Grok Headphones in Fullness

  1. Started by chinsettawong,

A pair of HE60 was given to me by a Thai friend. The phones must have been in storage for a long time as the vinyl on the ear pads come flaky off. So, I have to disassemble and clean the interior. Taking this opportunity, I take a few pictures. The diaphragm to stator distance is around 0.5 mm. There is nothing special on the stator surface. Does anyone know the dimensions of the new Grado box? GRADO Wooden Box

  3. Regarding the K701, well, I happen to own them. What might be regarded as interesting is that I use them to listen to EDM FM recordings (weekly). The resolution, plasticity, definition, tightness, nuances and the overall quality of the bass (if the bass is there in the recording, and it is very recording dependent - and recording are made by humans) the way it hits is, on the headphone amp I am using, with somewhat good source - breathtaking. Senn HD600 have different qualities, and are more of a blunt tool so to speak, in comparison, although very often put in the same box together with the AKG K701. Often neglected in reviews and opinions is how are these…

When it rains it pours... I did a potentially stupid thing yesterday (took off the cover/earpad on the HD580 while music was playing) and now there seems to be some distortion* on the left side. It is definitely the headphones (I have switched out the amp/dac). Could this be anything more than getting some fuzz hair on the driver - I don't see anything obvious with the naked eye - or could there be some other damage since the driver was being used when I removed the cover? If there is some dust or hair, how do I get it off, especially if it is not obvious where it is? *I think it is distortion. When playing low bass, it buzzes a bit like really cheap speakers …

  5. Hello, I recently purchased a pair of Shure SE215 online and they came in this box: http://s90.photobucket.com/user/ofey_s/media/Shure/SE215-01.jpg.html From what I have read this version is the "international" version. If I am correct this is the U.S box: https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/G/01/musical-instruments/detail-page/Amazon_SE215-CL_img10_lg.jpg Is this a problem for me as I am based in the United States? And is there a difference in the manufacturing?

  6. The price is not yet a problem so I have no price range restriction, although I don't want something over 1000$... if you know what I mean. I want my headphones to be completely wireless (no wire, no usb dungle, no dock station). I want to be able to lay in my bed or walk into the house without the laptop with me (especially for Google/Skype Phone Calls) (this let me conclude that any IR (infra red) wouldn't be suitable since they require the headphones to be in sight of the IR signal transmitter to communicate. I will be using these both for phone call and listening to music as long as playing so games (so It requires a Mic for the phones calls and must have some decent …

Anyone tried the L700 with any of the KGSSHV/KGST/BHSE amps? Wonder if it will sound moar awesome as compared to just driving them with a Stax amp..

  8. Started by Deadneddz,

Thanks to the Craigslist ad Collin posted I got a super deal on a pair of HE60's that I couldn't pass up. Met up with the guy locally and the transaction went super smooth. It was interesting, I asked him why he wanted to sell them, and he said that he has a pair of Stax Lambdas (didn't ask what model) and that his older brother whom he got this HE60 from actually owns 3 more. So he had 4 HE60s at one point! When he said this I immediately wondered how many HE60s were made in the first place. Poor sap said he never heard the HE60 from any other amp other than the HEV70. The phones came in the condition that it was described. From my inspection this pair seems to be i…

  9. So I've been looking for a solid pair of earphones (under $100), not in-ear phones (they feel like Q-tips to me), and not headphones....just something like those earphones that come with your Ipod but sound much better. Now I can obviously see why stores won't let you test them, because who'd want to wear a pair that's been in 100's of people's ears? That being said I come to you, and look for some advice on a good pair you'd recommend. Quick info: • I listen to a lot of classic rock/ballads, not sure if this helps recommend a pair? • I am not a fan of bass, the whole thump-thump sounds people obsess over isn't something I care for much. I like the sounds t…

Hi guys, I've got an AKG K1000 at Alex. I bought it second hand from HeadFi, but unfortunatelt one of the drivers is not working properly. So I'll need to find a new pair of drivers! Any idea whether AKG can still provide them? I've tried mailing them, no response yet. I'll give them a call later this week, but if you guys can confirm they don't have it in stock anymore, I won't bother and save the telephone costs (I live in the Netherlands). One other guy at AKG told me I would need new printed boards as well, if I own an older system. Anyone heard about this?? Thanks for the help, guys! PS: Talked to Craig and he's working on a hybrid class a amp for the K1…

Hello, Just picked up a set of HD600's. Did a solid hour long listening session comparing them to HD650's off an obnoxious $4500 McIntosh something or other CD player (just to be on the safe side, lol) at my local stereo shop.. Money no object, greatly preferred the 600's. Felt like the 650 simply added a driver with a bigger motor and some supporting mods, giving it more presence but overly so, making the finer details of the 600's appear warmed over. I will be predominately listening to classical, which was the genre where the major differences really made themselves known in my demo session. Felt like the 650's were more a money grab than anything else....anyway…

link On-ear. (Largely) closed. (Largely) black. Leather (& aluminum). Detachable, non-microphonic cord with mic and remote for, e.g., Apple products. Not electrostatic. $300. No, I'm not getting them, I have enough headphones, I'm not getting them, I have enough headphones, I'm not getting them, I have enough headphones, I'm not getting them, I have enough headphones... But, dang, I'm curious.

