Grok Headphones in Fullness

  1. Started by forbigger,

Guys, I'm back again and this time please don't slam me Where I live I cannot audition any electro system since no one I know have one. But the idea of this have been intriguing me and I come to an agreement with Woo for a GES for delivery in Christmas this year. Jack is just waiting for my green light. Now, I need advise from you guys (and mind you, I don't have any experience at all with electro outside from what I read), should I get the Koss EP950 or SR404 ? Or maybe any other choices for the phones ? Wanted an Omega but too dear for my taste. I would like to build a system that is pretty much near the top end so I wouldn't worry too much in upgrading. And this…

Interesting news from AKG. So I recently recabled my K1000 (did a damn fine job at it if I do say so myself). I was comparing them to Hirsch's Stefan Art hardwire K1000 and we noticed a decided shift in tonal balance. His had significantly more treble emphasis than mine (a little more detail and impact as well). So I thought 2 things...cable and age? I tried re-recabling them and got a little more treble but not like Hirsch's. So off to AKG they go because I thought maybe I fucked something up in the recable (unlikely as I was very careful, but possible). Well, the AKG rep told me that I did a fine job.....so good, he was very impressed, especially since he's rec…

  3. Hey guys, I'm new here... and I know you guys dont typically like Ultrasones so please dont shoot me So I've been thinking about getting a full sized pair of headphones for use at home again, and have been tempted by the Ultrasone Pro 900. For some reason, people seem to like em over at HF, but I wanted a second (more trustworthy) opinion. I've read these have a lot of bass, and U-shaped FR. This seems like a good thing to me because I tend to listen a very, very low volumes, and I am somewhat of a basshead. The price for these arent that bad either since they can easily be found new at $200 less than MRSP, and used at around 300 or so. But I'm still unsure wit…

wtf? I hope this isn't the big announcement. Sennheiser to unveil new corporate design at CES 2010 Sennheiser, one of the world’s leading producers of microphones, headphones and wireless transmission systems has evolved its corporate design that is to be unveiled at this year's CES show. At the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) the audio specialist will be introducing itself for the first time with a new design. “The new corporate design brings our profile into focus and is an important step within the framework of the brand strategy. Throughout this process it was important for us to ensureSennheiser ’s three brand values – premium quality, pa…

I was able to listen to the GMP 435 S thanks to the ongoing loan program in Head Fi. I received the cans on January 8, 2010. This is not my first experience w/ a German Maestro headphone, having previously listened to the GMP 8.300 D. I do not know how many hours of burn-in this unit has; they should have plenty of burn-in since it has gone through several HF members before reaching my hands. Since I have no way of knowing and since I will be able to keep them for two weeks I will start by burning them in for 100 hours or so. For now straight out of the box my initial impressions are: Like: - Very lightweight - Extremely comfortable, plus it easily adjusts w…

Inspired by this thread: The Best Senn Below the HD800 - Head-Fi: Covering Headphones, Earphones and Portable Audio and what started out as an intentionally silly response on my part: http://www.head-fi.org/forums/6266249-post84.html, I'm now putting my theory to the test! As I mentioned in that post, I'd pick the HE90 over the HD800 if I could only keep one pair of Senns, but both are world class headphones IMO. I'd place the HE60 third, I think, but I haven't had enough time with them to know exactly how they might compare. Yet, they're probably close enough to the HE90 that they might edge out the HD800 as well, for the same sorts of reasons I suggested in t…

I had a chance to demo some HD380s yesterday (through an Apogee Mini-DAC). I listened to some rock (Tragically Hip) and Gordon Downie's voice sounded "hollowed out", like part of his voice was missing. Trebles were weak. Bass, on the other hand, was good, but I'm not a bass-head. I listened to a few more rock and electronic tracks but it was pretty clear to me that none of my music was going to sound like music with these cans. Isolation and fit were both good, not that it really matters. My search for closed cans continues...

I have a pair of wooden MS1's which I find incredible for listening to electric guitar rock. I tried a pair of RS2is but they didn't accurately portray the tone of the guitar (IMO.) So what would be next to try as an upgrade: HF2's, RS1's, or MS-pros ?

Ok the original HD800 thread is absurdly long time to break out impressions into this thread.

  11. Started by Chekhonte,

I just bought a pair and love them. I know that they aren't liked very much around here but can't for the life of me figure out why?

  12. Started by Hopstretch,

I know this was probably endlessly hashed out on HF back in the day, but I'm late to the HP1000 party and most of what I have been able to unearth over there is just the usual clueless blithering. So I ask you fine gents: Is there generally held to be a significant difference in sound quality between the HP1s and HP2s? I really, really dig the HP1s I got from Jim and I'm thinking thoughts. You know the ones.

Hey guys, At the last meet, I really enjoyed the k340's. They sounded great out of various setups, especially the zana. The bass was quite full and deep, I personally did not hear any issues or lack of. It was a headphile modded version though. I would really love to pick up a set. I have no idea though what I should be looking for. I have read about different versions. There seems to be an assortment of mods that can be done to improve performance, which I haven't quite grasped on. Ideally I would love to pick up a used set modded by a reputable user, just need to know what to look for and/or what questions I should be asking. Thanks guys.

