Grok Headphones in Fullness

  1. The shure se530's came in today. Was able to play with them a good chunk of time due to no school. I mainly was using my moth si2a3/45H with meridian as I am still waiting on my new 6g ipod to come in. The fit is excellent to my ears, nice and easy to insert, stays in place, and all the tips work just fine. I would say the triple flange is really awkward and I probably won't bother with it anymore because it places it too far out the ear. I tried the small rubber ones and the medium sized olive foam I believe, those are the ones I like so far. The olive foam though seems to fit in more snug and seems to isolate much better, though the smaller rubber tips go in and…

I posted this on head-fi, too, since so far as I know these haven't been discussed over there by anyone who's heard them, but, you know, I'd prefer to have a discussion about them here. I haven't seen many posts about the SRH750DJ, but I bought them just a few days ago. They're really fantastic for the money. A little background: I recently sold my Edition 9 and will likely be ordering a JH13 or JH16 within a month or two. In the interim, I was planning to rely on my HD25s, but my car was broken into a month or so ago and the headphones were stolen along with my GPS. I wasn't going to buy a pair of headphones for just a few months of use, but I did want have a backup…

I just got a pair of these. I'm not real familiar with everything that's out there in the sub-$200 range, so I can't comment on the "are they the best $200 closed back phones ever" business. But I think they're pretty good. I was looking for not-too-expensive closed back cans for my portable. Basically, they're right at home there. They do everything pretty well. My RSA Tomahawk drives 'em with ease. They're not over bright (My ears. I'm allergic to bright, so I assume that means they're really not bright. But you never know.) They're nicer across the midrange with a Mogami Mini-Quad cable (said cable being a lot less of a pain in the ass then the coiled one that co…

For those who missed it (either on gadget news sites or Head-Fi), Shure has updated their lineup. http://www.engadget.com/2007/01/06/shure-shows-off-its-new-se210-se310-se420-and-se530-earphones/ Meh, nothing special though.

  5. Well after one to many "nice warnings" about what i want my Dj to do at my place it seems i need to give him a night off to let him know whats up. i have done this dj crap for a few years strait so i am confident in which i can easily do the job, then again we are talking about someone playing off his imac from itunes most of his paid time.. My gear of choice is going to be the Numark idj2 mostly cause i have somuch music already done in lossless on my ipod now (thanks to Benchmark for proving the capabilities of a computer setup). of course i am converting all my lossless files into 128 mp3s cause the idj2 does not play lossless and plus the 128's are going to be used…

I've been in a state of bliss over the last week since getting my HD650s with the Headroom Balanced Amp. I'd forgotten how much fun it could be to listen to music. I'm so happy that I just spent $5,000 on a CD player, which has convinced my friends that I've gone over the edge. And then it happened... I noticed a really persistent ringing in my ears. Like 12 hours long. I've tried to be really easy on the volume, but it seems like the headphones don't "come alive" until they hit a certain sweet spot, which may be a little more loud than my ears should be listening to. A question for long time listeners--am I going to have to spend the next 10 years keeping the volum…

  11. ...brand new HD595. The headband ony my HD580 cracked. It was one of those refurbs that I got off amazon for really cheap. Sennheiser customer service was super nice the entire time on the phone- I spoke to two really helpful reps. Took them about 2 weeks to get them here. Now I'm sort of confused what to do, and it doesn't help that I just opened the parcel now, and I'm a little drunk. I was using the HD580 for late night TV and DVD watching on my laptop. So now I'm sort of in a pizzle. I could call up Sennheiser and -ask them why they replaced my Hd580 with a 595 -keep the 595 -ask for a 600, since it seems the 580 is done for good (this is what the re…

  12. Followed both topics where these headphones are trashed. So given that, what would be a good pair of portable (as in not massive sized), reasonably isolating bass emphasised phones around that same price range? The only other phone I've stumbled upon that fits into that category is the ATH-ESW9s and they don't supposedly isolate well, and cost a fortune. The MS2s/325is are said to be more balanced but still with loads of bass, yet they're not closed either and have an even more narrow soundstage than the Denons or Ultrasones supposedly ... ^^ (this is all based on hear-say of course ... )

I just bought a pair and love them. I know that they aren't liked very much around here but can't for the life of me figure out why?

  14. It's probably no surprise to some of you that these are some of my favorite headphones (when properly damped and housed). I'd like to hear the impressions of others that have heard these unique drivers.

  15. I've had my eye on these for the last year or so but waiting for a cheap set to come up. There are three versions they sell and I found the cheapest one for sale, brand new in the box with the transformer adapter. I'll take some pics of the system tomorrow (shortest day of the year here so... yeah not great for photos) but I've at least a pic of the headphones and the internals of the transformer box. Here they are and I quite like the looks and the build quality. They are using mini XLR's which is not ok but questionable connector choices are a theme here. The stock cable is beyond crap (more on that tomorrow) so I'm using a Stax PC-OCC off my RR-1's. Th…

Guys, I may be in the market for some headphones. Knowing next to nothing about what's out there, I could use suggestions. Basically, I own two sets of phones. Etymotic 4p's that I bought in 2001 or 2002, and RS-1's I bought in 2003. I use the ety's when I am on airplanes, and that's about it. They are kind of OK, but the banging cord is too annoying. I love the RS-1's -- enough that I haven't really thought about buying anything else for almost 6 years. But, I need some office phones. I am looking for $200 or less. Used is fine but they need to be findable quickly. Open is OK, but the Grados probably leak too much sound. Other things -- punchy (Grado-esque) bass …

...and I get the urge to try something better. They need to be single-ended and will be driven by a WA2. Tesla T1's? LCD-2's? HD800's? I have no clue which ones will play nicely with this amp, but I'm really after something that will be a bit more fun to listen to without sacrificing details and resolution. In technical terms, this probably means low end frequencies that don't fall off as much as the 650's (that's one of my main gripe's). I have no clue though, as I'm not nearly as technical as the large majority of people here, however I do know what I like and dislike. I love the HD-650's but have the urge to try something different. Commence ball busting, I'…

  21. In the "Measurements" thread, everyone could see that top-tier electrostatic and isodynamic headphones are more similar than different, having similar FR, CSD, square wave and impulse responces, isodynamics sometimes having better measured parameters. However, their sound is not the same. I have thought of 3 moments that seem to make difference between them. I must warn everyone from the start that I'm no specialist in these areas and everything below is wild speculation. 1) Air resistance and open area. ES drivers use very thin stator plates with high open area - more than 50%, it seems. There is minimum amount of trapped air and minimum stored energy. Isodynami…

  22. Started by wink,

http://www.sonicsense.com/blog I tried some different comparisons on this site. The AKG K702 vs Sennheiser HD650 was definitely revealing. They use a you-tube like linkand they play excerpts of the reference track and the headphone reproduction as recorded from their dummy head alternately. The 3 I listened to were The AKG K702 vs Sennheiser HD650, The Ultrasone ED8 vs Fostex TH900, and The AKG K812 vs Beyerdynamic T1 vs Ultrasone ED10 vs Sennheiser HD800. As I was using one of my HD600's that was connected to my computer, I found that in the first one the HD650 part sounded quite noticeably laid back compared to the reference portion of the compar…

  25. Started by deepak,

I've put around 6 or 7 hours on these so far. They're much, much better than when I last heard them. -the treble isn't as tipped up as I remember (still on jazz that extends really high, it gets a little fatiguing) -bass extension is not very good (audible at 30 Hz, very good down to 40 Hz) -HF extension is good (~18 Khz) -bass impact is an enigma. On certain albums it has a lot, other times you just hear the bass and it's not remotely palpable -some funkiness going on in the midrange, almost like the upper midrange is slightly recessed -soundstage can't figure this one out...the headstage is pretty small. But the drivers are angled towards your ears... -imagi…
