So a friend I know from work has a spare (I think) pair of these, and his wife is wanting less clutter in their place. (I get that.) He knows I'm into gear and audio and whatnot, and we've been talking for years about stuff. He asked me if I'd be interested in this pair, and we talked about trading something, perhaps. I think he'd be willing to take my pair of Senn 580/600 grill/650 cable for this pair of speakers. I've read some mostly-positive reviews, but, well, "internet reviewers" and all. It seems these were out at least around the turn of the century. I was looking at just getting some stands for the Wharfedale Diamond II bookshelf speakers I got at a thrift shop…

These should go well with my Arcam C31/P1 monoblocs... pity about the price, though. I'm currently running Acoustic Energy Aegis Two floorstanders. http://www.pmc-speakers.com/products/consumer/twenty/twenty26 I heard the older FB1i at a dealer paired with Arcam electronics and it was a great match. Initial reports from the Bristol show last weekend seem to be enthusiastic. I'll take mine in Amarone.

With the new tubes, the Rogue has been singing without any noise or static. I don't know what the age of the old tubes was or how many hours they have on them but don't care as it was probably one of them. The speakers and the amp were originally in my parent's home in a 15x21 room so heat was never really a concern. Currently my bedroom is 11x13 and having the amp on most of the day is starting to make the room quite warm. I am probably going to eat the cost of the new tubes and stick the amp on audiogon - as much as I love it, I can't stand the room getting that warm anymore. Any suggestions for a similar amp perhaps that doesn't release that much heat - open to ss or t…

I’ve just finished building an EUVL F5X amp and now I’m after a decent set of speakers for $3500 which is pretty much my limit. The amp is rated around 50 watt stereo in 8 ohms. Short listed these after a couple of days searching and racking my brain... Reference 3A MM De Capo BE Proac Response 2 Usher Tiny Dancer BE 718 I owned a pair of Reference 3A royal master controls around 16 years ago, I loved them with a SET 300b amp at the time. Proac and Usher I have no experience, just read some favourable reviews. Maybe the Usher is a bit power hungry.. I dunno. Any help appreciated.

I turned on the amp after about a week and a half of work being done on the house and attached is a short clip of what I heard. Recorded with the iPhone mic about 2 inches away from the driver but its a pretty close representation of the issue. 1. I turned it off after 10 minutes of warm up and it still making the same noise. 2. Turned it on again and let it warm up for 15 minutes. Still the same noise. Biased the tubes. Still the same noise. 3. The noise is equal in both channels from what I can tell. 4. The noise if constant with two different sources. 5. All tubes are lit except for 12ax7s. I don't see anything in them but I don't know if this…

Recently upgraded from YG Acoustics Carmels to YG Kipod Signature II speakers. Thought at first the BAT amps didn't have enough power, but it's settling in, and they are great together.

I noticed that Acoustic Energy finally released a floorstander model in their Reference Series. My pair of 12-year-old Aegis Two speakers (made in Malaysia) sound pretty good for super-cheap $200 speakers – it makes me wonder what they've done since then. Online reviews of the Reference 1 and the rarer Reference 2 seem pretty positive... has anybody heard them?

I have found myself once again looking at studio monitors to use on my desk (to replace the Audioengine A5 which replaced the Quad 12LA when they broke). I keep going back to Adam, Dynaudio, Focal... I noticed today that BH Photo has them for $750/pair right now. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/696917-REG/Dynaudio_Acoustics_BM_5A_MKII_BM_5A_MKII_7.html That seems like a very good price and I have wanted to try a pair of Dynaudio for a while. I am tempted to get them but I noticed they only have XLR input. Right now, I use the GS-1 as my volume control. I assume the sound, balanced, straight from the ECD-1 would be better but I am not so sure if using th…

Hi, I am looking for a set of cheap bookshelves/speakers that can take a digital input from my tv. I just got a new gt50 for the main viewing family room which has a decent sound bar. The g25 that was there went upstairs to the living room, and the stock speakers are real bad. Would love to just take the optical out from the tv, plug them in the speakers, and be done with it. I could have swore such a thing exists but I can't seem to find it. Thanks! If such a thing does not exist, i could also do a small box that would fit inside an entertainment furniture, that would be able to take a digital in, be an integrated amp of sorts, which could output into normal speakers…

I'm just about done building the Leach amplifier (~100Wrms / channel). I was hoping to get some suggestions for first speakers to match with it, probably in the price range $200-400. All I've got now are some no-name bookshelf speakers. Some floor-standers might be nice, but I really don't know too much about speakers. Thanks, Evan aka bperboy Here's one channel completed. I haven't finished building the other channel yet. Forgive the messy wiring; I will tidy it up nearer to the end of the project.

