Portable Audio

Headcases Outside? The Horror... The Horror...

  1. Anyone know if there is a portable player akin to ipod that does Flac Disc Images? Or regular disc images? Or APE disc images? Thanks.

  2. I guess its a 'transportable' question than portable, but was wondering how some of you (if you do) carry a decent USB outboard adapter / soundcard with a notebook without having to effectively set out your stall each time you fish it out. Maybe even a proper docking arrangement? Just looking for ideas. I occasionally carry e.g. the Babyface for site recordings but also more rarely for listening on the (semi) move - and while the Babyface comes with a pouch, I was wondering if there was a more elegant way to quickly snap on a quality audio outboard to a notebook that doesn't result in a jumble of cables or having to juggle many boxes, even if just for listening purpos…

Folks, Looking for a DAC for my laptop. A/C powered is ok. Built in head amp, but I might get a mini3 later. Looking at the E-MU 0404 usb 2.0 for about $160 shipped. Any other ones in that price range that I should consider? Pete

No, I don't mean concerts, I actually do mean recording stuff "in the field" -- I heard a really cool sound last night, and I didn't think of my iPhone (duh!), but even if I did, I want to get serious about this. I want to have access to a quality portable digital recorder at all times (I.E. if not actually with me, then with me as much as my iPod is). So, I realize this is not the best place to ask, so the question is mostly -- where should I go to ask this? Harmony Central? Any place else? I can't remember the music makers and producers forum that I used to frequent -- gear-freaks or something like that? Here are my choices so far, that I can figure: Tascam…

Hi guys, I need help with buying IEM headphones. I was looking for Shure's Se310 and then I saw some positive reviews for Ultimate Ears Super.fi 5EB and Ultimate Ears Super.fi 5Pro. I mainly listen to electronic and hiphop music. What would you prefer between these ones? If you suggest any other model, I will gladly listen to other suggestions. Sorry guys, I'm a newbie and I don't want to spend (max 200$) for a crap IEM's if you understand me. Thank you for your help in advance

I need to replace my broken iPod and I'm not sure whether to get an iPod Classic or Zune 120GB. From what I hear the new Zunes are pretty good and the syncing software is not an embarrassment any longer. The problem is that I don't know anybody that acutally has one. Have any of you had a chance to monkey around with one? I like ipods but the headphone jack seems to be a weak point, my past two classics have broke pretty quick and on the last one apple refused to fix it. What do you guys think?

  7. I was set on a set of hd800's but I'm thinking a set of customs would be a more versatile option. I owned the 13's before and sounded nice but the fit was OK and ended up selling them. Planning on using it as a primary phone from the dsha 0 as well as iPhone. Budget is about $1000, it's been awhile since I've really been into the whole IEM thing so not really sure what people are using nowadays.

  8. Makes you wonder if they're really worth a shit... Or if perhaps they're the IEM equivalent of the latest and greatest overpriced Ultrasones... and that some numbskull who doesn't know crap about headphones (IEMs in this case) simply chose to rave on like mad about them because he figures high price = great sound. http://www.avguide.com/blog/the-best-earphones-youll-hearone-day?utm_campaign=Weekly+Email&utm_medium=email&utm_source=email-270&utm_content=Surround+Speakers+from+MartinLogan,+Paradigm,+and+Wharfedale+ Any "review" that makes absolutely no reference to any other comparative products is pretty useless. It just demonstrates the reviewer's la…

Bonnie has taken an interest in the iPod Shuffle that I bought a few months back when they were discontinuing the nice one that had a built-in volume control. I left it on her desk and she has started using it. This is the first glimmer of interest she's ever shown in anything headphone. She's fascinated by speaker rigs (especially those that we can't afford) but thus far she's been bored by headphones if she notices them at all. So... I want this Shuffle thing to go well. Early reports are the the Apple earbuds sound like shit (expected) and fall out of her ears at the gym. Recommendations anyone? We would be looking for something small, inexpensive and decent-…

  10. The right channel went out on my ipod after only a few months so I sent it into apple. They said that the damage was caused by accident damage or abuse. I don't believe that I handled it in any neglectful way or there was accidental damage. Has anybody tried to force apple to honor a warranty after they have tried to deny a repair?

