The versa is probably a perfectly reasonable car if all you need is something to get around in a city, and don't want people breaking into it to steal stuff, or key it, or whatnot. These days, even a really shitty car is better than ok cars were 20 years ago.3 points

I've replaced the J79 closest to the front panel now. Seems to have done the trick, offset is now normal on the right channel. No extra noise so far either. Thanks for the help Craig & JoaMat.3 points

Candidly, it's a shitbox that only exists to be an option in the market for buyers that can't afford anything better. If the budget can possibly stretch to a used Hyundai Accent, Honda Fit or Mazda 3, she'll probably be both safer and happier down the road.3 points

No, that would be something Cavalli would try...i.e. rather stupid and sound like shit.3 points

Round two of my DIY 'stats. Again using SR-X driver shells but now with my own bias rings (laser cut aluminum) and 1.4um film. This is more of a test bed for different glue and coating ideas but I have to say it sounds bloody awesome. I haven't received a large shipment of custom earpads so these are just using what I had sitting here. Alternating between some cheapo Fostex TH900 clones off ebay and A-T leather units. The sound changes a bit with the different earpads but not by a great deal. I did try some old SR-007 pads and I didn't like them at all. The thin, non-angled, A-T pads are excellent with this setup. The sound is very lively, energetic and punchy. I'm also narrowing down on the kind of soundstage I like, small but very precise. Now the small drivers will never beat the larger ones in terms of bass output but the super stretched 1.4um film is pretty impressive here. I don't find them bass anemic at all even though they clearly roll of earlier than the 007's. Next steps are more tests and I'm finishing up some new driver designs. Not the cheapest option but I'm going to try to make as many prototypes as I can so I can test back and forth easily. Guess I'll need some more storage space for the headphones then... In other news, I was looking for some earpads earlier and came across the Mr. Speakers Electrostatic pads.... now what the fuck are they smoking? Huge internal area for an electrostatic? This is the same amateur hour as King Sound.3 points

American Gods, earlier. I don't think an adaptation of this, one of my favorite pieces of contemporary fiction, could be better. Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, now. A movie I watch on occasion. I'm a nut for the age of sail, and I think it was marvelously made. It did look better on the big screen than it does on my TV, but I imagine I have more resolution than indifferently calibrated 35mm. I wish more of these movies had been made, as O'Brian's books had a surfeit of wonderful vignettes and stories, most of which would be well suited to the big screen, and Russell Crowe was never better suited for a role. Maybe someday we'll get an excellent big screen adaptation of Horatio Hornblower.2 points

It seems like I've offended a couple of you all. Please know that was not my intention and I apologize that my initial post didn't follow Head Case etiquette. I feel badly that I started off that way. I'm of course happy to address the questions you all have raised, but of course if you're still uncomfortable with this request for any reason I'll try and figure out another way to gather the data I'm looking for. -Why's the link a .com instead of an .edu? The business school students at UCLA Anderson School of Management have accounts with a survey/data analytics company called Qualtrics, you can read about them here if you'd like: https://www.qualtrics.com/about/. -Who are you actually doing product research for? I'm in a class called Sales & Channel Management. The assignment was to pick an industry you're interested and analyze consumer buying behavior. I love hi-fi audio, but am really just beginning my learning (if that wasn't already very obvious... ha), so I'm hoping to understand what factors people who know what they're talking about use to evaluate headphones for the paper and for my own benefit. -@Wink, your Scotch questions: A: Macallan 18, B: Oban 10, C: Bank Note 5, D-N: Johnnie Walker Red -@Ausberger, your concerns about professionalism: Again, my apologies. Since this survey is for my own academic purposes and not for a client/Board, etc. I figured it was alright to make the request in a more informal manner.2 points

