I was wondering what headphone cable length would be ideal for a home setup. My logic tells me that shorter is better, since it will limit the total cable capacitance. Of course it needs to be long enough to not be inconvenient and flexibility also plays an important role. Let's just assume that I'd use a balanced version of Alex' V3 cable. Assuming an audio rack setup next to a medium sized desk I would think that a 6' cable would be enough for regular use, and then an extension cable could be used for when you want to sit in the couch and use your cans for nighttime TV watching. I might've missed some common usage scenarios, but this is what I could think of o…

Hi, I'm looking for some IEM recommendations. My current IEMs (that I really like) are Etymotic ER4S. I really enjoy them for many types of music, but they're not amazing for all types of rock. I think they do Radiohead very well, but Tool, or Children of Bodom? Not so much. Also, I don't really have much of an opportunity anymore to use my full sized set ups (RS-1, HD650, HD595, HD590, AKG K701s), and I'd like some variety. I've had the Shure SE530 before (lost them- fell out of my pocket...), but I didn't actually like them that much. I tried them with the various inserts, but they were never really excellent, imho. What I really like about the ER4S are …

When I was llving in NYC, I used my Etys all the time. They were great in the subway and walking to work. There was only one time that I almost got hit by bus. My other senses eventually compensated and everything was grand. Here in Ohio I don't have as much use for them, so I haven't been listening as much. I even experimented with a couple of close headphones, thinking that I would benefit from the easy of being able to take them on and off. I settled on the A900. Anyway, I tried the Etys again for a first time in a while and remembered how much they kick the A900's ass. Frankly, it's not even close. I've always been happy with the Etys, but my question to cur…

I received my APureSound ER4P cable yesterday from Alex. Ever since the cable on my ER4P began cutting in and out, I had been thinking about whether I should go for [AK]Zip's cable (costs about the same as the Ety itself) or send it to Etymotic for repair (said to be $50). After hearing APureSound recabled KSC75 at a recent meet, I became convinced that it was worth it. I had no question about the workmanship as Alex is well regarded. My trepidation was about the degree of improvements that would be achieved. My only complaint about the ER4P/S sound was that it can sound a tad thin at times, and it seemed that Alex's cable would address this. Enough blabbering, on with…

  9. Started by aerius,

I've had a couple weeks or so to get used to my RS-1, so far I'm really happy with it and it has for the most part replaced my heavily modified K340 as my main headphone. I guess I'll give a summary of the larger differences for now and then go on to cover other things. Headroom: The RS-1 can play a hell of a lot louder without sounding strained. If I push my K340 it'll start sounding a little plasticky and echoey, and if I want to play Slayer at earbleed volumes it goes to crap. The colourations get really bad, the soundstage mushes into a shitty blob, and it sounds very compressed and strained. The RS-1 just keeps getting louder until my ears hurt. The treble gets a…

  10. Good day to all! New Member here. I'm not really an Audiophile and i don't really have ultra sensitive ears but i can make enough distinction between the earphones that came with my mobile devices and something with a higher quality. I would love to get an Audio Technica ATH - M50X but they're out of my budget range. At the moment i am enjoying my ATH-S300 and ATH-WS33X both under 70 USD (3,000 PHP). though the cheaper of the two i find myself liking the ATH-S300 more. At the moment im looking for an under $50 in ear headphones for the daily grind after i gave away my sound magic PL11 and Audio Technica CLR-100 to my cousins. Both good earphones for their price but im…

  11. Hey all I listen to all types of rock. Mainly listen to stuff like Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Smashing Pumpkins, Tool, Mars Volta, Porcpine Tree and 90s alt rock. All in FLAC of course. From my research it appears the Shure SE425 would be a good choice I'm in the £50-150 pound bracket. Willing to go more if its REALLY worth it. Looks like I can score some great deals on ebay. The SE 535 are just ridiculously more expensive here in the UK. Not sure if there is anything else I should consider? Or any anyone tell me what I really need in terms of like mid ranges, treble etc? Thanks for your time and any help.

