So, one of the main reasons I finally joined Head-Case (after reading here and the other place for ages) was that my friend asked me to help him find an IEM. He's got a Christmas bonus and wants to spend a portion on an IEM that'll improve his bus ride into work. I'm wholly ignorant to portable audio (Barring my PX100 and XM5, which I only have because they're "transportable" with my laptop.) and thusly can't really make any good recommendations. I came here because I don't want to be recommended whatever the flavor of the month is and then be told it's junk a month later. I've heard both but not at the same time and the times were too far apart, hence my own experience fails. Anyone else heard these and compared them? Normally I'd just go ahead and buy an SA5000 to find out but funds are running pretty low for me right now, was wondering how much percentage of the Qualia the SA5000 offers. I love the Qualia but it's an awful lot of money to keep to one headphone.

So my bro wants IEMs between 200 and 300 bucks that have substantial amounts of bass. I'm not necessarily talking about the tight, coherent bass that many of us like, but rather the bloated one-note bass that the kids seem to love so much. As a point of reference, he liked the super.Fi 5 EB, but they're too bid for his taste. Whaddya think?

I'm finally in the market for some new headphones, and I think I've got it narrowed down. I'm looking at either Audio Technica's W1000 headphonse or their AD1000PRM headphones. The only difference I know is that the W1000s are slightly more expensive and are closed rather than open. What I don't know is whether the headphones being closed is a bad thing in terms of sound accuracy... since sometimes it seems that can cripple a pair of cans. I have the K701s and i'd read on this forum that there are some with 2 foam pad layers and some with one. I was wondering if there might be any way to tell which one I have without tinkering, using the serial number or something (I don't want to tinker for fear of irreversible damage)

OK my previous thread rambling about HD650/580 was in essence about burning out a bit and cynicism creeping in with respect to this hobby (ie, is it worth it...). Why not combine the two? Not particularly useful. sounds about the same as the silicone, but a whole lot more comfortable, and a bit less isolating. That is all.

So after two long years of service, the cable above the left ear bud of my E500's has cracked. Because it is outside the two year limited warranty, I was wondering if it would be worth looking for someone to recable them or to send them to sure and pay for the repair. For anyone who has sent their 'phones into Shure beyond the 2 year mark... did you have to pay a $145 service fee as listed on their website? (http://www.shure.com/stellent/groups/public/@gms_gmi_web_us_pa/documents/web_resource/us_pa_doc_service_fees.pdf) Or is it likely that the repair or switch (by most accounts that's what they do) will cost less than that?

Have been drooling for years over a Sony MDR-R10 (bit of a Sony vintage gear fan), but there is no way I could afford it back in the '90, and still can't at the prices these go for nowadays. Hello my fellow HCers, I had the MDR-CD3000 and ATH-W11JPN side by side for about 2 weeks so I thought I’d do a mini review/impressions thread for you guys. Its more towards a CD3000 though. I have owned the W11jpn for a couple of months now and have purchased the CD3000 recently. Gears used with the headphones are my Creative MoVo2FM 5GB, early ‘90s vintage(?) Samsung Z98G CDP, MicroShar u107B amp and some silver and copper interconnects. My iBasso D1 is out for repairs, so I had no chance to test with it. It will be back in a few days time though. I was leafing through some mags at the central library a few days ago when I saw a headphone review in one of the British mags. I had my camera with me so I snapped pictures of the more interesting reviews; these being the Ultrasone 750, Denon D5000, and Grado RS-2. Download, enjoy, have fun.

I just go these today, and overall I'm very impressed: they sound really good for their price. They don't have the technical abilities of other high-end phones, but they do no nothing wrong, have a very involving midrange, and an intimate soundstage. I do wish that their earpads are bigger/deeper, as their shallowness make them not really circumaural to my ears. But what surprised me the most was how hard they are to drive. I had to turn my Lavry up past where I usually listen at for the HD650s. I can't wait to hear them out of my soon-coming Dynahi.

Hello everyone, This is my very first post in this forum I discovered very recently, and I can see many of you already do post on head-fi.
