a headphone that handles brutal, percussive death metal with ease, in addition to not sounding cramped whilst playing symphonies. it sucks that two of my favorite types of music are totally diametrically opposed, from a sonic standpoint. the headphone needs to: - handle pounding double-bass, extremely distorted electric guitar, guttural vocals & thick, accented basslines.. lots of bass impact without getting muddy - not be bright and sibilant on poorly recorded black metal with lots of tape hiss - have a decently sized soundstage to handle large-ensemble symphonies and other types of classical music: such as beethoven, ives, schumann, wagner, gorecki, et cetera..…

So I read through EdipisReks' thread here, but I have already brought back one thread from the dead and decided better of it this time. So here is a new thread. Just got the MB Quart QP55x's yesterday. Got them through eBay for $45 shipped. Brand new, unopened box. I mainly got them for the velour pads to put on my Sextett's. Anyway, currently I have been listening to them and so far I am impressed. Build Decent quality, not as high quality as AKG or Senn's; but they should hold up to plenty of abuse. All plastic and retro looking. I won't say that they look "cool", but c'mon does that really matter anyway. The cord is higher quality than any Rat Shack cord, but n…

No doubt there will be plenty of announcements at CES 2012 of interest to us, so I thought I'd start a thread to keep track of the headphones announced at the show . Who knows, maybe we can encourage Tyll, or other visitors to get a closer look for us. I'll start off with something interesting (thanks to google translate) Sennheiser introduces the high-end HD 700 Headphones google webcache of (pulled) B&H had it priced @ $999.95

http://www.headphile.com/page20.html Looks cool, though I don't totally get it. Are the drivers supposed to be swappable or something? Or is it more of a CD3000 hybrid type deal, but with heavily modded beyers? Seems cool either way. And the Cherry Bomb description confuses me a bit, are they grados with fully custom wood enclosures and modular cable?

  8. Started by HiWire,

Great review of these closed headphones, Tyll. I was looking for exactly this kind of can for years, but I ended up with the Alessandro MS-1 (no regrets) because of the compromises in various products. There are so many posts asking (with different wordings): "what is the best closed portable headphone for me?" online, including this forum. Sennheiser, Audio-Technica, AKG, Beyerdynamic, etc. (this is before Shure and Denon came out with their new cans) all failed to meet my standards when I was shopping around. I wasn't a fan of IEMs (many people have an aversion to this style of headphone), although I did get a pair of Klipsch S4i for my iPod Shuffle 3G this Spring. T…

  9. Just in case anyone here still listens to headphones. The Marketing The Review No USB-C audio? am dissapoint. An apple airpod max pro 2 ultra or whatever they are called rival? Well, it has the premium pricing, vs the XM6 (relatively) pleb version.

  10. Started by Nanoha,

So I was thinking we could create some sort of synergy list. Basically, combos that work well? There are a few threads on Head-Fi of "ultimate rigs", but how about a list that also includes non-ultimate gear. Haha. Or generalizations (for example, the A-T woodies work well with blah blah). Of course, everyone's opinion is different so basically your list reflects your own opinion, and this compilation will be for fun. Medium-class rigs could also be noted. So for an example, devwild and a number of other members like the SA5K with the M^3 even though this setup isn't as high-end as a SDS XLR and HD650. The focus is synergy so this isn't necessarily limited to the highest…

Now available at HeadRoom: http://www.headphone.com/products/headphones/earpad/beyerdynamic-dt-235-black.php I never heard the 231, but I did like the 250-250. I'll be interested to read some impressions as this could be a nice bang-for-the-buck or gift can.

  12. Man, that ringing still won't go away. It's not bad, fairly low level, but it's persistant. Went to see the doctor and told him I got some new headphones; he said "Oh, what kind?" As soon as I said Sennheiser, he got this look on his face, and it wasn't good. "You get them out, turn them up a bit, hey they aren't distorting, let's turn them up, they sound so good, so up, and up, and up." Apparently these things are popular with his clientele... Hollywood types. This would be just my luck... ten years standing in front of LOUD amps at gigs with the volume up so loud it shook the building. Years with the car radio so loud you could hear it down the street. One week with…

  13. Today, I had an opportunity to listen to the new Stax flagship prototype (referred as C32 below) at Fujiva Avic store in Tokyo. They had it for demo during the holidays and I took the opportunity to spend about 1 hour and a half switching back and forth between the C32 and the current Omega 2 (referred as 007A below). The background to this headphone was discussed here ( http://www.head-case.org/forums/headphones/8990-holy-crap-new-stax-omega-looks-fierce.html ). For me, it is the second time I have a chance to listen to the C32, see here for the previous encounter ( http://www.head-case.org/forums/headphones/8990-holy-crap-new-stax-omega-looks-fierce-2.html#post400121…

  14. Started by spritzer,

I’m going to post this in its own thread as so many people are asking me for X9000 impressions, and it makes sense to have them somewhere where they are easy to find. I was also going to take some pictures to add to this review but I’m just wiped. Might add some later if these ever present storms let up for some good light. I’ve now had the SR-X9000 here for over a week so time for a writeup... as my email inbox is full of people asking for just that. 🙂 First impressions were very promising, the build quality is superb, and those drivers are just a marvel to behold. I do like the new replaceable cables even, though it is a bit of a copy of the King Sound set…