  14. I am thinking of getting another pair of AKG K271 again. I used to own them and mostly liked them. I think I remember that they were not quite as smooth as I would have liked in the treble and many a tiny bit lacking in bass but overall them were pretty neutral and very comfortable. Is there another pair of closed (full sized, comfortable) headphones that I should look at? I have the a pair of Thunderpants but don't love them and would like something more neutral. I have a couple of supra-aural cans (Sennheiser Momentum and Audio Technica ESW9) and I am not interested in those. I guess I also have a pair of Audio Technica ATH-900ltd that I let Tim use. I also …

  15. I've just been through about 2 days of searching high and low for a pair of nice headphones, i'm seeing sparkles around my head right now due to the HUGE amount of infos all over the net and the Vast numbers of reviews leaning either way on pretty much every single pair of cans I look at... Hence posting here is like a cry for help, last resort kind of thing for me. Would really appreciate any suggestions/opinions/directions you could offer! I'll get right into what I'm looking for: Used for: Mostly on the Computer (Music, Movies and Gaming) as well as PS3 gaming, maybe ipod(at home) Main use is at home, so portability is not an issue. I have the ME2i for my on th…

  18. Headphone in–the-head localization effect cause: sound doesn’t have the couple/affect with the ear and the human upper torso then direct enter the ear channel, the factors for human brain to locate sound source are missing. Solution: supplement the missing factors. I used DSP to handle a music section: the first 10 seconds are intact, then 10 seconds have processed… repeat and cycle for easier comparison. This music section is just for in ear headphone type like AKG3003. Please feel free to comment, I will be very appreciate! 19. Hey yall im new to this forum but i have started to become and audiophile through the years (ever since i started listening to music (im 17 now) and i already own a pair of etymotyc reaserch ER-6i's and i really enjoy them for on the go. but i would like something for home, ive been looking through headphone.com but idk what to get im looking for a nice true bass, crisp mids, decent highs, can be noise cancelling but doesnt have to be. and all under 200$ (250$ okay but pushing it) also i have looked at some desktop/portable amps for my computer and ipod you can give suggestions for this but keep it around 150$(as i do not have a stereo system) any ideas??

  20. This is probably not the appropriate topic as it's not a picture of my rig, but I didn't want to create a separate thread for this... and it's a picture of a headphone after all. What is you guys' opinion on this, aesthetics alone? I'm a (soon to be) designer and this is my graduation project – the first prototype is going to be built soon. It's more of a mass market product rather than an audiophile oriented thing though, so take that as you will.

  21. Started by tkam,

Well my pair of gs1000s arrived today. One of my largest complaints with Grados has always been comfort or for me total lack of comfort. I don't think I've ever been able wear Grados before without my ears starting to hurt after an hour. The GS-1000's solve this problem and are the first Grados I've been able to wear for extended periods of time without any discomfort. So for me the comfort is a big plus, I wonder what took them so long but at least they figured it out. Few observations about their sound so far... Soundstage is big for Grados I'm not convinced its that big compared to other headphones though. I think what might be giving people that impression is th…

  22. Started by Dreadhead,

Today I finally made my fake ear (block of modeling foam with a hole) for my measurement microphone and hooked it up to my digital equalizer. It's bloody cool, you put the heaphones on the ear and run the auto eq (automatic algorithm using pink noise and a RTA) and you've got pitch flat response I know for a fact it would drive many nuts but to be honest I'm having a great time. The only boring thing is that it makes d5000s sound like sa5000s or whatever sound like whatever (as long as both are equalized). Anyway I look forward to trying this out with other phones too. It'll be interesting to see how much correction is required. For the d5000 it's a lot down low an…

  23. Hi folks, I'm new here. I was wondering if anyone had good advice on a portable phone that is resilient in artic temps? I'm in Canada, use an iPod and want something better than the iduds, but the phones have to fit under my toque, so KSC 35's and anything larger are out. I own Ety 4p's but I can't have the isolation while walking.

Hi was wondering if anyone can give me some advice? I have a pair of Stax Gamma Pro and SRD7SB that I have had for many years, but have not used them for a long time as the thin diaphrams of the Gammas Developed holes in many years ago reducing the volume and freqency response (I had a look inside). Also the headband if broken. I have recently found out after after all these years doing some research that this was the wrong type of adaptor for these Gamma Pros, - the SRD7SB being a "NORMAL" type 6 pin adapter and the Gamma Pros being a "PRO" type 5 pin connection which require different bias voltages. The shop that originally sold the adaptor and headphones to my D…

  25. Hi Everyone I am a new guy to electrostatic headphone world. I have just bought a stax headphone. However, I hear some hum noise on one of my driver. I wonder whether there is something wrong with the headphone or not. I did some research and noticed that we will hear hum noise for all electrostatic headphone during winter time or cold weather.
