  5. No, I don't have a clean room. I always spray paint my stators and it helps a lot with the noises. Here is my DIY version compares with the real JF.

  6. Tom has a fantastic vinyl collection, and while he may have a DAC or a CDP laying around, he's almost all vinyl. I always enjoyed chilling in the listening room in Atlanta, and would love to make it up to VA. Perhaps one day. **BRENT**

  7. You know, Zach, you don't have to be an asshole. You make me want to go back to not being here. Maybe I should indulge that impulse.

  10. Imbalance problem often comes from a small arc spot on the diaphragm. First, I would open the driver up and check the diaphragm. Most of the time, the arc spot is pretty obvious. You need to check which side of the diaphragm is coated. A simple way to check is to use your finger to lightly rub the diaphragm. The side that is coated will leave a trace when you rub. The arc spot normally only affect the coated side. Since the coating material stays on the surface of the diaphragm, if the spot isn't too large, you can just wipe the spot off using a lint free cloth. When you rub, the coating on the diaphragm recoats itself. That's how I fix my driver. However, if it still doesn't work, then I will recoat the diaphragm. But when I do that I normally recoat the diaphragms on both drivers so that I'll have equal sound.

  14. Their original self-titled album was basically a collection of hit singles... an incredibly accomplished debut. The following albums varied in quality (I'm not sure why so many people like Candy-O – it has a nice jacket cover), but their guitar/synth sound evolved into their penultimate pop album, Heartbeat City, which has a kind of era-defining quality. Nobody will ever accuse the Cars of having deep lyrics or pretentious concept albums like Pink Floyd (who I also like), but I enjoy their stripped-down approach to pop songs. I've always been fascinated by this transition period, when classic rock morphed into post-punk, corporate rock, New Wave, synthpop, hair metal, etc., partly because it was the music of my childhood. Albums like Fleetwood Mac's Tango in the Night or Bad Company's Desolation Angels hold a kind of morbid fascination over me. My next purchase from Mo-Fi will be the Pixies' Trompe Le Monde.

  15. Thanks. I make these headphones to use with Stax compatible amps. The spacer thickness is 0.5 mm and bias voltage is 570V.

  16. I tend to use a brickwall because that's how the music was downsampled anyway (if it wasn't it would cause aliasing) so it's recreating what's on the disc and I like that concept. That said I agree that other filters can help a lot with some of the clipping and transients in some recordings, I even made a couple custom filters myself for Foobar back in the day. The closed form filter thing seems really like marketing to me not arguing that it sounds bad or good because again it can.

  20. I have an arcane high end streamer system based on a Logitech Transporter. To make that work seamlessly takes a bit of work. PC needs to run Logitech Media Server for the Transporter to work. Networking via router - so PC, Transporter and NAS drive (with CD collection ripped using dBPoweramp) all connect to router. And because the interface to the Transporter is naff you use an Apple Tablet running iPeng - which connects to the router wirelessly. iPeng is an Apple-only app - so should also work with an iPhone. I also use Tidal HiFi, and getting that to work with the rest of the system is in itself arcane. And it occasionally forgets somehow, so you have to delete Tidal and reload. Pain in the ass, it most definitely not a plug and play - but sounds stunning when it gets its shit together.

  21. Ayre's take on why apodizing, min-phase, slow roll off filters is where it's at and what they prefer. Should be the same as HQplayer's poly-sinc-shrt-mp. https://www.ayre.com/white_papers/Ayre_MP_White_Paper.pdf

  36. I tried to smoke some spare ribs on Friday but my Traeger is still tripping the GFI breaker every time I use it. That time, it started working rather than tripping immediately so I believed I was under way. When a banged up Claire was dropped off by a neighbor after tripping and falling on a trail run, I realized that the Traeger was off and the GFI was tripped. I put the cold ribs back in the fridge. Today was my first chance to attempt to smoke them again and I could not locate a cheater plug to see if taking the ground out of the equation would work. So I decided to get audiophile on this MF. First, I tried an unused Richard Gray Audio Power Pig to see if it could deal with the issue. That seemed to work but after a few minutes the GFI popped. The next level was remembering that I have a Nirvana Audio Analogue Source power cord that does not have a ground connection. I plugged that in to power the Power Pig and viola! No tripping of the GFI. Good thing I never sell any of this shit. Claire ultimately found a cheater plug so I'm going to try that as a much simpler solution. Beyond that, I'm going to figure out why the Traeger has a ground fault when I'm not trying to cook something. :/

  40. Follow-up visit in Boston for Andrew and his heart condition. Best news possible: "no risk" for cardiac death, not recommending any procedures, and not necessary to follow up unless symptoms get much worse (which is doubtful). MAYBE periodic - annual or even less frequent - EKG's but that's more to see if the condition goes away on its own over time. Resumed our vacation in Southern Maine, Andrew celebrated with a DQ Blizzard and an entire small pizza. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD
