February 24, 201313 yr Brought the iMac to the Apple Store today where they agreed it was the logic board that needed to be replaced, so they placed the order and I signed off on the repair and left the machine at the store. Then, a few hours later, the store called and said they had decided to offer me a replacement machine instead. I said of course YOU BETCHA. I'm pleased with that result. I wasn't expecting less than a new machine from Apple service, the replacement offer didn't sound "proper". Good to know, thanks for sharing the experience, and congrats, I wish the new one works fine
February 24, 201313 yr I'm also glad to see you got this resolved. So, does the RAM you wanted to add work in the replacement?
February 24, 201313 yr I went to Apple today for hubby's nano that stopped working. The just gave me a new one. Gotta love that.
February 25, 201313 yr Must be nice to just have oodles of cash in the back and just give replacements.
February 27, 201313 yr Must be nice to just have oodles of cash in the back and just give replacements. Well where do you think the overhead goes? Certainly not in Jobs' coffer. Too soon?
March 3, 201313 yr So, does it make me shallow if I think the best feature of my new MBA is the backlit keyboard? Oh, and hurray for migration assistant.
March 3, 201313 yr Um...no? Isn't that utilitarian more than vain? Or do you actually like the way it looks?
March 3, 201313 yr ... Or do you actually like the way it looks? That is not the primary reason I like it, but I must admit it does increase its hawtness!
March 3, 201313 yr What program for bootable backups on Mac? Superduper or Carbon Copy Cloner or other? Can you use the same harddrive as the time machine backups (I think you can on superduper)?
March 3, 201313 yr I've used SuperDuper for few years now with no issues. You should be able to use SuperDuper with your Time Machine backups, though this creates a disk image so you won't be able to look through the files in the backup. Also, iirc, if you go the disk image route, SuperDuper will have to backup the whole thing each time, as opposed to updating only things that changed (which it can do if provided with its own partition/drive). March 3, 201313 yr I've used Carbon Copy Cloner for a few years also with no issues. Never had to use a backup, but I've tested them and they are bootable. Don't know about using the same HD as with the TM backups but I don't see why not.
March 4, 201313 yr My iMac will finally be ready tomorrow (or so they say). Now it is unclear whether they got a new machine or stuffed a bunch of new boards into my old machine.
March 4, 201313 yr 2nd SuperDuper - yes on TM drive use if you have the room. Might want to Partition the TM drive in two.
March 6, 201313 yr I switched to SuperDuper years ago when CCC was still having issues with stealing huge chunks of hard drive space if you aborted a clone, and haven't gone back. It's nice because you can create all kinds of bootable clones, some with all the files or some with only certain files that you want to put on a new machine. So you can clone a 750GB Mac onto a 500GB drive by de-selecting the iTunes Media Folder or some of the users that you don't need. I also like that I can do a really fast incremental clone of my 3TB iTunes external drive onto a 3TB backup to keep off-site. When I used CCC years ago I could not clone a non-bootup drive.
