  1. Helped a friend make it home safely: Remember kids, don’t try this at home, my first graduate student at EIU studied the atrazine and glyphosate dynamics in snapping turtles.

  2. New backup process is in place and verified working. It's doing daily for now but may bump it up to every 4-6 hrs, we'll see.

  3. What The Hell Happened to Head-Case?!?!? TLDR version: The datacenter that the head-case server is located in sustained a power outage on April 4. When the backup generator kicked on it caught fire and that lead to the fire suppression system (a fucking water based one!) kicking on and causing water damage to equipment. The head-case server was in the 'more affected' area of the datacenter and as such was offline until early in the morning on April 24. For further details on the incident you can see here: https://webnx.com/outage-updates/ You may be wondering why during such a long time the site wasn't simply migrated elsewhere, this is a fair question and the answer is simple. As this is a hobby site the backup process hadn't been properly verified as working in quite a while and the latest verified backup was nearly a year old. Migrating the site and loading it from that last verified backup would have meant losing a years worth of content. This was not a valid option and until I could confirm that the drives in the server were dead I wasn't willing to restore that old of a backup. From what I can tell there has been no data loss but I don't currently have a full report as to what if any hardware needed replacing to get the server back online. Due to that lack of info, I don't trust the server and I wouldn't be surprised if there's some additional downtime due to hardware issues. The Future A fresh backup at the time of this post has been taken and moved off-site. Over the next week or so a new backup process will be put in place and verified. After that is done it's very likely that the site will be moved to a new hosting provider. Further details about any move will be provided at the proper time.

  5. This is only an updated version of the FETRON, introduced in 1972 by Teledyne. A thick film hybrid JFET amp in the header of something that looked like a nuvistor. fetron.pdf

  7. I put my 116710LN on for the first time in a couple months a little while ago. I figured it would be way off, living on a winder and given the date wheel issue. 9 years old. Never serviced. On a winder for two months. It was +19. That’s hard to not be impressed by, I think.

  8. Heyyyy we're back bitches! Twin Shadow is one of those Prince types who plays every instrument on his own tunes. Usually a little more electro but this has a good energy?

  9. Making some good progress on the amp... I’ve got the USB-C PD all soldered on and ready for testing Here’s the face plate with the jack Here’s the amp assembled, but I still need to finish the power supply and amp sections of the main board

  18. Great, this is the first time I see them boards, even if it’s just on photo. I want to add that one name is missing on the boards – Kevin Gilmore. Kevin added a few things like trimmers to set output current, test points to measure it, terminal blocks, part values, labels etc. etc.. During the work with the boards he taught me how to quickly make a mirrored (as far as possible) board from the first one. Thank you, Kevin. Welcome to Head-Case, Rich (sweetleaf)!

  19. Joachim never sleeps, if he isn't climbing the Keb, he's grinding out PCB's I have some Fjallraven Keb trousers, they are awesome. Just saying hello and announcing my up-coming Carbon build using Joachim's older compact SMD version of the Carbon layout. I might be the first to use these but Joachim gave his blessing so I'm sure everything will be fine. These left/right mirrored boards use the discrete servo by Kerry, seen prior to Kevin's offset opto circuit. Several reasons why I chose these older boards; they are beautifully compact allowing me to work inside a 200mm inside width case, I love SMD and the left / right layout is genius, this should be done more. The PSU is the kgsshvpssicfetsmall3.zip V1.4 all in one, single PCB. This will be a two box amp with an custom R-Core by James Transformers, same as Bigir uses in the CC edition. The R-Core is the size of a small car so will need a 80mm high case. No SiC Fets available until next month unfortunately but PCB parts are arriving soon and Bigir helped with the 5 pin pro jack. I have LSK389 on hand and MPSA65 from a guy on DIYA, everything will be to original spec. Big thanks to Joachim, Kerry and Kevin for all the work, advice and putting up with the questions. Keep it going Mafia.

  20. The board is two layers, but I had to use .5mm spacing for the USB. It also has a lot of 0402 components. I don’t think you could use a mill for the PD section. Also those USB and battery management chips were a nightmare. It’s funny that after placing all those 0402 parts the 0603 stuff seems easy and the 0805 parts seem gigantic. I used an oven to bake it since I was afraid the hot air station would blow those smaller parts away. The DAC will use the XMOS input and will be on a separate board. We’ll have a version of the input board that is analog only.

  23. I've been a bit focused on Garry Winogrand over the last couple of weeks. First to really popularize that 28mm FL, so popular on cell phones, and was a relentless shooter some call "the first digital photographer", though it was all on film. If you don't already know him and are curious, see below. There's a great doc too, trailer first.

  27. Milo and I hung and plumbed a range hood vent for the kitchen. Then we assembled the new tile saw and started tiling in the kitchen. It went pretty smooth. Milo is already pretty good at setting and cutting tile after only 4 hrs.

  29. Your L3 & DSHA-4 are really the two amps that brought out better "headstage" out of my HD800 & R10 and really make them to compete with the 007/009 for me. I agree with Steve that the K1000 has widest soundstage, but the Qualia is the best at depth cues and second at the width so it really enhance the illusion of being "there" despite its rather odd tonal balanced. Plus the K1000 is more of a stationary listening device....you really can't move around the house with those. I really enjoyed the Utopia when I had mine, but treble was a little much for me and I preferred just a little more headstage out of them. I really can't fault the Utopia on anything else...maybe on how heavy it is. The HD800 SDR mod is actually the headphone that I use the most. It fits my lifestyle better for fraction of the price. It is my all around beater headphones. I toss it in my backpack and take it to work on a daily basis. It sounds great out of my mod Sony NW-ZX507 and glorious out of Doug ECP L3/DSHA-4.

  31. Got myself a pair of these. So I’m very much prepared for a battery powered amp.
