Speakers

I have a friend who is looking for good active monitors, under $400 or so, and mostly used in a near-field/desktop setup. Coming more from the pro audio (mixing and post-production) side than the audiophile side, so as flat a frequency response as possible would be nice. Any recommendations? Thanks in advance. In case anyone cares, I'll also be sending along my modded Fostex T20v2 and T40v1 to this friend on indefinite loan to see if they're up to the task of being good studio headphones. I'm sad to say that I really don't listen to headphones very much, anymore, otherwise you'd have to pry the T40 off my cold, dead hands.

Yeah! I just scored this Omega Super 8 Alnico (formerly SuperHemp, but with new drivers), which is on its way to me (seller's photo). Will be driving with my Almarro A205AmkII and various sources. Have had good experience with Omega Super 5, so I splurged.

As part of the renovation of my house, I moved some the cabinets in my kitchen, and there's no longer room for the hutch on my computer desk. Said hutch has held my ancient-but-beloved EV Sentry studio monitors for years. I can't set the EVs on the desk because they're not magnetically shielded in the slightest. I'm in the market for some replacements, cost $500-1,500. That's a big range I realize, but house repairs have uh, complicated my financial situation, and I'm unsure how much I'll be able to spend. I have a rather cramped situation that requires somewhat creative furniture placement, by using a single room as a bedroom, electronic workshop, and listening room. As it is now, things are fairly good and the speakers (Maggie 1.6) sound wonderful. However I want to build a new workbench that is significantly larger, and it would require getting rid of a set of shelves and making the room too cramped, or rearranging furniture to make better use of the middle of the room rather than everything against the wall. I have a bit of a dilemma with the audio rig at my desk. I had been using a pair of Acoustic Research AR4x's that I pulled out of a dumpster, but with my new monitor there isn't enough room for them to fit properly. I need to get some new bookshelf speakers that are 7" wide or smaller, and don't require a subwoofer crossed over way high to avoid sounding thin. I have no idea what's good on the market right now, which is made even harder to figure out due to the size constraint. So if anybody happens to know some nice speakers that are that small, I'd be very grateful for the advice.

Which is better in a bang-for-buck sense? Actives really appeal to me, but the inner-"audiophool" contests that passive will always be better quality. Thoughts?

Thinking of adding a REL T/5i subwoofer to flesh out the bottom end of the Moth Cicadas. This will be for stereo playback only, no HT, in a small room (146 cu ft). Anyone, have any experience integrating a sub with the Moths? Or with the REL subwoofer?

So it looks like I absolutely must get a REL sub to fill out the low low frequencies in my speaker system. The model I am immediately drawn towards is the T1, and I'd prefer to find one used. Does anyone have any suggestions or guidance they would like to offer in regards to these subs? EDIT: See also this thread

Just plugged it in today. Wow, fantastic bass, in fact too much, had to pull out my horns from the corners a bit. May need to play around with stuffing or even loading the outputs with some resistance to get some extra dampening. Crystal clear, focused sound, beautiful soundstage and great tone. Nelson Pass knows his stuff. Currently being driven by the headphone output of my moth with EML 45 tubes using a 1/4 inch to RCA adapter with monster cables, lol. I can't wait to get my real headphone/preamp when it's done. Pictures probably tomorrow or the weekend.

