  2. Went for a lovely hour ride today. Took this in front of the George Washington Masonic Monument. I am slow but it feels great to get out.

  3. Well it turns out that as one would expect the HDMI extension cable and active USB I put in to be able to do Room VR later this year works great with the TV so I'm in for whatever games on PC including FPS. That said my preference is racing games.

  4. ^ I thought about it. But the fact that it is good scared me, so I'm avoiding it... for now. Other areas of my life need attending.

  6. O2 has gain of 10db max electrostatic amps have gain in the range 54 to 60 db pick absolutely the most noise free input fet or bipolar you want, and you can't get to those noise numbers at 54db of gain even pumped liquid helium devices used in nmr cryoprobes (costing about $500k these days) have more noise than this. I have 2 of these and a lot of experience with the parts inside. the dscope as well as audio precision and every other digital computerized thd meter have maximum voltage input limits. So the question is whether they used an input attenuator to generate that, and in any case what the input impedance the amplifier really sees. Because even at 100k input impedance, the meter has a much lower impedance than the headphones would have at 1khz. Measuring this accurately is very hard. Generating bullshit numbers is easy. Every one of the ss amps i have built has a thd of less than .01% with an appropriate 10x attenuator running 95% voltage swing

  8. That is what we used to use at Wharfedale. Actually it was speckle interferometry, which is what you have to use to map the resonances in rough surfaces. In the mid/late 1980's. Dunno what if anything they use now.

  9. Seeing your bike is enough to get me back out on the road. For the time being I am trying to pick up a gravel bike for some great crushed gravel trails I have in my neighborhood. Looking at some Cyclocross bikes and some gravel bikes ranging from a low end Diamondback w/ Ultegra Diamondback to a Niner Cyclocross CC or Gravel Gravel or a Pivot w/ Ultegra Pivot Just looking for something basic so I am leaning towards the super cheap Diamondback, but the others appeal more to my snobbiness. :-)

  10. I sunk about 10 hours in to Civ 6 this weekend. The new systems (there are a ton!) seem to be well thought out and the game looks and runs great. It is a ton to take in, and I figure it will take a couple of play throughs to really figure out how things work. There is a tutorial that is pretty decent, but it only scratches the surface on what is a very complex game. The AI badly needs a patch or two. I'm winning very easily on my first play through as Teddy Roosevelt on "prince" difficulty. The AI seems to have a bad habit of starting wars it has no chance of winning. Rather than crush me in the early game when they had huge armies and I was weak, the two AI players on my continent (the Spanish and the Aztecs) waited until the mid-game when I was much further down the tech-tree than they were and able to produce vastly superior units. After surviving their initial onslaught, I didn't have much trouble fending them off, turning the tables, and wiping them off the map. Despite its flaws the game is painfully addictive. As things currently stand around the year 1800 the stupid Germans are trying to invade my continent with their missionaries and aposteles and spread their heathen religion. I just declared Jihad on them (holy war) so they will soon see the error of their ways.

  13. If we set up regular evenings I will join in other than if I have date nights etc. I am flexible as to game. Edit: it appears Bf1 is not cross platform multiplayer so I would say it's a no-go for me right now. I don't want to have to lug my gaming pc over to the TV or play on a virtual big screen. I may be able to get the hdmi extension to reach though....

  17. Here's the larger controller board up and running The motor works. I haven't tested the IR yet, but it's pretty straight forward. I've got a bunch of programming to do to get the IR/motor going.

  21. So chatted with JH audio and they are positive that their iem cable will work, so order placed. Now I am thinking of JH13 or JH16.... ha ha Last I remembered some people had fit issues and also the earphones will break frequently? Is this recollection accurate?

  22. Took some time today to set the Fanatec system up. Is anyone still doing this racing crap, besides Brent? Still can't find the missing part for my headset, but I have the crappy ones still.

  25. Tyll is the last person I'd accuse of selling out. He's one of the few reviewers I read and listen to. Having said that, I often don't hear things the way he does. But that's fine. Use honest, educated opinions like Tyll's, use your own ears, use whatever metrics and science you know, and put all of that together to guess if something is for you or not. Changing your mind in this hobby is a pain in the ass. The internet remembers everything you say and nobody realizes that the situation in the real world always changes. So if you say A and a few years later you say B, people will assume you either sold out or have no idea what you're talking about, when in truth you're just being honest about things as you see them at the moment. It's one of the reasons why I don't post about headphones much anymore. But then again I have nothing to post anyway, though 10 years ago, that didn't stop me.