Thought I'd start a thread to discuss these fine (and other solid state) amps. I'm interested in some 100 watt or greater amps. I love reading the Pass DIY forums and seeing all the cool stuff Nelson comes up with. Unfortunately I have a love affair with pain in the butt to drive speakers so I am left with mostly their commercial offerings. My first question is what would be the big difference between an Aleph 2 and XA100.5 as far as sound goes? And about the XS150, has anyone heard them or have insights into their design? Do you think any of the Aleph or XA.5 amps can provide adequate voltage for V hungry electrostatic speakers, especially on very dynamic music?…

[This post is too long.] As you may know, one of my Quad 12L actives died. RIP. I have a pair of Audioengine A5 actives to use for now and maybe they will be good enough (I don't use speakers very much - usually headphones) for my limited desktop use. I was thinking that I wanted to get a pair of Adam A3X and I think this is probably what I might get if I went the studio monitor route. Then I remembered how much I liked the Ascend CMT-340 when I owned them (which I only sold because they were way too big and loud for nearfield listening). So I was thinking of going Parasound Zamp + Ascend CBM-170SE instead. (The Parasound ZDAC, Zamp and GS-1 would make a nic…

Any thoughts on these speakers? http://www.parts-express.com/pe/pshowdetl.cfm?&Partnumber=301-980&scqty=1 I'm working my way through Don Keele's papers and the original NRL publications and the theory and results are quite interesting and unique IMO, and the kit while not cheap looks like a great bargain for what you are getting. Not to mention it removes the biggest obstacle I have with DIY speakers: cabinet making. I attached the manual (10 MB), which is not only incredibly comprehensive with respect to the building process but also has lots of measurement and design information. 301-980-audio-artistry-inc-cbt36k-manual.pdf

I am curious about the new F series from Adam. They are supposed to be cheaper than the A series (and still front ported which is nice). http://www.adam-audi.../f5/description

I have a pair of AV123 X-SLS towers that are having issues. I am probably still going to try and fix them (and do something with them) but I never really liked them. They sound really dark and muddy. Oh well. They are fine for HT but I am thinking that maybe it is time to get some new speakers. I may also get a new center and surrounds (I have some crappy Cambridge Audio works stuff for that right now) now or later. The sub is also an AV123, is ok but it hums so it is off most of the time. I'll probably get a new sub at some point if needed. I assume that my center should match the mains as much as possible. Here is my setup: I will be using this mostly fo…

As I was setting up the New Marantz SR6005 receiver, I noticed that the sound coming out of the right front speaker was much lower than that of the left. I don't seem to be getting any sound out of the tweeter on that speaker. These aren't super great speakers (av123 X-SLS tower speakers) so I don't want to put much money into them. However, since I have spent a bit of money on audio stuff recently, I don't know what I want, I don't really want to get new speakers right now (eventually I will probably and get a full new 5.1 setup). Is there anyway I can check if the tweeter is blown? If so, could I get new tweeters (probably would need to get new tweeters for both so…

Has anyone heard of/heard these? They seem to be getting glowing reviews and look pretty interesting overall - powered sub w/ ribbon tweeter setup. Also not that expensive, at $3k for a pair of the triton two's. http://www.goldenear.com/products/triton-towers

I decided to get some decent set of nearfield speakers to have on the desk next to the wall and I was thinking in something like the Audio engine A5 or Adam A5x. Don't know if I can get better for the money, what do you guys suggest?

Hey guys, Looking for a pair of monitors to pair up with a Pass Labs X250. Details is the priority but a tidbit of warmth is ok with me, hence the Pass amp. A big plus if the speakers come in a white finish; budget is around 3K. Appreciate any suggestions. Thanks in advance.

Not sure if this is the right forum, so I apologizes in advance if it's not. I'm in the market to upgrade my old HT receiver, a 5 year old HK something or other. It was bought for around $500 so it's quality is probably not quite up to par with some of the bigger boys. I'm also interested in some of that new fangled room correction technology, as my living room is not completely conducive to good sound quality (cathedral ceilings...). Does anyone have any opinions on Anthem, Integra, or Pioneer Elite gear? I'm looking to spend around $2k and will probably go hear a few of these this weekend. Is there anything else I should be looking at? Separates would be awe…