I don't understand portable audio. Excellent sound quality will never come out of a portable DAC no matter how much red wine you pour on it (or drink for that matter). I understand the greater public at large being obsessed with their iToys, but I don't understand why the audiophile community continues to rant and rave about their hornets and tomahawks and all that bullshit. I swear, every other fucking post at Head-Fi is "omg my fucking tomahawk arrived its so awesome out of my new nano lol sonic excellence yay". I'm definitely no expert on audio, but I think I know enough to know that you will not get great sound out of a portable player running mp3's with a subpar DAC.…

"Due to designer decision the XJ03 ( as well as all the new portable products ) is available only in electric blu anodized aluminum body, with engraved graphics and silver color panels." Can anyone explain why? Why it has to be blue? Same goes to the IEM....... And Sovkiller is no longer with them.....interesting

Sony announced a new MP3 player (or DAP): https://musicphotolife.com/2022/05/sony-wm1zm2-review-digital-audio-player-walkman/ It's breathtakingly expensive, that's for sure. I was thinking of getting the Mojo 2, so if this thing sounds better, maybe it's better to have everything in a Sony money box. Also available in gold if you're so money: https://www.sony.ca/en/electronics/walkman/nw-wm1zm2 In other news, the new Sony money cans may not be as good as the old money cans – ain't nothing like old money: https://www.laptopmag.com/reviews/sony-wh-1000xm5

I have a 5 gen 60gb ipod that I've been using for a while. I dropped the ipod yesterday and it kind of broke on me. The audio outputs works but the screen outputs weirdly. I've dropped my ipod many times but this is the first time this has happened. When I press buttons or have any inputs (change volume), right bars on the screen move up and down. I was wondering if you guys would know if this could be fixed with a new screen or if it is a bigger issue.

Is it possible to find a high quality PCDP these days. Not concerned with anti-shock (will be used for desktop) or FM tuner. Mainly concerned with build quality, AC capable, and SQ out of lineout. Checked ebay and there are some older players, but can't find any info on them. All the new stuff that I have found seems to be nothing but shit.

So, one of my clients is leaving to do a bicycle rce in th Alps on Friday, and knowing that I'm a bit of an audio nerd he had asked me if I can source him some good earphones for the trip. Thing is he can't be TOO isolated as he needs to hear traffic/etc, so he can be aware of what's going on around him. He's reasonably picky about sound... but source will be straight from a 160gb iPod to put things in perspective. His ear cavities are pretty small so for example a small UE tip isolates him too much for bicycling. Price is absolutely no object but fast availability is... any ideas? Thanks!

So I got this nice little black nano 8g for $50 when I bought my computer one month before the new ones came out. I haven't really used it, and probably won't much, if ever, but I've been looking at cases, or maybe a skin, and I don't want to bulky it up, but maybe provide some protection (mostly for scratches; not worried about other). I hate the look of those silicon things, and well, so far everything else. I like the small sleek look it has, especially if I ever decide to pair it with my pico when it arrives. I've done searches elsewhere and get too much information to choose from, get annoyed, and stop. Any ideas?

As a user of an 8GB Clip, I find them to be quite excellent in spound quality and convenience. The only thing I could wish for is higher capacity memory. It appears this new Clip resolves that wish with the inclusion of a MicroSDHC slot, allowing up to 16GB cards, which fully integrate into the main menu. If they ared compatible with the MicroSDXC format of memory cards, that would mean up to...eventually...64GB of storage. 23. Hey everybody, I obsess over music, yet I know very little about the mechanics of amps, headphones, etc. However, I believe I have narrowed the headphones down to a pair of Senn HD 595's. They seem to be popular among the audio community. My real problem is deciphering between all the amps! Here is what I am contemplating between(by the way, i'm on a budget--college kid): 1) JDS Cmoy/BSG Cmoy- I have read pretty solid reviews about these, and I like the price point 2) Neco Soundlab Cmoy- It is a little more expensive, but the reviews seemed to be fantastic. 3) Mini3- This was even more expensive, but I hear this amp gives more advanced amps a run for their money. 4…

I am selling my ipod classic 160gb on ebay as we speak and I want a new music player that isnt so large. for real portability I want something small and light but some fairly decent hardware under the hood that can really take advantage of my moda vibes or my soon to own yuin pk1s. also i might use the pico with it when i own the pico next year. I would need at least 6gb space. also I have been encoding using apple lossless however I dont know if other players can play them. I doubt it. that would likely force me to encode with another lossless compression method wouldnt it? god that would suck ughh but gotta do what you gotta do I suppose...

  25. Seems like such an obvious thing, but Claire wants to download her new Wilco music onto her iPhone and listen to it. Post iTunes and on the streaming era I'm not sure what she should do.
