I want to go as paperless as possible at home. Receipts, manuals, invoices--physically storing all that crap is making me nuts. I use sheet fed scanners at work all the time and I love them. But the industrial-strength versions of these things are too expensive. So, based on some initial research, I have identified the following two products: Fujitsu ScanSnap S1500M Scanners | Sheetfed Office Scanners : FUJITSU United States The Neat Company - NeatDesk for Mac Your job is to help me decide on one of the above, or find another competent machine (not a lackey). EDIT: Oh, and it ideally should be Mac-compatible. Go!

So, my wife needs a new laptop. Currently, she (and I) both use Windows-based laptops for home & work, so that is the OS with which she is familiar. However, she has had iPhones since v6 (now on vX 256GB), and also uses an iPad for most casual tasks (web-browsing, e-book reading, etc.). The Windows laptop is used only on-occasion for more mundane tasks. Predominant PC use-cases include iTunes library base/backup, and creating/sharing documents for the local Rotary club (MS Word & Excel files). So, she needs an HD capacity bigger than her phone, as well as the latest Microsoft Office suite. Given her leanings toward other Apple products, she is considerin…

Since it's possible this topic is helpful to someone else, I've decided to start a new thread, instead of posting the question at the venerable Mac thread. I'm about upgrading a mid 2010 13"MBP adding more memory (actually changing both chips for larger ones), replacing the optic drive for a 256 SSD one, and changing the stock HDD for a WD 1TB unit. This MB has become my main computer until I'm sure I really want/need a 27"iMac (mostly a 6 weeks delivery term sucks). Still I'm a OSX rookie and I can't find the folders which should be transferred from this old-to-be system HDD into the new system SSD drive. They're supposed to be in the root user directory but they…

My dad's computer started acting funny this morning. I don't know much about Windows. When he logged back in this morning the following things were missing: His desktop picture, his shortcuts in the taskbar were missing, his programs when you click the start button were gone, and Microsoft office longer seems to be registered. He did have antimalwarebytes delete 2 pups that were in the registry key. We also had someone changing the DSL today but he said he didn't touch the computer. I doubt it was the latter. Do you know what could be the problem and how to fix it? I don't have Windows 7 disks to reinstall everything and also my dad won't let me do that since he…

My Mac is slow as shit, and no I don't know what happened. It is very possible that the Little Monkey pressed some buttons. What can I do to run a checkup or some such shit--other thanDisk Utility--so that this thing gets back to normal?

A new job has me searching for a Mac solution for playing around with music gear. They want to submit some budget numbers tomorrow. Argh! Not really enough time to research shit. I'm torn between a faster Mac laptop than I have and a DIY Linux music server, and just popping for a Mac Pro desktop. I currently have an iTouch, iPad, and entry level MacBook, and a fairly new and fast Dell Windows 7 desktop. My needs are: I've got to be able to play with and evaluate virtually any digital media device. I won't be looking at bad-ass listening room servers (ie Sooloos) or professional audio editing stuff, but may be playing with most anything other hardware and sof…

Anyone have any solutions for the eye fatigue that results from staring at an LCD all day? In the ad from buy.com today, one of the items was a $50 pair of glasses designed for exactly that, that I'm actually seriously considering. Also, there's an overlay that one can put over one's screen. Anyone use any of these things? Are there other options ("go blind" does not count -- I'd rather not) that you prefer?

Last night while attempting to finish some final details on my son's science fair project we discovered that most of the MS Word documents from the past three weeks including ones saved two days ago seem to have disappeared. We performed a virus scan, search of the hard drive and can find no Word documents that have been saved in the past three weeks, whether saved to a folder or saved without designating a folder. Google queries for solutions haven't helped and this seems to be a random problem with no general solution. Has anyone here experienced this problem or is this just more example of my bad audio equipment luck migrating to my home computer?

So I got my Aura Note USB DAC/CDP/Integrated and it sounds great, but whenever I have it plugged into my computer via usb I get alot of noise. I assume it's related to the computer in some way, as more activity (scrolling, opening programs) directly affects the noise. It doesn't even matter if I'm using the usb input or not, I can be playing a cd and the noise will be there unless I unplug the usb cable. What should I do? Would a usb hub or something help? Or maybe a shielded cable? I'd appreciate any suggestions. Also, I've used a few other usb audio devices and never had this problem.

Is there some way to monitor auction sites or forums such that when a particular product went on sale, you would receive an email or would otherwise be notified? For example, let's say I was in the market for another North Star. I could subscribe to the FS forums on HF, HC, etc. and get daily updates. Same with the 'bay. Not sure about the 'gon. But I'm wondering if there is some sort of service or feed or robot or spider or whateverthefuck that would monitor certain sites and notify me asap when something was posted for sale. Is this remotely feasible, or am I just being an assfacehole?

Hi all, So I'm going to jump on the Squeezebox train, and looking for advice on the best way to do it right, from the get-go. Right now, my computer audio situation is languishing in the 90s, as I am a big Sony/ATRAC fanboi. I have a bunch of stuff ripped to Sonicstage which I will most likely keep in the immediate future for portable use only. As for the Squeezebox thing, I want to rip my entire CD collection (350+ last count) into a lossless format and store it on an external HD or NAS/RAID setup. I'll be using a 1 year old Dell desktop, running Windows XP. I plan to hook everything up via ethernet. I suppose my main question concerns library management: Wh…

So... after a lot of talking/yelling at Acer, I finally got the replacement HDD, reinstall discs, and whatnot to fix my 4 month old machine that's been down for 2 months After 4 installs today, some phone calls, and some searching on an iPad, I'm about to just "throw it on the ground." Before I do this, or send it back to them (sigh), I thought I'd see if you guys can help. I haven't been able to load windows. I get this: Windows failed to start. A recent hardware (Toshiba 640GB HDD) or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem: 1. Insert your Windows installation disc and restart your computer. 2. Choose your language settings, and then clic…

I have to get one of these to replace the latest one to die on me. I want something good that will last a couple years at least. For home use, kids and all, and color is a must. Any laser options for all in one? Please give me some ideas. Thank you.

Google's spending some cash these days. I think it's going to be a pretty big deal in terms of IP for Google. They started out the month with around 1000 patents, and once this acquisition goes through, they should have close to 15,000 with another 7500 pending. I think it'll be a boon for Android and should even expand to the living room with the set-top box industry. I figure GoogleTV will be on Comcast boxes in the next few years. **BRENT**

PC w/ XP SP2 (Media Center Edition) 2 GB RAM Fan on previous video card crapped out. I had been using onboard coax out with ASIO4ALL through foobar. New Visiontek ATI Raedon HD 3870 512 video card... With onboard HD sound meant to go through HDMI cable to HDMI ready monitor, receiver or HDTV. Now that my new video card is installed, I'm getting no audio through the onboard digital out. My DAC won't lock on a signal, and as a result, I'm left with no audio here at work. Is it as simple as unistalling the new audio drivers for the video card so it goes back to the onboard sound? Or is there more I need to do?

I no longer feel comfortable traveling with my Logitech Trackman, as that is discontinued and sells for > US$100 on Amazon, much less eBay. And I don't seen an equivalent, although I'll be getting the Logitech wireless thingy to try. So...any recommendations on rugged mice? I want something I can throw in my bag that can endure the abuse I plan on giving it. Especially the buttons. Or should I get a hard clamshell or something to protect it? Not that that will save it from the abuse. I tend to press harder on the buttons or downright bang on them when the computer becomes unresponsive or starts doing something I don't want it to do. Optical or laser? Laser…