  12. Hello there, My old headphones (Gamecom Plantronics 367) just broke after about a year of usage and they vere amazing considering the price (25£ with postage), but now I need some new ones. I have a budget of about 100£ in total, since I'm a student so money is hard to come by (I'm gonna have to go without lunch for about a month to afford this, but it's worth it.. I haven't had music in months) So my question is, what should I get? Here are my priorities in order: #1 sound quality. If I can get some with better sound than the Gamecom ones I had, I will be in heaven. #2 durability. I really want them to not.. you know.. break easily. I bring my headphones with me at…

Yup. Right outtta the box. WTF? I was prepared to jump into a pair of SR-325i's, but after listening to them compared to the RS-2, I opted to upgrade. The RS-2 just sounded smoother and much more musical and relaxed. The demo pair was nice with not alot of hours, so I knew the sound would only get better. I paid my bill and brought home a sealed box. Hoo-yeah! After an hour, I heard the first stage of break in pass by...waitaminute....really? Yes, the sound had a very obvious change and I had to review the last few tunes to really believe it. Cool. Then I started listening more critically. It was then that I started fiddling with the balance. I slid t…

  14. Started by Pars,

On my commute, I have been using Apple Earbuds, which seem to leak a bit of sound. I am normally riding on a train car designated as "Quiet Car" and have had a couple of people look at me if I'm really cranking something, so I was looking for something that didn't leak as much. I know, JH13 I ran across the HifiMan HE400s on innerfidelity, which Tyll seemed to like, and can get these for around $50. I also noticed they have an HE400i (iPhone) or HE400a (Android). From what I can tell, these do not have a microphone, but do have the inline volume control thingy? The reviews seem to indicate that the inline controls are cheap and break. I never really use these, but i…

I pulled this from the other site. I would surely protect my daughter from all you ortho weirdos, but nonetheless these pretty wood boxes may be of interest to you. A little pricy for a donor frame, maybe, but zebras died to make these headphones, and if anyone can fill them with felt, y'all can.

  18. Now it shouldn't come as a massive shock to anybody but I'm not much of a SR-009 fan. From day 1 they always sounded messed up to me and the BK and S didn't really make it any better, even a bit worse with the 009S. To this day I have only one 009BK (as it is a limited edition) in my collection and one regular 009 that showed up here randomly and was a stark improvement over all the other sets I've owned. No idea why those sound different but better not mess with them. Now the plan was always to do something with the 009's to improve them but there was always something better to do. Well with surgery pending a couple of months ago, I finally had time to do some…

  19. As most of you know, the new Stax Lambdas suck compared to the older models. This "fact" has puzzled me for quite a while since the same drivers mounted in either the SR-Sigma or the 4070 housings just sing. In the case of the Sigmas, the Sigma 404 out paces the other two Sigma models in every area I can think of by a large margin. To make a long story short, I picked up an old, beaten up SR-404 in Japan to test out some theories. I could have bought a new one but half the fun is to take some old, neglected banger and make them shine again. The first thing I noticed about this set was that the drivers didn't align like they should. They were only a couple of mill…

The other place has been awash of inane useless drivel lately. http://www.head-fi.org/forums/f4/who-likes-new-headphone-smell-296771/ The only post worth reading was Wayne's sarcastic reply, but it seems this is the only crap being posted lately. Granted there doesn't seem to be a ton of useful headphone info posted here every day, but at least the threads have some value, even if only for their bull whip sharp sarcastic wit.

  21. Is it possible to remove a grado driver and leave the cup intact? I want to remove some drivers from their plastic housings without cutting up the housing. I watched the grado assembly video on their site and they just pop in the front and are secured with a little CA I'm guessing. My though was to cut out as much of the driver as I could, then soak it face down in acetone. What do you think?

  22. Started by Hordsak,

I've been into mid hi-fi the last few years. I used to think my Logitech Z-5500's were the best things on the planet. Now, that I've gotten into decent headphones, I know the difference. Would it be a fair assessment to say that cheap / entry level headphones turn everything into a blended / muddy mess? I've found with going up a little bit in the scale of equipment that my music listening experience has greatly increased, mainly because the you can pick out where the sounds come from, and it's separation etc. (as opposed to a grinded blend of sound) How do you explain this to a friend that rocks ipod buds?
