Here is a rather unique & rare planar headphone : Rotel RH-930 back-electret headphones. This is an OEM version of Toshiba ?HR-910.? The wikiphonia entry suggests 910 but the pics on this japanese site are suggest hat it is OEM version of HR-810. The transformer is built into the TRS plug & so it can be used with usual dynamic amplifiers. The transformer plug has three settings- H, M & L The driver is 65 mm. No backwave damping here. Most electrets are considered infereior to the 'electrostats' but back-electrets are a bit different. Check this wikiphonia link for electret driver principle: About the Sound : The first thi…

Ok, so I had a pair of Koss UR-40 headphones and broke them. Now I am in the market for a new pair. I am not a big audiophile but I do like what I am listening to to sound good. I have a larger head (mainly in the width) as well as medium to larger size ears. I like my headphones to completely surround my ears. Anything sitting directly on my ears tends to become uncomfortable after a little while. I am also looking for something lightweight. I don't really want to notice them on my head. The headphones will be used primarily for listening to music on my PC with occasional use on my phone for mp3 playback. I listen to a range of music from classical to heavy me…

I really just want to hear these, there's been so much frustration for me revolving around them, and I've never even heard them. It seems every time I try to get to a meet where they'll be I manage to be forced to miss out, so if anyone could give me a loan I'd be really greatful. I'll pay shipping etc both ways if necessary. Thanks!

hi I spent to years creating this baby but if I were to apply my old rule of "what to keep" in an audio rig then the whole headphone side would have to go. here is the rule: if a certain component gets less than 10 percent of playing time, then It is not worth keeping, no matter how good a deal it was or how much it is worth. The thing strangely is that ever since i hooked up my M-Audio DX4 speakers to the VDA-2, the sound has been satisfactory enough so that I don't feel like I want to switch to my headphones and do the whole "cable" and volume/zana deux thing. so my at home listening is now 85 percent or more speakers. the other development is that I've gone b…

I was able to listen to the GMP 435 S thanks to the ongoing loan program in Head Fi. I received the cans on January 8, 2010. This is not my first experience w/ a German Maestro headphone, having previously listened to the GMP 8.300 D. I do not know how many hours of burn-in this unit has; they should have plenty of burn-in since it has gone through several HF members before reaching my hands. Since I have no way of knowing and since I will be able to keep them for two weeks I will start by burning them in for 100 hours or so. For now straight out of the box my initial impressions are: Like: - Very lightweight - Extremely comfortable, plus it easily adjusts w…

I am surprised there has not been much of a talk of the Focal Clear headphone here yet. I bought a pair from Justin a few months ago during a promotional sales. It’s an impromptu buy mostly prompted by Tyll’s review and the fact I had just built a SS Dynahi. Don’t ask me why! To cut to the chase (my personal opinion of course), this is my favorite dynamic headphone I have heard to date. I agree with just about everything Tyll said about it. It just sounds “right”. Probably best overall in terms of reproducing the tonal and timber of instruments. It reproduces a well recorded piano as convincingly as I have heard from headphones. I own a pair of Elear and …

Hi, I'm looking for some IEM recommendations. My current IEMs (that I really like) are Etymotic ER4S. I really enjoy them for many types of music, but they're not amazing for all types of rock. I think they do Radiohead very well, but Tool, or Children of Bodom? Not so much. Also, I don't really have much of an opportunity anymore to use my full sized set ups (RS-1, HD650, HD595, HD590, AKG K701s), and I'd like some variety. I've had the Shure SE530 before (lost them- fell out of my pocket...), but I didn't actually like them that much. I tried them with the various inserts, but they were never really excellent, imho. What I really like about the ER4S are …

Hello, I'm considering buying the akg k242's. Does anyone own or tried these cans and if so, what did you think? They retail for $279, any other brands in the $250-$300 price range that are better? Thankyou for your time and consideration, Newtuber

Hi all, I should buy a pair of in-ear headphones, High-end (120 to 200 €) for my good old creative zen x-fi 16GB. Whereas I usually listento classical music, jazz, old rock and healthy, in essence, I need some earphones quite linear, and not the usual unbalanced bass! the choice is between these: Sony MDR EX600 Sony MDR EX-700 HiFiMan RE-262 Shure SE315 What I need is a justified comparison between the selected models. Thanks to all

When it rains it pours... I did a potentially stupid thing yesterday (took off the cover/earpad on the HD580 while music was playing) and now there seems to be some distortion* on the left side. It is definitely the headphones (I have switched out the amp/dac). Could this be anything more than getting some fuzz hair on the driver - I don't see anything obvious with the naked eye - or could there be some other damage since the driver was being used when I removed the cover? If there is some dust or hair, how do I get it off, especially if it is not obvious where it is? *I think it is distortion. When playing low bass, it buzzes a bit like really cheap speakers …

Hey guys, At the last meet, I really enjoyed the k340's. They sounded great out of various setups, especially the zana. The bass was quite full and deep, I personally did not hear any issues or lack of. It was a headphile modded version though. I would really love to pick up a set. I have no idea though what I should be looking for. I have read about different versions. There seems to be an assortment of mods that can be done to improve performance, which I haven't quite grasped on. Ideally I would love to pick up a used set modded by a reputable user, just need to know what to look for and/or what questions I should be asking. Thanks guys.

I just bought a pair of these from Beach Camera (refurb) and initially I am not too impressed with them. I find them to be bassy and a bit bloated and lacking in midrange definition. Reading the mod thread on HF, it sounds like this mod would do what I think these need, but I was wondering if anyone here had done this mod and what your impressions were with it? Or would I be better off just getting rid of these? I was looking for an inexpensive closed can for home use; I need something that doesn't leak sound to disturb others in the room. I am driving these with a Dynalo, so plenty of power.

I'm having trouble with intermittent signal loss due to problem at strain relief/cable entry. If I hold the cable near the strain relief and twist it, I can get the signal back, so naturally I'm guessing that something is loose. The problem is that I have no idea how to take the strain relief apart, let alone any experience with a soldering iron to fix it. Does anyone have a suggestion on where to get this fixed? I've noticed that Yama's is not the best place to go, and besides this pair is beyond its Japanese-only warranty period. I'm cool with a whole recable or something like that, but I don't see any examples of work done on any of the small-time headphone cabling sho…

What current production Audio Technica headphones are closest in sonic signature to the leatherhead? Basically: a nice extended frequency response in both bass and high frequencies, no weird humps or lumps (at least, not extremely so); closed; smooth in the midrange, really smoov. ATH-W5000? I missed the boat on the leatherhead, and am regretting it. Yes, I could buy used, but in the meantime...

I will ask this here... Where is the best place to purchase these. Best price with warranty or just the best price. Are these so reliable that you need not concern yourself with the warranty? As an alternative I am thinking about the "Stax srm-t1w stax tube amp/headphones" what price would be reasonable for this set? Thanks

So we are going to San Diego for vacation Saturday and it will be Molly's first airplane. Which means we need distractions. I've got some Disney classics and some kids tunes loaded up on the iPad, which means headphones. She turns 3 in August. They need to be comfy enough where she won't mess with them, small enough to fit a 3 year olds head, and cheap enough where I won't sweat it when she break them. Go.
