Headphones

Y'all, I picked up a set of one owner K400 on a whim recently and am enjoying them a lot, at least as a change to the STAX. Having otherwise been a STAX owner exclusively for 25 years, what else is out there new that has a similar sound to the K400 and is say <$US400 (in the US)? I have a need for another set of dynamics. I'll go out and listen first to as many of the suggestions as I can. Amps will be Dynalo's. Cheers

I was thinking about getting a good vintage AKG, and it seems the K500 is able to sound very good. It doesn't seem to have the Sextett has on headfi, but it still seems better sounding than K501 or K701, and in need of less amplification. What do you guys think?

I have the K701s and i'd read on this forum that there are some with 2 foam pad layers and some with one. I was wondering if there might be any way to tell which one I have without tinkering, using the serial number or something (I don't want to tinker for fear of irreversible damage)

I just bought a pair of AKG 701 headphones, and was wondering about the power rating. Their rated at 200mW. My amp puts out 300mW. I have to turn up the volume between 3/4 to all the way to get a decent volume level. Am I risking damge to the phones? There really not terribly loud at all. The Amp is a V.A.L. E10 tube hybrid.

All this time, I never bothered to take off the earpad, but once I did, I found TWO layers of substantial foam between the driver and the mesh. My camera is MIA, but one is a round piece of foam, and the other is another round piece with a small hole in the middle. These are what gives K701 that strange sensation of detailed yet kind of detached sound b/c once you take the foams out, K701 almost approaches the immediacy of high-end Grado's. Taking both foams out was a bit to much and stark, and I wouldn't recommend it unless your setup is quite dark and distant. But just taking out the foam with the hole has left me with a nice balance in my own setup; of cours…

For the purposes of scientific discovery, I am tempted to acquire a set of K702 to hear if you can get blood from a stone. The K701 that I have heard at meets are strangely resistant to presenting a lifelike sound. I know that these cans have many (deluded) proponents, but, like Luke Skywalker and Leia Organa, I trust my feelings. Is anyone running a K701 or K702 out of a beating valve-based system? I wonder if the only way to get a lame duck to fly is to feed it sweet, sweet harmonic distortion. TL;DR - curious headphone cat is curious

I managed to get a pair for pretty cheap, but I'm not really expecting much. At the very least I hope they can trump the KSC-75 for movies and laptop use.

I still have a soft spot for it. Might be interesting to hear the new K 272 HD. As far as closed headphones go, the K271 S was pretty darn good for the $150-200 price tag.

I was wondering if anyone knows anything about a new headphone .... or modded headphone called the Alessandro MS2 Magnum. A head-fi buddy mentioned this to me. The phone will cost like $200-300 more than the standard headphone and supposedly be very PS-1 like. Anyone?

Since I already have a pair of rs-1s, anyone think it would be worth owning a set of these too? Anyone want to compare them and stuff? How are they different?

I've searched both forums for decent information in that regard and got nothing. Can someone comment on their extension of the low range, in particular how rolled off they are at 30 and 20 hz? How much improvement is there over MS-1? (I have an MS-1 here).

No, I didn't get a pair of L3Ks or W5Ks. But I had been thinking about downsizing my office rig for a while. Having the dedicated DAC, Lunchbox and HD-600s seemed to be a little much. Lately I haven't been using them much at all, and figure it was time for a change when I came across a pair of ATH-EW9s for sale over on Head-Fi. A few months ago I decided to invest in a decent pair of headphones, and bought the Sennheiser HD 555 after all the good reccomendations. I've used them for a few months now and have been fairly dissapointed with them, they sound dull and lack in bass. I listen to most genres of music but in particular hip-hop; which I find these headphones are not all that suitable for. So I am now thinking of selling my Sennheiser's and getting another pair, with are more suitable for me, with my budget being anything under $150. Any reccomendations? Would the Grado SR60i/Audio Technica ATH-AD700 be good choices? Thanks