I've been playing a bit with the design. Trying to keep it to only +/-450V rails + filaments. I also wanted to see if I could keep the servo. Here's what I came up with. The 6DJ8's anodes are sitting at about 67V. I think this works well, but could easily shift the operating point for these. Q9 & 10 are dissipating about .46W, but we could do a thermal pad on the top of the board and should be good There's still some tweaking on some of the parts. Also, thought to do the 47 ohm hum bucker resistors to ground on the filaments. I've gotten the 200V supply down to about 5mA so not to bad on the pass fet (1.25W). I would embed this with each channel and mount to the heat sink. Could probably use FQPF8N80C here instead. The servo uses the HV opamp we use in the PS, etc. I'm running about 1mA though it. Models well, but need to test this. I've also brought the bottom up with the 400K resistor so we could use lower voltage transistors in it. Right now is sits at about 40V between R34 and R9. The output is sitting around -4V. I'll need to play with this a bit more, though this isn't a real issue. Definitely worth a build. Thanks Kevin EDIT: @JoaMat Have you finished building this yet EDIT 2: I'd love to experiment with the CCS with batteries as well.2 points

She bought the Honda Shitbox[emoji769] before talking to me again. I'm OK with it -- $3500 for a relatively short term car with minimal driving isn't too risky. And it is the 1.8L SL model Shitbox[emoji769] so it has fancy keyless entry, power locks and windows, and GPS and such. Ooh, doubling down on K cars is really amazing! Must have bought them on the same day. My buddy from Texas had one in my first years as a lawyer. We always called it the FBI standard issue unmarked car, and eventually a car raced up next to us at a stop light and asked if we were cops. When we said No, the dude looked panicked and took off looking for an actual cop.1 point

Thanks guys. Yeah, a little quiet would be nice, for a while. This might finally get my landlord to install the camera system which he bought, but never unpacked, so at least maybe I have that going for me. Which is nice. I'm just glad I stayed up so late watching a movie, last nigh, though the door to my unit would have been a lot harder to get into than the main door, since I have a deadbolt and a bar, and there is no window in it.1 point

I say, if it's safe and reliable, cut your loses. Gals her age can make some crazy car decisions based on everything but the car itself. I've had a few GF's who had insanely bad cars that they just loved. Chris, congrats! Looks like you have some talent there.1 point

Apparently there have been a spate of burglaries in the area. Cops must have had a patrol here, because the cops were here in less than three minutes. Big marks in the plate on the front deadbolt. My description of the perpetrator was less than helpful, I'm sure.1 point

I think I just thwarted a break in to the apartment building. Calling the police, now. For the would be thief's honor, I would also have run away if I saw me charging, in boxer-briefs and a tank-top, towards the front door of a place I was trying to crowbar open. I'm glad I was still awake, and had taken my wireless headphones off, in prep for going to bed.1 point

My earlier response was influenced by my son's successful tournament results yesterday so after further (sober) consideration I must say I am quite surprised by your flippant and unprofessional request. If you are in fact a Marshall Business School student, I cannot believe they have not taught you basic business etiquette as yet. If you ever have the opportunity in the future to make a request or presentation to your board of directors or a prospect client and you proceed in that manner you will most likely be tossed out on your ear. Or is your current protocol to use snapchat and texting in business communications? Really?1 point

Beautiful piece of work, Kerry In the recent months I've been slowly working on my T2, ended up rebuilding the entire amp board with mostly new parts. Just in the off chance that it was something in the board itself which caused the noise I was hearing. Thankfully nothing blew up, the batteries adjusted to 741V, and it plays music. I could still hear a background noise in it though. Having listened to George's T2 as well I was all but convinced this is just the normal noise level for this amp. I asked JoaMat about his solid state inputs for the T2, and he was kind enough to send them to me to test out (thanks!). Amazingly enough they worked. The amp is still not utterly dead silent, but it's to the point where it's below the background noise level of my room (which is as close to silent as I can make it). I've also ordered some heatsinks for the 2SC3840s so I wouldn't have to worry about them getting too hot. With either input set though, I've been having some sporadic noise on the right channel. Sometimes it's a random noticeable "pfff", sometimes it gets stuck noticeably louder. The latter is usually solved by unplugging/replugging in the headphones. Very strange. Aside from an overlooked loose connection or a bad solder joint somewhere I'm not sure what it could be. Anyway please excuse my blurry photos.1 point