  15. To the best of my knowledge, first hand and from other fellow users, it seems that some headphones benefit more from going into a balance configuration than others. I thought it could be helpfull to have a thread where we can cross-reference personal experience with cans that you have had the chance to seriously evaluate in single ended mode and also in balanced mode. The ease of cable switching in the Sennheiser makes them an ideal cable rolling headphone. Should we bother to try to balance a specific headphone? This is were your input becomes valuable. I just asked whether it makes a similar difference in sound to balace the HD600 vs balance HD650. From the res…

Basically i got this huge wad of cash, and i need your advice on how to spend it. I don't want to do anything too silly. I was thinking of getting a few happy meals at mcdonalds... then maybe spluring the change on pennies i can throw out the window of my car. I was thinking also, maybe i can pickup an airhorn. I can use it inapropriate times (ex funerals, in the bathroom at my office when some guy is in the can). You guys think i should get a source? What kind of source can i get for that kinda scratch???

  18. Started by Tony,

Hi guys. I'm looking for an upgrade and have grown interested in the ATH ESW9. They are the only portable can I would carry around, due to the good looks, small size and supposedly good sound quality. What I would like to know is if they are as good, if not better, than Triple.fi 10 Pro. Prices are comparable. Has anyone heard both (maybe Vicki, at the meet with MrArroyo and Volron)?

  19. Well after one to many "nice warnings" about what i want my Dj to do at my place it seems i need to give him a night off to let him know whats up. i have done this dj crap for a few years strait so i am confident in which i can easily do the job, then again we are talking about someone playing off his imac from itunes most of his paid time.. My gear of choice is going to be the Numark idj2 mostly cause i have somuch music already done in lossless on my ipod now (thanks to Benchmark for proving the capabilities of a computer setup). of course i am converting all my lossless files into 128 mp3s cause the idj2 does not play lossless and plus the 128's are going to be used…

  20. I am a fairly new owner of Stax (about two months) and am very happy with my Lambda Pro. I also have a plain Lambda but haven't used it much yet. As some of you may know, I have been doing some renovations on the Pros, such as making DIY leather ear pads (really, just covering the stock earpads) with leather. This worked quite well. I am turning my attention to other things. Both pairs of headphones arrived without the dust covers. I've found some threads here that debate what material, or whether to even use them. Another fair target for my "upgrade everything possible to leather" has been the headband. I did this, but the results were quite disappointing. …

  21. Started by shellylh,

Tyll seems to like them a whole lot. http://www.innerfidelity.com/content/i-love-these-headphonesthe-nad-viso-hp50 Color me interested. I suppose nobody else around here has heard them though. Some people say that are more open and brighter than the Momentum which would be nice.

  22. Started by thrice,

Interesting news from AKG. So I recently recabled my K1000 (did a damn fine job at it if I do say so myself). I was comparing them to Hirsch's Stefan Art hardwire K1000 and we noticed a decided shift in tonal balance. His had significantly more treble emphasis than mine (a little more detail and impact as well). So I thought 2 things...cable and age? I tried re-recabling them and got a little more treble but not like Hirsch's. So off to AKG they go because I thought maybe I fucked something up in the recable (unlikely as I was very careful, but possible). Well, the AKG rep told me that I did a fine job.....so good, he was very impressed, especially since he's rec…

  23. I love to listen to popular jazz, particular to acoustic guitar (Earl Klugh is the man), and classical music (non rock). I have a pocketamp2 headamp which I like, usually I use it with my Grado SR60. I am considering another headphone, AKG, Senneheiser etc. But my budget is <$101. Can someone suggest a model, and perhaps where to get it. HD515 so far seems likely and will have to watch when they go onsale somewhere. gychang

  24. Started by STEAXAUCE,

I posted this on head-fi, too, since so far as I know these haven't been discussed over there by anyone who's heard them, but, you know, I'd prefer to have a discussion about them here. I haven't seen many posts about the SRH750DJ, but I bought them just a few days ago. They're really fantastic for the money. A little background: I recently sold my Edition 9 and will likely be ordering a JH13 or JH16 within a month or two. In the interim, I was planning to rely on my HD25s, but my car was broken into a month or so ago and the headphones were stolen along with my GPS. I wasn't going to buy a pair of headphones for just a few months of use, but I did want have a backup…

  25. Started by blessingx,

Assume there's gonna be plenty of talk when these are eventually released so figured I'd start a thread as there's new info today. They finally have a price, $1,099 & $699, and order date (at least for the PM-1) of mid-April. http://www.oppodigital.com/headphones-pm-1/ http://www.oppodigital.com/future/ "In addition to the OPPO PM-1, we will also release an OPPO PM-2 model which will be a more affordable version of the premium OPPO PM-1. The OPPO PM-2 will have very similar performance while reducing costs to the customer. It utilizes the same planar magnetic driver, the same acoustic design principles and tuning techniques, the same tight tolerances for quality…
