  1. I could have said that just as easily as you did, and suspect that many other people feel the same way about it. It's like any hobby, I guess. There is that initial phase when you're all into it and spending a ton of time on it. In this particular hobby, that involves a lot of listening, experimenting with all sorts of gear, reading, reading, and more reading, and then eventually you start to think you have something to say, so you start posting, and every now and then you argue with others about things that have acquired a heightened sense of importance in your life... and for no particular reason other than that's how you've been spending your time. Then eventually, you lose interest in most of it, and certainly in the need to argue with others about things that really aren't (or shouldn't be) all that important in your life. So if it's headphones, you can say, "I thought they were good, you should give them a listen..." or if it's scotch, "I sure like it, you might want to add it to your list..." and then get on with things that actually do matter. Which, no doubt, is some new hobby that you now think matters, for some reason. At least if you're like most of the rest of us.

  2. I finally have a simple "ish" solution for the controller on the digital attenuator. I developed two boards. The first is a RK50 to Stepped Attenuator adapter board. It is the same size as the Stepped Attenuator board and will fit into an RK50 pinned board. The second is a controller board that supports a motorized POT with IR similar in function to AMB's controller, but as a smaller module with no built in display. A display could be added via the headers (I2C or SPI). It has an ATMEGA328P similar to the Arduino UNO or mini pro. The board is 1" x 2.5" and extends about a half an inch past the motorized POT. It can be programed via a programmer or via the FTDI USB boards. I need to double check everything, but I'll put an order in soon and test to make sure everything works ok.

  3. just use a resistor in line. No reason to try seeing if and when it will burn out.

  9. or a simple circuit with a trimmer/transistor and a couple of resistors and you can dial in the brightness...not much to it...

  10. The design is "unique" and the price is utterly nuts. Hifiman build quality at 50k$? Yeah...no thanks.

  11. Started it way earlier than planned! Up at 2:30 am -- insomnia is back after a welcome absence of a few years. It's even evolved a resistance to the most potent known traditional remedy, back copies of The Economist. [emoji37]

  15. The vertical work great with 2mm thick boards. The R/A ones just barely fit. I probably would add a bit of adhesive to make it extra secure.

  16. Tyll is the last person I'd accuse of selling out. He's one of the few reviewers I read and listen to. Having said that, I often don't hear things the way he does. But that's fine. Use honest, educated opinions like Tyll's, use your own ears, use whatever metrics and science you know, and put all of that together to guess if something is for you or not. Changing your mind in this hobby is a pain in the ass. The internet remembers everything you say and nobody realizes that the situation in the real world always changes. So if you say A and a few years later you say B, people will assume you either sold out or have no idea what you're talking about, when in truth you're just being honest about things as you see them at the moment. It's one of the reasons why I don't post about headphones much anymore. But then again I have nothing to post anyway, though 10 years ago, that didn't stop me.

  17. We returned from SC last night. Some downed limbs, one shingle and nothing more. We had power when we returned and according to the NAS, we only lost power for 18 hours. The upside to that is Karen decided we absolutely need a propane grill .

  18. I bought the black Delrin one on ebay from knoberik and haven't had a chance to put it in an amp but it looks good quality and Stax headphones plug in fine. It looks like the same guy is making the teflon one... not sure why he made a different account.

  21. i was saving up some money to buy a new dynamic headphone amp, as i've been without one after my old head-direct hf5 died on me, but then this beauty showed up, and all my plans were thrown out the window. guess i'll have to survive using my floats off my stereo amp a few more years. i didn't want to go all the way to the attic and look for my ortho-collection anyway.

  22. I finally got the last plate machined. I had to replace the spindle on my CNC and also made a mistake on the CAD so had to redo this plate, but it's looking great now.

  23. The first Valhalla cable I bought gave most for my money in my system. The 2nd Valhalla gave me more. The more Valhalla I added the bigger the improvements got because less weaknesses were left. The last Valhalla power cord I added gave the biggest improvement because it removed the biggest weakness that was left.
