Grok Headphones in Fullness

  1. Started by Rossliew,

Anyone tried the L700 with any of the KGSSHV/KGST/BHSE amps? Wonder if it will sound moar awesome as compared to just driving them with a Stax amp..

  2. Started by bralk,

I have the L700 MkII and I find the headband pressure too high. I wonder if the original L700 headband would lessen the pressure as the “arm” of the forks are a straight construction without the bend at the bottom in the MkII model. Any “swithers” between the too models heamdband ?

  4. Started by Jon L,

All this time, I never bothered to take off the earpad, but once I did, I found TWO layers of substantial foam between the driver and the mesh. My camera is MIA, but one is a round piece of foam, and the other is another round piece with a small hole in the middle. These are what gives K701 that strange sensation of detailed yet kind of detached sound b/c once you take the foams out, K701 almost approaches the immediacy of high-end Grado's. Taking both foams out was a bit to much and stark, and I wouldn't recommend it unless your setup is quite dark and distant. But just taking out the foam with the hole has left me with a nice balance in my own setup; of cours…

It has been a very long time since I've been in the market for a semi-full sized, closed headphone. The last one I had was the AKG K81DJ. I liked that pair of cans well enough, except for the comfort: they pinched my ears like no other, and I can't wear them for more than half an hour without feeling discomfort. From what I've gathered, people here like the ATH-ESW9 for a semi-full sized closed headphone. The fact that they are supposed to sound decent straight out of an iPod also makes them appealing. However, I still have concerns about comfort. I have big ears that are long but not wide. So most headphones end up pinching my the top and bottom of my earlobes, and …

  6. The price is not yet a problem so I have no price range restriction, although I don't want something over 1000$... if you know what I mean. I want my headphones to be completely wireless (no wire, no usb dungle, no dock station). I want to be able to lay in my bed or walk into the house without the laptop with me (especially for Google/Skype Phone Calls) (this let me conclude that any IR (infra red) wouldn't be suitable since they require the headphones to be in sight of the IR signal transmitter to communicate. I will be using these both for phone call and listening to music as long as playing so games (so It requires a Mic for the phones calls and must have some decent …

My name is Jesse Milstead of Lackey high school and my engineering team and I are desiging/creating a tracesable arrow using both a knock that lights up and a very small speaker. The speaker part is what i need your help with, we need a speaker 3mm or smaller and it doesnt matter how long it is. But the smaller the better in this case since we need to not mess with balance of the arrow as much as possible. Thanks, Jesse and JCD Engineering

  9. Hi guys, any of you own both? Or have you heard them side by side in a good setup? I currently have the W11jpn, and I am 100% sure of owning the L3000 in the near future (couple of months time). The thing is, I kinda have my eyes on something right now and I was wondering if I should sell the W11jpn to finance that purchase since I'm gonna need some quick $. To rephrase, is the L3000 different enough from the W11jpn to justify owning them both? Any of you miss owning the W11jpn after getting a pair of L3000? I'm generally happy with the W11jpn, but it could use a tad more punch and speed in the bass dept. and a little more detail won't hurt either. As noted below, t…

  11. I currently have two R10's which sound a bit different from each other. I'm trying to decide which one to send to SinglePower for a balanced recable. Mikhail told me he has recabled several R10's before, while I've never read about any other companies who have done so. Actually, there isn't much info about balanced R10's at all. I intend to keep one stock so I can compare it with the balanced recabled one. One has less bass but a better midrange and larger soundstage. Which one should be recabled, the one with less bass or the one with more bass? No poll option, or am I stupid again?

  12. Started by Dreadhead,

Today I finally made my fake ear (block of modeling foam with a hole) for my measurement microphone and hooked it up to my digital equalizer. It's bloody cool, you put the heaphones on the ear and run the auto eq (automatic algorithm using pink noise and a RTA) and you've got pitch flat response I know for a fact it would drive many nuts but to be honest I'm having a great time. The only boring thing is that it makes d5000s sound like sa5000s or whatever sound like whatever (as long as both are equalized). Anyway I look forward to trying this out with other phones too. It'll be interesting to see how much correction is required. For the d5000 it's a lot down low an…

