they are ok but in this room they just did not do the trick. So after much searching on the web I checked out GIK as there panels are reasonably well made and very fairly priced based on parts cost and minimal labor costs. I moved into my new place last week and the room where my Selah 3D's will be going has hardwood floors. The 3D's currently have rather large metal spikes for feet, and I'm looking to replace them with rubber feet to avoid damaging the hardwood floor. I need some suggestions on rubber feet that screw in and have a recess for 1/4-20 machine screw.

I'm working on a pair of speakers that will be 13.5" high, 7" wide, and 14.75" deep at the base. What sort of rule of thumb do you use when choosing appropriate stands? Well I finally have my Europa's back from repair tonight and before they get shipped off to their new owner on Monday I figured I'd take some time to jot down how they compare to my Tyler Acoustic Linbrook Sigs. When the Europa's were my main speakers probably the biggest factor in wanting to upgrade was a lack of bass. I was able to confirm that lack of bass pretty soon after my comparison began tonight. While the Europa does well with the leading edge of bass notes (for instance bass guitar or kick drums) they fail pretty miserably at having the proper weight behind those instruments. Hey- So I want to enter the world of speakers, and the Quad 22Ls that tkam has for sale have caught my eye. Of course they are visually very attractive, and all the reviews I've read say they are a good neutral speaker at their pricepoint, and even a better deal used. Basically I would just want a speaker that is decent across all genres, and doesn't really try to do anything except portray what is on the recording pretty well. Hey guys, been using some CD cases as speaker stands. I want to find something 8x4x4 or similar....must be at least 8" tall....made from metal or wood...wood would be a plus. Going to hold up 5lbs speakers so it needs to be sturdy...

I'm using a Trends TA-10.1 right now and to me it's kind of bright and metallic without the Opera preamp in front of it. Not a great match for either my speakers or my Sigmas. I'm looking for an amp with balanced sound (can be on the warm side) that's preferably somewhat small and not too expensive, but if it's small and awesome I can swing a little more for it. But not CIAudio D-100 more (if only).

I have a bit of a dilemma with the audio rig at my desk. I had been using a pair of Acoustic Research AR4x's that I pulled out of a dumpster, but with my new monitor there isn't enough room for them to fit properly. I need to get some new bookshelf speakers that are 7" wide or smaller, and don't require a subwoofer crossed over way high to avoid sounding thin. I have no idea what's good on the market right now, which is made even harder to figure out due to the size constraint. So if anybody happens to know some nice speakers that are that small, I'd be very grateful for the advice.

I now have more speaker cabinets than I know what to do with. 4x Yamaha NS-1000s, some 15 years old and decidedly quirky. These served as the fronts and surrounds in my HT system for over 7 years. 2x Unisound AU265s, I'll get around to modding these at some point in a utopian future. 1x B&W CDN-CNT, center channel. Recently upgraded from YG Acoustics Carmels to YG Kipod Signature II speakers. Thought at first the BAT amps didn't have enough power, but it's settling in, and they are great together.

I've been looking around for the best speaker amp under $200. The options I've considered (Teac A1D, Cambridge Audio A5, Panasonic A-35R and Denon PMA-255) are: - Out of stock and nowhere to be found anymore for the Teac - Out of stock and UK available only for the Cambridge Audio, and Denon - Nowhere to be found anymore in the U.S. other than from pick-up in Montana for the Panasonic I keep hearing things about NAD. Are there NAD products that are available in my pricerange?
