Speakers

Any other GMA users here? I own Callistos (2nd system) and Calypsos (main system). If anyone here has questions about GMA speakers, drop me a line. I'm in the SF Bay Area and they have (I believe) a dealer now in SF.

I now have more speaker cabinets than I know what to do with. 4x Yamaha NS-1000s, some 15 years old and decidedly quirky. These served as the fronts and surrounds in my HT system for over 7 years. 2x Unisound AU265s, I'll get around to modding these at some point in a utopian future. 1x B&W CDN-CNT, center channel. There's also a pair of Pinnacle <mumbles> upstairs that were my father's and were re-drivered at some point. All of the above have been driven by my Rotel RMB-1075 since late 2003. Some poking around has led me to believe that DHT preamps should be really (really) good or their proponents are just very vocal about their choice I'm wondering what people here think? 26 tube DHT preamp another 26 DHT

Monsoon speakers seem to be the best computer speakers out there so I've been looking into getting a pair of MH-500s used on ebay. Does anyone have any experience with these?

Hey, TheSloth, did you see that they revamped the Quad site? Looks like they've reintroduced the active series, and they're introducing an upgrade on the L series, the L2 series. I wonder if they're going to do away with the L series? I hope not...

I know the Parasound line is well regarded in many circles. The Halo A21 amp particularly so but how do they do with preamps? Anyone got thoughts on the Halo P3?

Does anyone know where to buy rubber surrounds for an 8" woofer? It's a Focal 8k415fhdg. I think it is a version of the Focal 8k415 but tweaked for Hales Design Group. The rubber surround has a hole in it. I have the piece that was torn out and I've toyed with the idea of using adhesive to put it back in place but I would like to replace the whole thing if I can. So... I've kinda inherited my late father-in-law's main speakers, some Cerwin Vegas VS-150's. Anyone have any info on these? Anyone have something like this before getting into audiophiledom? I know he'd gotten a great deal on 'em back in the day, but had hooked them up with cheap cable... as in, 10$ walmart lamp-cable > this cable. So my director asked me to like get something for his office for music/demos/whatever with a budget of ~500 in total. I would have some suggestions 2 channel or 2.1, but any more than that is kind of beyond my experience outside of computer speakers.. any recs?

It has been a long time that I have purchased a pair of bookshelf speakers (1981 and I purchased a pair of AR18. Now I find myself wanting a pair that could serve initially as near-field speakers while working at the computer station but later (18 months away) to fill an small room (12' by 15'). So I auditioned the Sophia 2s and they sounded fantastic. Much better then the B&W 802s imo. This was with a high end Naim setup for both the 802s and the Sophias. I think I read here that the Wilson Audio Speakers are really overpriced for their performance. Is this right?

So I figure I would get better responses posting this question here instead of at head-fi, because you guys probably have more experience with speakers. So like the title says, what speakers would you recommend at $1000, new or used? My room size is a 10x12x10 (WxLxH). The one thing I don't want is for the sound to be too overwhelming, and I definitely do not want boomy bass. There will not be a subwoofer. I'm trying to decide what would be the best use of my money. I recently purchased a pair of Audioengine A5's, and I like them quite a bit. However, I recently became aware of the NHT M-00's, and I could probably afford a pair of those if I stretched my budget. The way I see it, I have two options. I could keep the A5's, add an Onix X-Sub, and call it a day. That would probably make for a pretty sweet 2.1 system. Alternatively, I could return the A5's and buy the M-00's, which I would imagine perform at a somewhat higher level than the A5's. I couldn't use my X-Sub in that setup, but that's not a deal breaker for me. It would probably be a long time before I could …

My rig is near my window and it seems that it is subject to some RF interference. My unshielded XLR cables buzzed, and now I suspect that the speaker cable that came with my AudioEngine 2's is picking up some interference. Is there any quick and easy way to shield the cheap speaker cable?

I’ve just finished building an EUVL F5X amp and now I’m after a decent set of speakers for $3500 which is pretty much my limit. The amp is rated around 50 watt stereo in 8 ohms. Short listed these after a couple of days searching and racking my brain... Reference 3A MM De Capo BE Proac Response 2 Usher Tiny Dancer BE 718 I owned a pair of Reference 3A royal master controls around 16 years ago, I loved them with a SET 300b amp at the time. Proac and Usher I have no experience, just read some favourable reviews. Maybe the Usher is a bit power hungry.. I dunno. Any help appreciated.

I just ordered a pair of these mono blocks for $899 with a 21 day return policy. I figured I would pick I would give them a try. Found some positive reviews of Emotiva bang-for-buck, but they've been a bit short on details. Anyone here have experience with the RPA2, XPA2 or any other Emotiva offerings? Not sure what speakers I'll finally mate with these, but at least initially it was be some CSW M80s. Likely use the Extreme Platinum as a preamp. Any guidance much appreciated. Hey- So I want to enter the world of speakers, and the Quad 22Ls that tkam has for sale have caught my eye. Of course they are visually very attractive, and all the reviews I've read say they are a good neutral speaker at their pricepoint, and even a better deal used. Basically I would just want a speaker that is decent across all genres, and doesn't really try to do anything except portray what is on the recording pretty well. My initial application would be in a small quasi-office room where my headphone rig is. I?m counting my chickens before they hatch a bit, but I?m looking for some suggestions/recommendations for speakers and power amp at around $1600-$2000. They will be fed by 840C as a source and I will most likely be using either my Beta22 or Luminous Audio Axiom as a preamp for the time being. I prefer clear and cohesive sound throughout with good PRaT, and I?ll always take bass quality over quantity. One undecided factor is whether to sell my headphone gears for additional speaker fund, but I think I?m going to keep them for late-night listening and other times when I can use speakers. I'm thinking of putting together a 2nd speaker rig (it might end up being an office rig). Either way I'd like to pair whatever speakers I get with an integrated tube amp preferably one that also has a decent headphone output. In terms of power needed anything 30W+ would be more than enough. I'd like to keep this under $1k if possible.

I've been having intermittent issues with my Moth Audio system that I was blaming on the amp until I recently discovered that one of them Cicada drivers is dead. Doug helped me troubleshoot and I found no short in the driver but it reads zero ohms. The other one shows 12 ohms as it should. Doug mentioned that someone much more skilled than I would be able to test it out more thoroughly, but I am not sure what the point would be unless it could be repaired. So, does anyone know of a source for Cicada drivers? Does anyone happen to have one or a pair even that they are not using and would be willing to sell?