My original plan for intro speakers was to just get active ones like the Audioengine A5s. However, I got a good deal on some floorstanding Wharfedales from someone about an hour away and jumped on it. Sadly, when I went to pick them up, he wasn't there to give them to me. Communication error on my part most likely Now that I look at my situation I'm thinking bookshelf speakers are the way to go anyways so... I'm out gas money but that's not a big deal. The question I have now is which route to take...Should I use the integrated amp I have (NAD 320BEE) and get some <$200 bookshelf speakers or go with something like the Audioengine A5s. I'm looking for speaker amps for a pair of 92 dB, 8-12 ohm speakers, AudioKinesis Jazz Modules. So far what I've been looking at has been anywhere from 8 to ~50 watts, although I guess I'm shooting for the 16-30 watt range. I'd like to get your guys' recommendations on brands/amps to look into. Right now, any price range is fine- I'll narrow it down later. This is for a home system for next year, but I'm antsy and like planning ahead. In particular, I'm interested in any cool-running amps in this range. All I've come up with so far are the Red Wine stuff and Resolution S30 (part of the Opus system). OK I want to venture into full speakers utilizing my Alamarro A205AmkII that I currently use with my K1000. At the dealer I purchased the Almarro, he was demonstrating it with Zu Druids (?) with tremendous effect. But I need something smaller, suitable for SET amps (technically the Almarro is a 5 wpc single-ended pentode). From my feeble google effort, I find Coincident Triumphs and Zu Cradenza Credanza/Tone, but are there others I should consider??

Hey guys, been using some CD cases as speaker stands. I want to find something 8x4x4 or similar....must be at least 8" tall....made from metal or wood...wood would be a plus. Going to hold up 5lbs speakers so it needs to be sturdy...

Hi all, I'd appreciate your help on the following: I have medium pile carpeting over an uneven floor in my listening room. My old Apogee Centaurs used to have spikes and they were always a nuisance because it was so hard to reposition. After those speakers died (RIP - I loved them!), I have since acquired a pair of used Meadowlark Shearwater Hotrods which I'm very happy with, but they didn't come with their spikes. I am noticing now that the left speaker's back left edge is tilted back a bit because of my uneven flooring under the carpeting. Now I'm missing those spikes I used to hate. Someone (I have a pretty guess as to who it was) got behind my electrified fence, barbed/razor wire and broken glass set on top of a concrete wall in front of my A/V system, and broke the jumper cables on my speakers. After being pissed and lecturing everyone about no one being allowed back there and turning up the current on the electrified fence, I figured it was a chance to biwire my speakers, which I'd thought about for a while, but never did. Well, my Harmon Kardon AVR 85 is giving up the ghost faster than I had hoped. Since I have the Smyth Research Realiser and plan to use that inline with pre outs from a surround processor to speaker amps (not for awhile, may end up with active monitors mainly in the future), I am focusing on separates now. No need for amp(s) yet, just the front end processing. HDMI switching is not a priority for me at all, since my TV has 4 HDMI inputs, and I'm only using one right now. I'm planning on using my ?22 as a preamp with McIntosh MC2100 and Eminent Tech LFT-8b. Just wondering if anyone around here knows how ?22 stacks up as a preamp. I'm hoping to get a standalone unit, but that won't be for a while with recent and upcoming non-audio expenditures. Oh, and anyone has thoughts on Promitheus Audio TVC? As I was setting up the New Marantz SR6005 receiver, I noticed that the sound coming out of the right front speaker was much lower than that of the left. I don't seem to be getting any sound out of the tweeter on that speaker. These aren't super great speakers (av123 X-SLS tower speakers) so I don't want to put much money into them. However, since I have spent a bit of money on audio stuff recently, I don't know what I want, I don't really want to get new speakers right now (eventually I will probably and get a full new 5.1 setup). So I built the Jonokuchi for my office and it's working quite well. It's a very respectable headphone amp and currently I have it driving a small pair of JVC speakers that came from a defunct mini system. But as always, I want MOAR! But there's a counterproductive requirement, which is that they have to be small, really small. The JVC's are about 4" wide, 5" tall and maybe 8" deep. My space can support something slightly larger with width only being able to be pushed about 1" larger, depth is more flexible but probably doesn't need to be. I've got a great pair of speakers in the Alon Lotus SE's. They do so much right and are untouchable (IMHO) in the used under $2k category but I have been chasing the horn dragon since attending VSAC a few years back. Best sound at the show for me was a toss up between the GoTo horns and the modded Altec Voice of the Theaters that Exemplar was running. The presence was downright scary and they were super fast. Well I've owned the Klipsch Heresy speakers and they did not do much for me. They were fun but showed their age with lack of extension and detail. This was after a cap upgrade and tweeter upgrade.
