With my headphone amp also being a decent preamp, I have some interest in active monitors for when speaker listening is an option. I know that there is a fairly strong Quad active fanbase around here. I came across the Tannoy Reveal line: Seems this series has a bunch of options, ranging from passive, to active, to active w/digital inputs, all basically differing in driver size (5, 6, 8"). Anyone heard any version of these?

These are impressions/mini-reviews of some small floorstanding speakers I've heard over the last 6-8 months or so. They include the Dynaudio Audience 72SE, Sonus Faber Concerto Domus, B&W 804S, Fab Audio Brat, Living Voice Avatar, and Acoustic Zen Adagio. The first 3 were auditioned with Class? & Chord electronics, the others with Korato tube amps and Exposure CD players. Part 1. The mainstream speakers. First the Dynaudio Audience 72SE. My Galantes are sold and I'm going to go for some smaller speakers. Right now I'm between this and Kef iQ3's. The KEF's are a little less with shipping, like $340. Do you guys have any other ideas? I'm trying to stay under $400 for speakers. Amp I'm not so sure, I was thinking of one of the Class D things like Kingrex, Winsome, or Nuforce Icon, or maybe that Glow Audio Amp One that is getting raves.

I have a shitty insignia receiver that is only rated for 6 ohm speakers according to the manual but a pair of suspiciously cheap ribbon speakers came up on craigslist that I'm probably going to get. The problem is that they have 4 ohms impedance. If I listen at a modest volume will I risk blowing my receiver?

So I recently bought some short speaker cable from BJC terminated with banana plugs. I figured I'd have no trouble using the banana plugs the B speaker terminals on my 840A since it was super easy hooking up my 22L's with banana plug terminated speaker wire. Lo and behold, I'm just here trying to setup my SRD-7/mk2, and the fucking plugs won't go into the terminal. A quick flick of the flash light reveals: what the fuck? why the hell would cambridge put little pieces of black plastic in JUST the b terminals so banana plugs can't be used there? I'm no expert on speaker amps, could somebody please tell me what the fucking point of this is so I can stop saying fu…

Hi, I've been looking for some speakers for a while. And these popped out. However, my main 2 concerns are: 1. Lifespan. Apparently from what I've read, these speakers don't last long, with the delamination and whatsoever other issues. Frankly I don't know anything about them, but I was just concerned after reading through all the searches that popped out regarding issues with old planars. So how bad is it really? As in, does it really spoil so easily, and require high maintainance? And if so, is it easily repairable? 2. Performance. Hopefully this belongs in the speaker forum. Finally arrived after a long ordeal with Fedex: It looks great with the rest of the family: Ah, all that black and blue looks snazzy! Silver dynahi sticks out like a sore thumb. No listening impressions, because of course I have no speaker wire. :'( Still, it is a substantial unit, quite heavy. It definitely turns on, which is a plus. The volume control makes a fun clicking noise. So in other words its already worth the asking price, sound be damned.

Once we get into the new home, I'm officially separating the current speaker rig from the living room TV. I'll need some semi-decent audio solution that meets the following: Either sits completely on a slim shelf or has as small a footprint as possible < $1,000, all-in. This includes any necessary amplification or other source-related stuff to get to the end of the signal. Mostly midrange-centric. I don't need a lot of bass... actually less may be preferred. Some of you might recall me having some issues with my Cicadas just a short time ago; if not here was my comment from a week/few weeks back: I followed the suggestions that were given to me concerning placement (thanks again fellas), and it does seem to be a little better now, but the low-end in particular still is imbalanced with the left side playing more strongly. As many of you know I recently came into possession of a nice set of Quad ESL-63 USA Monitors, serial numbers 24783 and 24784. Unfortunately one of the speakers (24784) exhibits a moderate volume squealing noise, with no apparent drop out in the audio. This speaker recently had new panels from Electrostatic Solutions installed by the previous owner. The other speaker is all original parts and functions perfectly. So I shoot Kent at Electrostatic Solutions an email to tell him about the problem. He writes me back and politely says its difficult for him to make a diagnosis without seeing the speaker for himself. I spent a day or so mulling over what will no doubt …

I'm looking for 1. Reasonably full range, extend down to 46hz or more 2. Easy to drive: 88+ dB/w, preferably 8ohm 3. Not too big, (Harbeth Compact 7 is about the biggest I can use) 4. Front ported or sealed 5. Cost less than 3000 for a used one in good condition Musical preference: classical and Wagner. Listening at relatively low levels (in an apartment). Therefore, vocals and ability to come alive at low volume are important. Speakers will be used on desktop, about 2 feet away from where I sit. I'm considering Merlin TSM and Harbeth Compact 7. They seem like good choices, but I'd like to hear more suggestions.

I admit that Wes Phillips' reviews of these two flagship models have got me looking at them, but everything I read seems intriguing and alluring. These are shockingly high cost items, so I am both hesitant to go too far down the rabbit hole of this fixation and yet still very curious. I also admit that the K-XR User Manual's suggestion that a balanced tape out could be used for a headphone amplifier made my heart go pitter-pat. Recognition in the highest of the high end! Anybody else heard the these and/or have any opinions on them or their design? A local dealer reps them, so I hope to get a listen later this week.

I just realized that I probably won't ever be able to afford a decent multichannel setup, even though I believe that is the primary benefit of the new digital formats... perhaps a lot of "stereophiles" are the same way - they don't actually have a philosophical bias against multichannel recordings, they just can't stomach the cost of buying the new equipment (e.g., 5 more speakers, amps, preamps/controllers, cables, stands, etc.). So I am a stereophile by default.

Thinking of adding a REL T/5i subwoofer to flesh out the bottom end of the Moth Cicadas. This will be for stereo playback only, no HT, in a small room (146 cu ft). Anyone, have any experience integrating a sub with the Moths? Or with the REL subwoofer?

I sold my T-Amp and want something else. I have Athena AS-B1 bookshelf speakers so I am not really looking for anything super fancy. For now, I will be using Pico as pre-amp. I looked at T-Amp 2, but i'd rather get something more expensive and higher quality. Would prefer not to go vintage route coz been there done that already. Any recommendations are welcomed.

I'm looking for speaker amps for a pair of 92 dB, 8-12 ohm speakers, AudioKinesis Jazz Modules. So far what I've been looking at has been anywhere from 8 to ~50 watts, although I guess I'm shooting for the 16-30 watt range. I'd like to get your guys' recommendations on brands/amps to look into. Right now, any price range is fine- I'll narrow it down later. This is for a home system for next year, but I'm antsy and like planning ahead. Looking to get a set of active studio monitors. Having a hard time deciding between a set of coaxial's such as Equator or PreSonus or ribbon's such as Emotiva or Adam. Both have their pros and cons, but there is no way for me to try all of them in my office. Budget is about $1,500.

I'm going to get a SS amp to compare with the Manleys with the new Harbeths when they get here. has to have balanced inputs, can be stereo or monoblocks. Must be in the $3k or less range. No room on this one. has to have at least 200-300 watts into 8 ohms. What i want i cant afford, thats the Arye V-1xe. had one and it was the nicest SS amp i had heard or owned.
