Anyone familiar with the quality of sound that these speakers produce. What their cost was when they first hit the market place ? DBX-1A's

Once we get into the new home, I'm officially separating the current speaker rig from the living room TV. I'll need some semi-decent audio solution that meets the following: Either sits completely on a slim shelf or has as small a footprint as possible < $1,000, all-in. This includes any necessary amplification or other source-related stuff to get to the end of the signal. Mostly midrange-centric. I don't need a lot of bass... actually less may be preferred. No intention of adding a subwoofer. Interested in a variety of options. Anyone have great success with a soundbar? How about on-wall? (though I don't really care to mess with proper cable man…

While I'm not typically a fan of single-driver speakers this caught my eye today. I've had really good experiences with Seas Excel series of drivers in the past so who knows this could actually be good.

I'm looking for some decent surrounds and don't want to break the bank. I've read good things about KEF and PSB as overperformers. Any others?

The latest version of the Maggie 1.6 was powered with an ARC tube amp and Conrad Johnson preamp with my North Star M192 (Cary CDP used as transport). First time hearing these speakers I was a bit unimpressed; they were bass light and had an over emphasized top end. I'm guessing this tube system helped tame them, and IMO for $1600 these are probably the best bargain I've heard so far. Setup in a well dampened room, pulled out about 4 feet from the back walls. Handled Opeth and Iron Maiden surprisingly well, something I couldn't say the first time I heard them

So I have a thread going about what speakers I bought. They sound pretty good, but could be better (room conditions, other gear in use). 2009 is going to start off with more audio gear, but I'm not sure where to start. I'll start this by listing the gear I'm currently using. MHDT Constantine+ (coax) -> Onkyo Integrated (pre-out) -> JVC Laboratory M-7050 Power Amp -> AV123 X-Statiks Cabling is just solid core silver from DAC to pre, starquad from pre to power. Hello, I'm thinking about getting a new pair of speakers. I'm currently using a pair of Von Schweiker VR-1 monitors, but I'm moving into a larger space soon and am interested in getting some full size speakers.I'm currently using an April Music Aura Note, which is an excellent source and amp, but is just 50wpc. The room I'll be using them in is 15 x 14. I'd like to spend around $1000 or less, but that may be flexible. I don't have much experience with speakers as I've been a headphone guy in college. Any recommendations? Thanks

My Galantes are sold and I'm going to go for some smaller speakers. Right now I'm between this and Kef iQ3's. The KEF's are a little less with shipping, like $340. Do you guys have any other ideas? I'm trying to stay under $400 for speakers. Amp I'm not so sure, I was thinking of one of the Class D things like Kingrex, Winsome, or Nuforce Icon, or maybe that Glow Audio Amp One that is getting raves.

Does anyone know where to buy rubber surrounds for an 8" woofer? It's a Focal 8k415fhdg. I think it is a version of the Focal 8k415 but tweaked for Hales Design Group. The rubber surround has a hole in it. I have the piece that was torn out and I've toyed with the idea of using adhesive to put it back in place but I would like to replace the whole thing if I can. Hey, TheSloth, did you see that they revamped the Quad site? Looks like they've reintroduced the active series, and they're introducing an upgrade on the L series, the L2 series. I wonder if they're going to do away with the L series? I hope not...

Looks like my long-serving Quads have decided to stop working. I haven’t tried to disassemble the offending one. But there’s definitely been an intermittent issue where it wouldn’t play without power cycling, and that has appeared to turn fatal and now it won’t turn on. I was only able to enjoy these because of the deal I got on them from Todd. So I didn’t know what people have for experience with some of these newer brands/models. I have a pair of Audioengine A2s at work, which needless to say, are several steps below. But with the market flooded with lots of reasonably priced options, does anyone have any recommendations for active monitors? I don’t know that …

Some of you might recall me having some issues with my Cicadas just a short time ago; if not here was my comment from a week/few weeks back: I followed the suggestions that were given to me concerning placement (thanks again fellas), and it does seem to be a little better now, but the low-end in particular still is imbalanced with the left side playing more strongly. PS Audio Elite Integrated stereo amplifier -- $free Polk Audio Monitor Series 2 speakers and sub -- $50 finding out the PS Audio only has stereo outputs, with no sub output -- $d'oh needing a cheap (CHEAP dammit) solution -- $ask head-case Use the PS Audio to drive the sub and get a t-amp for the speakers?

Anyone here know cheap speaker cables with small/skinny spade plugs? My McIntosh 2100 has tiny speaker taps (there's a pic of it around here somewhere) and most spades won't come close to fitting, unfortunately.

Spent some time with these speakers in the same setup that I did the last time I wrote my initial impressions. This time around we listened to his digital rig mostly (CDS3 system). Again I'm left stunned how good speaker playback gets, and how petty and overpriced my headphone system looks. We listened to mostly rock, jazz, blues and classical. First up spun some "modern" Megadeth. Hidden Treasures is one of their 90s EPs that sounds damn good and didn't fall victim to obscene amounts of compression. I have a couple of bookshelf speakers and a small active sub I'm no longer using in my TV system and I'd like to move them to the living room, which is currently wired with Blose courtesy of the house's previous owner. Anyway, I'm thinking a 50W integrated amp would do the trick (speakers are 8 ohm and 88dB sensitive) and I'd like to be cheap -- as it'd just be for occasional ambience or the kids and the main source will probably be an iPod. Do need a sub out. NAD? Cambridge? Arcam? Fire away. Used is fine.

Ok, I'm currently looking at the Audioengine A5s since they're like a combo amp. I don't have a good place to put these speakers so I think I should start small, and get speaker/integrated amps etc after I'm done with these. The main problem is my room(s) don't have a good place for the speakers but that should be fine for now. Reks reccomended the A5s I think so I looked into it. Any ideas? Like should I go for it? or anything else you guys reccomend? I'm trying to stay away from hi-fi speaker systems atm. so anything combo should be good. Hi, Once a year or so I think about getting back into ESLs and even though the prices on vintage Quads seem to be on the increase I'd be interested in the thoughts of members here who have experience with or are interested in classic ESLs from Quad, ML (CLS, CLS II.), SoundLab, etc. I guess my preference would be for a rebuilt ESL-57 or 63 based on the ones I've heard, but I've always wanted to listen to some of its competitors. Any fans here? k

After neglecting my speakers for a while due to my recent electrostat headphone lust, I have put together my speaker rig again after receiving the DIY First Watt F5 amp. My main speakers are actively bi-amped, and I was looking for an extremely resolving amp for tweeter/midrange (Aurum Cantus G3 ribbon/Focal 7K2 midrange) beyond what my tube amps can provide. The F5 is fantabulously beautifully resolved in this range, I must say. BTW. Yes, that is the controversial Storm Audio Pandora DAC, currently used in "Master" mode, slaving my Lynx 2B spdif output from my quiet PC.

Finally got it to work. Of course I have to pull the amp out when I'm actually listening so the cord reaches the outlet, I'm using an ipod as source, and monster speaker cable, but it sounds amazing. I played the theme from shaft and sitting extreme (EXTREME) nearfield it sounded like I was actually sitting next to the hi-hat. The placement is awful obviously, that little green thing in the corner is my bed, which is touching the other side wall. So there is plenty of room for improvement. Eventually I will make stands or something so they can be placed at my desk, but they are just way too heavy (and so is the amp) to be supported by it.
