  1. Eleanor and the kids are away, so I've been building a brutal recording desk. All rough 1x6 lumber, logged and milled here on the farm and exposed to the weather for way too long. When I move it downstairs I'll put the keyboard on a tray under the desktop. I think the monitor risers might be too high but aside from that I'm really happy with how it's turning out.

  2. Bought some boxes and packing tape to start the moving process. Fuck I hate moving but it'll be worth it once I get moved in. Lots of room for HCers!

  5. At long last, I cased my KGSSHV - my first foray into Kevin's Wonderful World of DIY ES Headphone Amps. Although its glory has been over-shadowed by the HV Carbon and the Grounded Grid alike, the KGSSHV is really a damned fine sounding amp in its own right to my ears especially when set up to run at higher output current. There are many versions of KGSSHV out there starting from the on-board heatsink version that runs around 5mA output current to the later off-board versions. This one runs at a toasty 15mA and raised VAS current and is powered by the same GRHV/GRLV universal PSU I use also for my Carbon, Blue Hawaii and Grounded Grid.

  9. I love the idea of reusing lumber or furniture for an audio desk. It's always there to remind me that character is important. I design my monitor supports to be lower than I need. Easier to adjust up than down (and I aways dream that bigger monitors are just around the corner).

  12. The last decadent cheesecake brownie from Rustic Bakery. HC approved "crack brownie" technique of microwaving for some seconds so that the brownie is warm and moist, and the chocolate ever so slightly gooey. I'll be in my bunk.

  18. Hah, then it should work perfectly for you, as long as the limited archival aspect is fine. I'm quite fond of it because it's one of the few image sites still around that doesn't try to have the images only available viewing their website. They did change the default behavior to not immediately giving you a link to the image itself and instead preferring the link that shows it on their site (which is still nicer to deal with than most image sites), but you can right click and get image address, or whatever equivalent on mobile, and there's no automatic redirect that tries to prevent that. I get unreasonably mad when I'm trying to look up an image real quick and it's impossible to access without going on the hosting site, covered by more things promoting their site.

  19. The one other thing to know is imgur does process images for lower filesize, so it's not suitable if you want to have jpgs at very high quality settings. 99% of images it isn't noticable, but if it's for high res photography the compression artifacts may become visible.

  20. If it's embedded in a post and for whatever reason that post isn't accessed in enough time (let's assume my 6 months is right), then yes, it'd become a broken/unavailable image. But anyone opening the thread to the page where the post is counts as accessing the photo. I don't know if they have a service to keep images permanently alive regardless of activity, I've only ever used the basic drag'n'drop system I described.

  21. Absolutely, that's how I've always used it. Open imgur.com in a tab, drag photo from computer to browser, wait 5 seconds for it to upload and process, then right click and copy image address to use anywhere I like. No account, no using their own 'ecosystem', etc. I have not checked in a while but I believe it keeps all images alive as long as they've been accessed within 6 months or so, something like that.

  22. Is what you're looking to do outside of imgur's realm? It's been the de facto image hosting site for years now.

  27. The cancellation of that JLC Master Ultra thin Automatic has been done, and the servicing of my JLC manual is back on. Now as I mentioned I'm now going to get a JLC Grande Reverso 2788520 Manual wind, so here are some photos of that watch which I think is very nice looking. I also like it with the black leather strap, so when I have that watch I won't be changing the strap for a JLC SS bracelet like I am with my Master.

  31. Next day follow up after an 18 hour run in. The Eitr has relaxed and the fatiguing edge is gone. Bass has fleshed out and the highs are natural. The clarity and tonality is startling. On quick A-B USB-Toslink input selection comparisons between the Eitr and the AE, the AE now sounds more processed (Velveeta like) and the Eitr has just a more natural "there" there. Not an absolute repeatable endorsement of what others may hear, but only my thoughts relative to the cheap shit alternatives I've tried. I'll be buying the Gen 5 to install in my Yggy when available. Keeping the Eitr to use wth my iPhone at work to stream uncompressed Tidal to my system there.

  33. I've been "sampling" the streaming services since the Airbnb I'm at for 2 months doesn't have a tv. The dsl connection is terrible so I'm getting a good taste of what it's like with the worst connection possible ( how about 12.82Mbps down and .75 up for stone age!). So far, I've just done the free week of Sling blue and now I'm on the $35 plan with DirectTV Now. DirectTV Now is very good so far. Even though they don't have the kind of backlog that's good for binger's like me, the networks allow you to watch their libraries by logging in as a DirectTV Now member. Tomorrow I'll start checking out Vue. BTW, I made the mistake of buying a new piano sample library since it was on sale. The download was about 20G. Thank god the company has a nice download manager since the download got interrupted 3 times.

  34. The Master Ultra thin manual wind does look quite thin, but I love it like that, which is why I've decided to try and cancel that automatic and keep the manual. Now if I'm successful with that cancellation, I'll carry on with having the service done of that manual, and also get a JLC SS bracelet fitted. I was told the service would take around 3 months to complete, so I'll easily have the spare money for that bracelet by then. The place sorting everything out isn't open Sunday's, so I'll contact them Monday morning to hopefully make the cancellation. I'm also now going to get a Grande Reverso Ultra thin manual wind.

  39. I have unexpectedly acquired an absolutely massive desk (9" by 4") for my new office. It is our old dining room table, which is itself now adjudged by the professionals to be too small for the new dining room. Sitting in the middle of this thing with one iMac -- even the big one -- is going to look quite ridiculous. This seems to call for a multi-monitor setup a la Colin but I'm not sure how best to pull that off in the current Mac universe? Or I guess there's a two-chair option -- computing at one end, listening at the other with all the gear on top instead of in a rack? Could fit a pretty big turntable ... What says the collective?
