No, that's not a typo, but no, I don't truly mean "at any price" greater than US$200, I just mean this: I recently put my speaker rig back together. The Manley Stingray -- at 12 tubes, 8 of them power tubes -- is just way too warm for a closed room in the summer. I am seriously considering getting this amp as my "summer amp". What is the next step up from that? Obviously, it doesn't have any competition at the US$200 price point, but is there something in the "not much more" category that I should be considering? There seem to be quite a few speaker folk here, so I'm hoping you can help me out. I'm setting up an office system (pretty big office, but I don't listen very loud) and I would like to hear any suggestions you have. In another office I have some older Paradigm Atoms (I think V3) and a powered Paradigm subwoofer. It's nice, but I think it lacks a little treble and spaciousness. I don't want to get another subwoofer, so I'm looking for a set of monitors only. The bass response is less important to me than the treble and dispersion of sound. Ok let me explain how my speaker rig is currently setup. I have the APL 3910 and the Modwright 9100ES going into the two of the inputs on the Modwright SWL 9.0SE. The modwright pre's outputs are connected to the D-Sonic power amp. Now on to where the problem(s) come into play. I also have my denon 4308ci recievers front channel pre-outs connected to the HT Bypass input on the Modwright pre. The ht bypass input essentially ignores the volume control on the modwright allowing the volume to be controlled by only the reciever. Hey Speaker Kids: Don't I remember reading that the *L2 series of Quad speakers got worse reviews then their previous L series? Reason I ask is there are these demos for sale on Audiogon: http://cls.audiogon.com/cgi-bin/cls.pl?spkrmoni&1206234899 I could put this on my desk next to my monitor, and power them off the other speaker outs on my 840A. But if my memory serves me, I'd be better off waiting for a regular 11L (or 12L if I want to go active).

Anyone ever heard Dali speakers before? A positive review of the Ikon 6 in HiFi News a few months back, as well as an interview with the owner of the company in a more recent issue, has me interested in their products.

Anyone here know cheap speaker cables with small/skinny spade plugs? My McIntosh 2100 has tiny speaker taps (there's a pic of it around here somewhere) and most spades won't come close to fitting, unfortunately.

After years of only Headphone listening, I'm finally jumping on the speaker party. Finally got it to work. Of course I have to pull the amp out when I'm actually listening so the cord reaches the outlet, I'm using an ipod as source, and monster speaker cable, but it sounds amazing. I played the theme from shaft and sitting extreme (EXTREME) nearfield it sounded like I was actually sitting next to the hi-hat. The placement is awful obviously, that little green thing in the corner is my bed, which is touching the other side wall. So there is plenty of room for improvement. Eventually I will make stands or something so they can be placed at my desk, but they are just way too heavy (and so is the amp) to be supported by it.

I've got a great pair of speakers in the Alon Lotus SE's. They do so much right and are untouchable (IMHO) in the used under $2k category but I have been chasing the horn dragon since attending VSAC a few years back. Best sound at the show for me was a toss up between the GoTo horns and the modded Altec Voice of the Theaters that Exemplar was running. The presence was downright scary and they were super fast. OK, so I'm trying to build a stereo system from scratch for the gf. So far, I managed to find a pair of used Maggie MG10s, but I still need a dac and amp for an htpc as source. I need something that I can move with relative ease yet still give me halfway decent sound, so I guess monitors are where it's at. 1) The room: The red outlines the living room; there is no separation between it and the kitchen. Monitors will have brick in the rear facing towards regular wall paneling/drywall (or whatev). 2) The budget: roughly $2,000. The only thing I've got taken care of is the source. So my parents are looking to upgrade the entertainment room (still using an old 32" tube tv). They've settled on the Samsung 52" A650 model and they asked me to look up what budget receiver to buy. I'm thinking something around $300 (??) would be fine for them. Do you guys have any suggestions? They don't need all the bells and whistles. They just need something simple that works. So I find myself listening to a lot of tunes while browsing the internets, either through streaming radio (archive.org, grooveshark, etc) or foobar, all through my $11 logitech speakers, since I don't always feel like strapping on headphones. I'm planning on using my ?22 as a preamp with McIntosh MC2100 and Eminent Tech LFT-8b. Just wondering if anyone around here knows how ?22 stacks up as a preamp. So what was the consensus for this -- the question being, what's the best cheapest "totable" speaker dock/pair of actives/whatevs for the iPod. AudioEngine A5's? Quad 12L? Martin-Logan CLX? Bose? I guess the single thing I would miss the most is not distorting at medium volumes in the mid-field. Any 2.1 systems worth looking at that have any decent bass? Hi all, I'd appreciate your help on the following: I have medium pile carpeting over an uneven floor in my listening room. My old Apogee Centaurs used to have spikes and they were always a nuisance because it was so hard to reposition. After those speakers died (RIP - I loved them!), I have since acquired a pair of used Meadowlark Shearwater Hotrods which I'm very happy with, but they didn't come with their spikes. I am noticing now that the left speaker's back left edge is tilted back a bit because of my uneven flooring under the carpeting. Now I'm missing those spikes I used to hate.
