So I just bought some Iron Lung Jellyfish Power cables, an improvement from the stock stuff on my amp and DAC. But I was wondering if having a fairly cheap power strip (an absolute necessity in my dorm room) would negate the effect of the better power cables? I don't really know much about electronics, cables, or anything that has to do with anything in my entire audio set-up... so some good input would be much appreciated. Alternatively, do any of you think that I just wasted my money on the power cables and that they won't make a noticeable difference in sound quality? I'd be interested if that's what you thought as well.

At the risk of being lined up against a wall.... do Power Conditioners work for anyone in a typical high end headphone setup? I have a (small) amount of low level periodic but irritating static going on in my amp, and was wondering if these power line devises actually work. I live in a city and no doubt the mains is as dirty as hell! If anyone could recommend an affordable unit for 220-240v. Or tell me I am an idiot, Either is fine.

I like free stuff, so was sad to learn about the Virtual Dynamics power cord give-away after it was over. I emailed them today, just to see, and got a rather friendly response from some guy named Rick who said he was feeling generous. Nice. Too bad they're probably sending it to someone who won't be able to hear a difference, but I'll give it a go at least. Right now I've got two different Cardas on my amps, and a PS Audio on my source. They've been on "indifinite loan" from agile_one since I got the amps and CDP, since they didn't come with power cords. I don't know what others sound like, so this should be interesting...I hope. Anyway, I like free stuff. Good free stuff…

I'm a bit loathe to post this, but I have had some interesting and positive experiences. There's a lot of buzz around about various USB tweaks to extract better sound from PC or Mac audio. It was cheap enough that I decided to jump into the fray. I started with a Uptone Audio Regen, and immediately heard sonic benefits. So I looked for various other devices, and ended up with an iFi iUSB 3.0 (used at work with my Chord Mojo), iFi iPurifier 2, Audioquest Jitterbug, and just tonight a previously-unknown-to-me product called the Intona USB Isolator. A lot of marketing BS floats about, along with some science, pseudo- or not. Everything I have tried so far, tho…

I was wondering if aftermarket powercables strive to achieve the same effect as a power conditioner and vice versa? I've seen some users only use one or the other so im not sure if they are suppost to compliment each other by using them together, or substitute each other by using only one or the other? Can anyone clarify this? I've been looking at the Shunyata Hydra 4, but was wondering if a better power cable is all I need.

Being an electrician I came across these spec grade receptacles that they were just going to throw out. Knowing that they were not cheap and could possible make a difference to my system; I snatched them up. Skeptical... but I figured it wouldn't hurt to try them out. Well I have to say it was worth the 30 seconds to swap this guy in. Tightening as much as I could, utilizing the bottom half of the receptacle bypassing the tab I heard an improvement right away, not huge but defiantly there. My system seemed to have allot more oomph, Bass is heavier and more pronounced. The whole sound had more weight to it sounding like more power was getting through. These receptacles…

Picked up a "Snap 'N Stack" cookie & cupcake carrier at Costco this afternoon for $18.99 CAD here in Canada. It makes an excellent headphone storage carrier for all you Grado fanboys. Simply swap out the inner cupcake trays with the foam inserts from your Grado boxes. It's a perfect fit!

This is the update to the Dac3 that allows for high rez playback. Its a lot steeper than I thought it would be. Still, I'm tempted. I think someone on the Computer Audiophile forums was going on about how it uses a better USB chip too. (as opposed to what the Dac3 uses) I'd have to get an explanation as to what it does better than the M Audio transit via toslink before buying. Someone talk me out of it.

Cable vendor slapped for unproven claims ? The Register Thousand pound kettle cable won't sound better The Advertising Standards Authority has slapped hi-kit supplier Russ Andrews for claiming its super-duper mains cables could reduce radio interference on the power line. According to the the company, its PowerKords reduce noise in the mains supply because they are wrapped up in woven conductors, enabling the company to charge more than a grand (

So I don't use my setup at home nearly as much as I'd like, so I'm selling off that shit. I've decided to go back to using a portable setup exclusively for both home and library use. My 3rd gen 10 gig iPod is still running strong (after battery transplant), so I'm looking for opinions on iPod line out docks. I don't particularly have the time to make my own (or to learn how to for that matter) and I don't want to spend a shit load of money, because I'd rather spend it on food and tuition. I was thinking about getting one of Alex's, but I just don't think I can dish out the $70 for one right now. Any suggestions or anyone want to make me one? While we're at it, anyone k…

At the risk of being made fun of a bit , I have to admit to you all that I've had concerns with my power situation. I've done some searching and reading around here and elsewhere, and it seems that power conditioning and other power solutions could help to improve a system if that system is in an older home. Well my home is older, and my primary concern is that all of the outlets are NEMA 1-15 ungrounded two prong outlets, so I have to use one of those three prong to two prong converters in order to hook up most anything into the wall, and then those are running through some inexpensive surge protectors. Here are some pics: So should I consider either i…

Developing from the last thread I was on, a simpler and cheaper solution for my speaker rig to get some extra voltage gain I need would be to use xlr-rca adaptors from the balanced output. I understand I don't necessarily get the benefit of the dual differential output from the dacs and output stage of the meridian, therefore lose the common mode noise rejection, but technically, I still get the 2x voltage, correct? Impedance issues should not be a concern, as my moth integrated input impedance is 100kohm and my IC's are very low capacitance. If that all makes sense and you guys are on board, what differentiates a well made adaptor and a poor one? They sure come in …

So i probably need to pickup two more sets of balanced xlr cables and two digital coaxial cables. My gut says mono price, not sure if the price jump to blue jeans is worth it. Figured I would ask around here where people's go to place is for cables on the cheap.

For you guys who might be interested, i got the results in from the lab today of the silver contents of the TWag V1 and V2 cables and have attached a picture of the results, some of you might have seen the green twag thread on head-fi but some V1 cables have been turning green which suggested it had a high copper content so i decided to get it tested which seemed to be a mistake as i've had all sorts of accsations thrown at me since by Lee at Cryo Parts saying i have some hidden agenda and so so but the results have come in today and he has now it seems agreed to replace everyones V1 cables even if they have not turned green so contact whiplash to get yours changed for a …

Ok I have read a bunch from Barry Diament about ball bearing and air bladder isolation and I want to take the plunge. Here is what I am trying to find but without the high audio price tag any ideas where I can find stainless steel cups like that and very hard ball bearings? These are like $180 for a set of three and I am hoping to source something like it for a lot less. Any ideas?

Hi! id love for anyone to share pics and recs of some quality listening chairs. I’ve been using an old wood rocker which actually isnt too bad, but it’s a bit of a family heirloom piece and I should get my ass out of it. As I’ve been looking, the search has been harder than I thought - I’m looking for an armchair but most I’ve found are so bulky they would just dominate the room. Many nice chairs seem to be made for dining table sets or kitchen tables which look odd. I would say I like the mid century style the most but know those can get pricey. Something classy but not bulky, definitely wanting something on the sleeker side but hopefully still comfy. My liste…

So I'm listening to a record, and on a whim I plugged up my Grado 15ft extension cable to give my RS-1 a little room to move (damn Grado stock cable is too damn short damn it). At the end of the side, I stand up to flip the record, and notice a buzzing noise coming through the headphones that was previously undetectable when the music was playing. I unplugged the Grado extension cable (because I've always been suspicious of it) and just plugged my headphones straight into the amp. The buzz goes away completely! My question: how can a cable be so crappy that it actually introduces noise into the system?