It has been a very long time since I've been in the market for a semi-full sized, closed headphone. The last one I had was the AKG K81DJ. I liked that pair of cans well enough, except for the comfort: they pinched my ears like no other, and I can't wear them for more than half an hour without feeling discomfort. From what I've gathered, people here like the ATH-ESW9 for a semi-full sized closed headphone. The fact that they are supposed to sound decent straight out of an iPod also makes them appealing. However, I still have concerns about comfort. I have big ears that are long but not wide. So most headphones end up pinching my the top and bottom of my earlobes, and …

I brought my Omega 2 setup to my friend's reference system and we did a shootout with the K1000. Source: Naim CD555 and power supply (we used digital mostly because it is easier than vinyl when doing lots of music changing) Preamp: modified EAR 864 Power amps: custom built 300B/ECC99 monoblocks, WE300B Headphone amp: Headamp Blue Hawaii, EH tubes Cables: Kimber Kable, Crystal Cable, Stealth, don't know exact details Headphones: AKG K1000 (11xxx sn), Omega 2 MK1 (both stock) Speakers: Avantgarde Duo 2.1 The Blue Hawaii was run from the loop out of the preamp. The K1000 connected directly to the monoblocks using the extension. These are reference amp…

Anyone heard these? Are they worth a shit? I may order some just because they look intriguing. I would be using a beefed up Raptor with Tung Sol and Telefunken tubes and an EAR HP4 to drive them with an Esoteric DV-60 as a transport and Reimyo DAP 999. Any opinions would be great before ordering more stuff I won't keep and lose money on. Looks like I need to update my signature, all the heavy duty Esoterics are in my home system now.

Guys, looking to sell my MS1 and use the money to buy new phone. Which is better ? AD2k or W5k ? And would the 30-40% diff between AD2k and W5k justifiable ? I know I can always count on the opinion of the people in this forum......Appreciate any advise.....

  19. Started by deepak,

I've put around 6 or 7 hours on these so far. They're much, much better than when I last heard them. -the treble isn't as tipped up as I remember (still on jazz that extends really high, it gets a little fatiguing) -bass extension is not very good (audible at 30 Hz, very good down to 40 Hz) -HF extension is good (~18 Khz) -bass impact is an enigma. On certain albums it has a lot, other times you just hear the bass and it's not remotely palpable -some funkiness going on in the midrange, almost like the upper midrange is slightly recessed -soundstage can't figure this one out...the headstage is pretty small. But the drivers are angled towards your ears... -imagi…

I got home from work to find a box from the UK on my desk. Yippie! I hooked up the pig tail to my amps speaker taps, and plugged the 4 pin socket of the K1000 into that. Turned on my Beta22 and no sound. Hmmm let's see now, the amp seems to be working fine, the speaker adapter is hooked up right, what's missing? Oh yeah, maybe it's that thing that spins CDs that I just shipped out yesterday! My phono stage still has hum issues with my SUT, and the temporary phono stage I was using went tits up. So maybe selling my CD transport would have been better delayed a week or so. Well the new CDP is due to arrive Saturday. It's gonna be an eternity.

dad would like to get a pair of headphones. his office has gotten very noisy so he would like something closed but for him comfort is the top priority. sound quality doesnt even matter. this is what im thinking. Denon USA | AH-D1001 budget is roughly $150 shipped. nothing over. basically looking for a closed can that is super light weight and ultra comfortable. i dont know much about closed headphones so suggestions are welcome. will certainly not be using the headphones with an amp no matter how small as he is a desktop real estate freak. source will be a thinkpad laptop so a cable stock terminated to a mini plug would be a plus. also, he will be using it in his o…

  22. Started by Deadneddz,

Thanks to the Craigslist ad Collin posted I got a super deal on a pair of HE60's that I couldn't pass up. Met up with the guy locally and the transaction went super smooth. It was interesting, I asked him why he wanted to sell them, and he said that he has a pair of Stax Lambdas (didn't ask what model) and that his older brother whom he got this HE60 from actually owns 3 more. So he had 4 HE60s at one point! When he said this I immediately wondered how many HE60s were made in the first place. Poor sap said he never heard the HE60 from any other amp other than the HEV70. The phones came in the condition that it was described. From my inspection this pair seems to be i…

I just got a pair of these. I'm not real familiar with everything that's out there in the sub-$200 range, so I can't comment on the "are they the best $200 closed back phones ever" business. But I think they're pretty good. I was looking for not-too-expensive closed back cans for my portable. Basically, they're right at home there. They do everything pretty well. My RSA Tomahawk drives 'em with ease. They're not over bright (My ears. I'm allergic to bright, so I assume that means they're really not bright. But you never know.) They're nicer across the midrange with a Mogami Mini-Quad cable (said cable being a lot less of a pain in the ass then the coiled one that co…

Well, this document would at least seem to suggest that some of the rumors that I have been hearing over the past 6 months are true. From what I've heard the rumored street price in the US is ~$1000. There's also a thread on Head-Fi about this, but I don't think there's much in the way of additional information there, just a couple of new pictures.

  25. I am new in STAX but already fall in love with it after a few audition. Now I like to spend about US$ 500 - 600, yeah it is not enough to get the best Stax, but maybe you guys here can help me to decide what to chose with that amount that your experience has the best in sound quality. My interest is a light jazz and some classic music and maybe some pop music too. I do own a Qinpu A-6000 Hybrid amplifier, that might enough to drive an energizer. Any advice are wellcome, I like to hear your comments, thanks before.
