September 6, 20178 yr Wow, I was wondering what your sad face in the "listening now" thread meant.... RIP, one of the pioneers!
September 15, 20178 yr Fuck.....Grant Hart, ex of of Husker Du https://www.nytimes.com/2017/09/14/arts/music/grant-hart-husker-du-drummer-dies.html?mcubz=1 I always wished he and Bob Mould could have worked together more, so much great stuff came from that band. And.....Fuck Cancer.....
September 15, 20178 yr RIP Grant. Fuck the fuck out of cancer. Seeing Bob Mould in a few weeks at Hardly Strictly. Gotta play some Hüsker Dü in the meantime. Here are Bob's words from FB yesterday : It was the Fall of 1978. I was attending Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota. One block from my dormitory was a tiny store called Cheapo Records. There was a PA system set up near the front door blaring punk rock. I went inside and ended up hanging out with the only person in the shop. His name was Grant Hart. The next nine years of my life was spent side-by-side with Grant. We made amazing music together. We (almost) always agreed on how to present our collective work to the world. When we fought about the details, it was because we both cared. The band was our life. It was an amazing decade. We stopped working together in January 1988. We went on to solo careers, fronting our own bands, finding different ways to tell our individual stories. We stayed in contact over the next 29 years — sometimes peaceful, sometimes difficult, sometimes through go-betweens. For better or worse, that’s how it was, and occasionally that’s what it is when two people care deeply about everything they built together. The tragic news of Grant’s passing was not unexpected to me. My deepest condolences and thoughts to Grant’s family, friends, and fans around the world. Grant Hart was a gifted visual artist, a wonderful story teller, and a frighteningly talented musician. Everyone touched by his spirit will always remember. Godspeed, Grant. I miss you. Be with the angels.
September 16, 20178 yr Harry Dean Stanton. https://www.nbcnews.com/pop-culture/movies/actor-harry-dean-stanton-known-repo-man-others-dies-91-n801871
September 16, 20178 yr Oh, man, another strike to the heart....RIP Harry Dean Stanton.....agree, Jacob, a legend. 91 years is better than 56.......
September 16, 20178 yr Yeah - RIP Mr Stanton. Another one, which won't be commonly known, is Nikolaas Bloembergen. He was one of the pioneers of non-linear optics, which was one of the topics of my research degree. In fact he was one of three recipients of the Nobel prize for Physics in 1981. I'd kind of lost track of the years, because he got to the fine old age of 97 (which means that he was younger than I am now when I was at University; which is very sobering). http://physicsworld.com/cws/article/news/2017/sep/12/laser-spectroscopy-pioneer-nicolaas-bloembergen-dies-at-97
September 19, 20178 yr Another one which isn't commonly known, but I heard this story because cold war tensions with the Soviet Union was a thing with my dad: Stanislav Petrov http://www.iflscience.com/technology/man-saved-world-1983-nuclear-catastrophe-just-died/
September 19, 20178 yr I had heard of the Petrov story, but not the details around....RIP, hope someone like him is still around!

If you are interested in nuclear insanity, I strongly recommend The Head Hand. https://www.amazon.com/Dead-Hand-Untold-Dangerous-Legacy/dp/0307387844
September 19, 20178 yr Also I just watched this on Netflix - American-Experience-Command-Control pretty good tale about an oops RIP Stanton and Petrov
September 22, 20178 yr RIP Petrov - the man whose calm action saved us all from Armageddon. Another cold war movie worth watching is By Dawn's Early Light.
September 23, 20178 yr Thanks Craig for this, otherwise I had never known. Stupid times then, stupid times now, I guess we have to blame the humans...
September 23, 20178 yr Harry Dean Stanton has been one of my favorite character actors. I can remember him in all the tv westerns like Gunsmoke and The Rifleman. Paris Texas was a big one and when he sang Borderline with Ry Cooder I found a new dimension to him. RIP
September 23, 20178 yr ^ it was really nice to see HDS in the new season of Twin Peaks as well. Sadly so many of the older actors/actressess that were in that season have since passed. HDS Catherine Coulson - The Log Lady Miguel Ferrer RIP to all of them.
September 24, 20178 yr Charles Bradley -- also of Daptone Records (Sharon Jones was late 2016, I think, although it still feels recent)
September 25, 20178 yr John Ashbery, noted American poet. https://www.nytimes.com/2017/09/03/arts/john-ashbery-dead-prize-winning-poet.html? One of his finest works, I think, reproduced here in light of current trends.
September 28, 20178 yr RIP Hugh Hefner, you know, for the articles. http://www.npr.org/2017/09/27/531884820/-playboy-founder-hugh-hefner-who-championed-free-speech-and-smut-dies-at-xx
