I'm looking for some decent surrounds and don't want to break the bank. I've read good things about KEF and PSB as overperformers. Any others?

Has anyone had experience with Mirage speakers?

I know, right? Anyway, it's a home-made speaker system based on an Ikea salad bowl, some Pioneer car speakers and some corresponding digital amps. The salad bowl is inverted, drilled holes through, and acts as the enclosure. parts list videos, including construction of the speakers I think it's pretty obvious that I was initially drawn to this because of the music-making-in-linux aspect, but since the speaker is polydirectional, that ended up interesting me, too. Yay - new gear acquisitions to help ease the burdens of life... As to why I bought it... Well I must admit I like to listen fairly loud at night, as I'm all alone for blocks from 12am to 5am. I thought the 35 Watts of the restored Eico HF-87 (cathode biased, quad of EL34) was enough into the 93db/Watt Tannoys, as the sound it yielded was for the most part super-clean. Funny thing I only recently discovered about hard-clipping on these tube amps, though - it sounds a LOT like the light crackling you get from minor flaws on a record. So, when it did clip it was somewhat camouflaged, though I still should of made the connection WAY earlier...yep I still feel pretty stupi…

I turned on the amp after about a week and a half of work being done on the house and attached is a short clip of what I heard. Recorded with the iPhone mic about 2 inches away from the driver but its a pretty close representation of the issue. 1. I turned it off after 10 minutes of warm up and it still making the same noise. 2. Turned it on again and let it warm up for 15 minutes. Still the same noise. Biased the tubes. Still the same noise. 3. The noise is equal in both channels from what I can tell. 4. The noise if constant with two different sources. 5. All tubes are lit except for 12ax7s. With the new tubes, the Rogue has been singing without any noise or static. I don't know what the age of the old tubes was or how many hours they have on them but don't care as it was probably one of them. The speakers and the amp were originally in my parent's home in a 15x21 room so heat was never really a concern. Currently my bedroom is 11x13 and having the amp on most of the day is starting to make the room quite warm. I am probably going to eat the cost of the new tubes and stick the amp on audiogon - as much as I love it, I can't stand the room getting that warm anymore. So I built the Jonokuchi for my office and it's working quite well. It's a very respectable headphone amp and currently I have it driving a small pair of JVC speakers that came from a defunct mini system. But as always, I want MOAR! But there's a counterproductive requirement, which is that they have to be small, really small. The JVC's are about 4" wide, 5" tall and maybe 8" deep. My space can support something slightly larger with width only being able to be pushed about 1" larger, depth is more flexible but probably doesn't need to be. Hi, I am looking for a set of cheap bookshelves/speakers that can take a digital input from my tv. I just got a new gt50 for the main viewing family room which has a decent sound bar. The g25 that was there went upstairs to the living room, and the stock speakers are real bad. Would love to just take the optical out from the tv, plug them in the speakers, and be done with it. I could have swore such a thing exists but I can't seem to find it. Thanks! If such a thing does not exist, i could also do a small box that would fit inside an entertainment furniture, that would be able to take a digital in, be an integrated amp of sorts, which could output into normal speakers…

Well, I'm moving to Houston to start my first job on July 1st. This means I'll finally be able to put together a 2.0 setup to use with my TV. I still haven't decided what will drive the speakers, but I'm toying with the ideas of either getting a decent Onkyo receiver from Amazon or getting an inexpensive integrated amp (NAD, Cambridge 640, Baby Sophia etc...) from A'Gon. My original plan for intro speakers was to just get active ones like the Audioengine A5s. However, I got a good deal on some floorstanding Wharfedales from someone about an hour away and jumped on it. Sadly, when I went to pick them up, he wasn't there to give them to me. Communication error on my part most likely Now that I look at my situation I'm thinking bookshelf speakers are the way to go anyways so... I'm out gas money but that's not a big deal. The question I have now is which route to take...Should I use the integrated amp I have (NAD 320BEE) and get some <$200 bookshelf speakers or go with something like the Audioengine A5s. I'm still in the market for a good, powerful amp. I snoozed on that Bel Canto, and I haven't seen a Musical Fidelity A300CR power amp (not the integrated) in a while when I was liquid (ain't liquid right now). But looking ahead, anyone heard a Pathos amp? It seems to combine power with tube preamplification; so, theoretically, the best of both worlds. Is it? And it needs high frequency extension, that's one thing the MF had in spades -- air. Nice air. Effortless air. And nice extended deep bass. Anyone heard any of the new breed of digital amps with the ICEpower modules? The new Cary, AudioSource, B&O, bunch o' others have that technology. Are they any good?

I rarely do any real critical listening due to the amount of work I have from school so I've been thinking about moving to a small speaker system for a bit. I dont really want to hassle with an amp to go with the speakers since I'll be moving around a lot and living in a small dorm room doesnt give me a lot of space to work with. I've been looking for the Audioengine 5s (just missed a pair of Audioengine 5s for 200 ) and Quad 11Ls on ebay and audiogon. Is there anything else I should keep an eye out for? Max budget is $400 btw

Sound Has anyone tried these out? Seems to be in a price range between the Audioengines and the Quads. With a built in USB DAC and headphone amp, the feature list looks pretty good.

I've been curious about how a radial speaker works and what are its supposed advantages or disadvantages when compared to traditional, forward-firing box speakers. Something about the idea intrigues me, although I've never heard a radial speaker before. More specifically, I'm thinking of about this: http://www.decware.com/newsite/RL15.htm. Interested in this because of its reported synergy with the FirstWatt F1. I was first turned on to Decware through aerius, who posted a link to one of the articles on that site regarding room treatment.

I have been trying out studio monitors for the last few weeks now for my office at the bar. I tried the Dynaudios at $500 each but to me they remind me to much of my home rig and are way to much for my use needed. I tried the Event tr8's and either know the have great freq numbers they just don't make the music come out even enough. I tried a few KR or something brand monitors around $500 pair but they sounded to small and well..Small. I decided on the M-Audio bx8a's for the rear ported even sound and crystal clear range. I have them running Balanced from the Dac1 usb and then on to the laptop using Itunes on a external Hard drive. I have Carpet on the walls of the baseme…

I'm hoping to pick up a pair of A5s soon but due to my desk arrangement I can only handle stands with about a 4 inch rise max. I just noticed these stands on the Audioengine site. Audioengine DS1 Anyone try them out or something similar? I know ideally I should get the speakers up higher but angled like this may be my best option.

With postjack's acquisition of Tkam's Quad 22Ls, it certainly looks like Quad is the FOTM lol. I got my Quad 12L active monitors today, and I am very pleased with the purchase, considering that I got it at half the MSRP. I find them to be very detailed and resolving, which shouldn't be surprising given that they are designed for studio mixing, but they are definitely not harsh. If anything, they have more of a treble roll-off than either my L3000s and K1000s. The midrange is smoooth though, and very pleasing to the ear, and bass has decent impact but is a bit sloppy right now because I'm still using the cardboxes they came with as temporary stands.