  13. Started by aerius,

I've had a couple weeks or so to get used to my RS-1, so far I'm really happy with it and it has for the most part replaced my heavily modified K340 as my main headphone. I guess I'll give a summary of the larger differences for now and then go on to cover other things. Headroom: The RS-1 can play a hell of a lot louder without sounding strained. If I push my K340 it'll start sounding a little plasticky and echoey, and if I want to play Slayer at earbleed volumes it goes to crap. The colourations get really bad, the soundstage mushes into a shitty blob, and it sounds very compressed and strained. The RS-1 just keeps getting louder until my ears hurt. The treble gets a…

  14. Started by mrarroyo,

I was just informed by Alex that the right driver on my K1000 is "kaputz". The serial number is 6191 and I would like to know if anyone here has a K1000 with only one driver working and would be wiling to sell it "as is". As you can imagine my idea would be to make one working K1000 out of the two. Ideally your K1000 should be a mid production unit, hopefully with a serial number in the 5000 to 7000 range. Sure would appreciate hearing from someone. HELP! Thanks.

  15. Started by Chimpie,

Hi guys, I've got an AKG K1000 at Alex. I bought it second hand from HeadFi, but unfortunatelt one of the drivers is not working properly. So I'll need to find a new pair of drivers! Any idea whether AKG can still provide them? I've tried mailing them, no response yet. I'll give them a call later this week, but if you guys can confirm they don't have it in stock anymore, I won't bother and save the telephone costs (I live in the Netherlands). One other guy at AKG told me I would need new printed boards as well, if I own an older system. Anyone heard about this?? Thanks for the help, guys! PS: Talked to Craig and he's working on a hybrid class a amp for the K1…

  17. Started by justaquestion,

Ok, I need help buying some headphones as I am undecided on which ones I should buy. I would like some headphones (pref.) under ~$400 USD. I will be listening to music (mostly) from my iPhone 4 or Mac. But I also have a high-end Vinyl player, and a Les Paul (which I can plug in my headphones). Those two might be considered audiophile but that is not the primary use (though I will use them) of my headphones, so I don't know if I should get audiophile headphones. I will be listening mostly to Classic Rock/Rock. Pink Floyd (Dark Side of the Moon), Led Zep, etc. I really like listening to high quality music, but not sure if the headphones would make a big difference sin…

  19. I've had my eye on these for the last year or so but waiting for a cheap set to come up. There are three versions they sell and I found the cheapest one for sale, brand new in the box with the transformer adapter. I'll take some pics of the system tomorrow (shortest day of the year here so... yeah not great for photos) but I've at least a pic of the headphones and the internals of the transformer box. Here they are and I quite like the looks and the build quality. They are using mini XLR's which is not ok but questionable connector choices are a theme here. The stock cable is beyond crap (more on that tomorrow) so I'm using a Stax PC-OCC off my RR-1's. Th…

Not quite sure where this belongs, so mods feel free to move this thread. So, me being me, I'm usually a little late to the party. I was in Best Buy today and came across the Boze frames, Bluetooth sunglasses. I listened to them and can really see a use for these when I'm away from home. The sound was certainly adequate for non critical listening, with the advantage of being able to hear voices, sirens etc... Does anyone own these? Would it be easy to adapt to Alexa? Are their better brands for the money? Style is somewhat important and I do like the rondo style, and the availability of accessory colored lenses, or even prescription lenses. Thoughts, impressions…

  24. Started by Elephas,

I'm listening to the Qualia 010 for the first time (thanks darkless!). I'm amazed by its details and resolution. I thought that dynamics were generally inferior to electrostatics in this category. The recabled L3000, recabled W5000, recabled PS-1 and SA5000 are very good, but I didn't think they were competitive vs. the HE90, HE60, SR-Omega, SR-007 and 4070. The R10 is the only one that can compete, but even so I don't think it matches the electrostats' speed and microdetails. I'm hopeful better amplification will help the R10 and other dynamics. The Qualia 010 sounds like an electrostatic. I'm only driving it with the AT-HA5000 for now. It is already one of my top fav…

  25. Started by Bob_McBob,

My last rig was a CIA VDA-1/VAC-1, SP Extreme, and RS-1s. I sold it all last year, so I've been away from headphones for a little while. I now have a balanced B22 on the way from thrice and a minidac USB from grawk in a week, but I haven't been able to decide on headphones. All the nice headphones I've owned are Grados. MS-1, HF-1, and RS-1. I am pretty happy with the Grado sound, and really like the RS-1s, but I found they gave me low level tinnitus really easily. I'll probably eventually get a pair, but I'd like to try something different this time. I've been seriously considering HD650s, but opinions of them vary so much it's hard to tell anything. I don't have t…
