Fun day! I think there is something in the air tonight. Just listening to Jethro Tull through the Gungnir / T2 / 007 Mk 1 Very nice7 points

Why does this remind me of the Engineer 's bike joke? Two engineering students, Bob and Ed, are riding their bikes. Bob says to Ed, "That's a nice bike; is it new?" Ed replies, "Well, that's an interesting story. I was walking on campus the other day, and a beautiful woman rides up to me, gets off her bike and puts it on down, takes off all of her clothes and throws them down, and says 'Take what you want.'" Bob says to Ed, "Good choice; the clothes wouldn't have fit you anyway."4 points

Look, I'm no expert when it comes to women and signals but if you have to spend more than a few seconds pondering the meaning of that action, I'm guessing you're not getting laid much. o·vert ōˈvərt,ˈōvərt/ adjective done or shown openly; plainly or readily apparent, not secret or hidden. "an overt act of aggression" synonyms: undisguised, unconcealed, plain (to see), clear, apparent, conspicuous, obvious, noticeable, manifest, patent, open, blatant "an overt attempt to sidestep the truth"4 points

@P3t4: You generally mount boards on standoffs. You will need to drill the case, and heatsinks, to do this. Alternatively, make a CAD file and have a machine shop do that for you. Front Panel Express does this well and even provides a simple CAD program for doing this. Rather expensive, though. Modushop cases come only with the screws necessary to assemble them. You can also get a case at Cam Expert who I believe can also do customizations, but no idea about prices or heatsink availability. McMaster-Carr carries a wide selection of mounting hardware (and a million other things). For wire, I buy PTFE 600V-rated spools from Bulk Wire. Good for most builds. On that subject, though, do you know how to safely work with high-voltage electricity? You must have a grasp of safety technique. If you short-circuit one of these power supplies while touching a rail, it can stop your heart. That's why I suggested you start with a Dynalo+GRLV. You'll have to solve similar construction and wiring problems, but the circuit is much safer to work with.3 points

That's too bad, Shelly, but glad you found out now rather than after.3 points

Finished up the separate "Universal" PS that will be used to power my GG. Maybe try it with a Carbon later. Burgers. I derped when making the buns, but they still tasted good. I need to use my grinder more often, the fresh beef was delicious. https://imgur.com/a/og41c2 points

Thanks for all the well wishes. I had a lovely trip to Bristol and Bath with my gf. She had never been to the UK before so it was a lot of fun to see her respond to the "english" spoken there...1 point

Yo we had important things to discuss before we left, like the T2 and Carbon. #trueheadphonenerds1 point

@Shelly - sorry to hear about the place. A good inspector that works for you is worth their weight in gold. Our inspector saw two, tiny, old, cut pipes barely coming into a dark corner of our cellar, near where the inside oil tank currently resides. This triggered an underground scan of the driveway just outside cellar wall, which discovered a huge underground oil tank. The inside oil tank conversion was done prior to the last owners who had lived there for ten years, and they claimed no knowledge until the scan. Long story still long, they paid for the old tank removal, soil testing (sale contingent upon not needing further remediation), & repaving. I am a firm believer that the right home appears when it is right for you though, so you have the right attitude. Good luck with the continued search, and have fun with it. @mypasswordis - so a woman was licking the window outside your diner booth, and y'all post a selfie???!!!!! #trueheadphonenerds1 point

Hmmm, university student(?) and still spoon fed? This thread is 45 pages. Read them. If the content of that doesn't answer your previous post, then there are other threads showing builds, etc. Your previous post doesn't elicit confidence in you making a successful build1 point

That's too bad, Shelly. When we had the inspection done on our house, the inspector was literally laughing during the process. He thought nobody would be dumb enough to buy a house that needed so much work. But he had not met the likes of us! We managed to get the seller to do $35K worth or maintenance - basically everything significant mentioned in the report. I think the agents on both sides were shocked that he agreed to it.1 point

Bummer Shelly, but like you said, there's literally another one around the corner.1 point

Q27 and Q30 have base and collector connected together and so behave like diodes and in series with the LEDs D2 and D3, provide a constant voltage for the constant current sources Q26, Q28 and Q29. I believe that Q18-21 form a modified Vbe multiplier - this part of the circuit is not new - the exact same topology is seen in the T1, 600 and 727, among others. The circuitry around Q31-33 is a voltage regulator to stabilize the voltage to the tubes and intermediate stage. I'm sure KG will come along and correct me if necessary.1 point

q19 and q21 are in all stax amps. limits the voltage of that particular section, they never trigger, and I eliminated them a long time ago. q27 and q30 are used as temperature matched diodes. same as Q8 which is mounted on the heatsink the 300k resistors result in a voltage gain of 1k (actually a bit more) when combined with r38,r39. carbon does the same thing with lower resistances they use stacked ksa1156, a pair of 400v parts. I use the stn9360 which is a single 600v part. there is no reason to do this in solid state front end amp because the 100v is 15v main power supplys are not regulated. and the servo jumps all over the place when the air conditioning kicks in.1 point
-
simplified schematic just updated, I got the current sources flipped. when put in the test position, it puts fixed resistors to the plates of the tubes to -15 so then you adjust the main offset and differential. then move back to the on position and further adjust the servo pots. when working right, keeps the outputs to less than 100mv. but range is very tight.1 point

Hard to choose between my speakers or the amp, but I remain pretty confident 2.5 years later that the M22 is the best piece of gear I've ever owned.1 point
-
And maybe move the speakers a few feet away from the back wall too if possible.1 point
-
Very nice addition to a retro-cool system. I would think that a little more spread on those speakers would be an improvement in stereo imaging though.1 point
-
Thanks for all the great info. in the previous comments. I just purchased an M-22 a short while ago and did a fairly extensive rebuild myself. I replaced all the Electrolytic Caps and burnished the contacts on all the relays. During the process I accidentally popped/shorted one of the output transistors and had to source a replacement. Once I got the replacement, I re-seated all the main transistors and added new thermal compound and adjusted the idle current and output. The power section of one of the boards gets quite hot so I replaced the Diodes and Ceramic caps there leaving additional space for air flow. Lastly, I added larger rubber mounting feet for air flow and cable routing.1 point

I call it Three Rib-Eye Pie. In truth, I just seasoned them this way and then grilled them. I was hungry and had people waiting so I didn't take after pics. Tasty, though.1 point
