Grok Headphones in Fullness

  1. Hey y'all, I wonder if you can help me out with a question. I love the way my Beyer DT990s (2005, 250 ohm) sound, especially for acoustic music. I find them a bit fatiguing when I listen to metal though, and I suspect this is due to their (according to my ears) somewhat enhanced sparkle in the treble region. My present amp is just the headphone out in my NAD av receiver - nothing fancy, but many people seem to like the headphone outs from NAD. For a source, I use either the NAD T534 multiplayer or the Playstation 1. So, what do I need - proper amplification or a different headphone? Or different source? I am kind of new at this hobby, and have not been able t…

I've just recieved a pair of lightly modded (bass heavy) K340's in the post today and after 7+ hours with the sound still improving I am wondering how long yours usually take to warm-up and in particular whether getting them modded by headphile shortens this time ? As these continue to play they are becoming better balanced, much more detailed and far more responsive to the music. It's becoming quite addictive to listen to The K340's have had the 'screen mod' done and I've added some dampening to the outside rear face of the cups but are otherwise as stock. I am driving them from the 1/4" of apogee mini-dac, all components in my signal chain are past 600+ of bur…

So I just read Darth Nut's review of the O2s, and wow, it is without a doubt the best review of a piece of audio equipment I have ever read, hands down, no contest. What really blows my mind is how conceptually clear the review was. He basically articulated a coherent conceptual framework for audio review and applied it to an actual piece of audio equipment in a consistent, logical manner and backed it up with supporting evidence. It combines both his subjective perceptual experiences and his concepts in a way that shows the reader his thought process. Honestly this should be required reading for anyone interested in describing audio equipments.

As your local ATOWF die-hard member, I guess I'll have to bring this up. Not that it's special or anything. Just something worth looking at. The pictures, that are. Worth buying if you have globs of money to play with. (Many people do tend to enjoy the ES7.) http://www.audio-technica.co.jp/products/hp/ath-esw9.html

Was wondering if anyone had experience with either? I'm getting my rs1's recabled with silver dragon. I had this cable on senns way back when and liked them alot. Was wondering if anyone had experience with a setup like this. Going to be using them with my extreme platinum, and microdac. Mostly was motivated to do this since i like how my silver cabled hf1's sounded, and i know this cable is probably alot nicer then the headphile one (or atleast similar). I tend to like how my rs1's sound alot more recently, and thought it would be a step in a better direction (and fun atleast).

I got a question (or a few...). Would buying a pair of SR60s be a good way to see if I liked the Grado 'sound' so to speak? Also, would it be a good way to tell if Grado headphones were comfortable for me or not? Or are all the lines of Grado cans different?

I'm looking for some good, cool looking over-ear headphones to get. I'm currently looking at these, because of how they look, they seem to be pretty good, and the cords are pretty sick: Amazon.com: V-MODA Cross-fade LP Over-Ear Headphones (Gunmetal Black): Electronics Amazon.com: V-MODA XFLPR-ROUGE Crossfade LP Over-the-Ear Headphones (Rouge): Electronics The only problem is, the reviews say that they are mostly for dance music. They're on sale, so I was wondering what opinions you had, or a comparable set for the price. I mostly listen to music like Forever the Sickest Kids, All Time Low, Disney, Nevershoutnever, The Maine, etc. Thanks.

  9. I am thinking of getting another pair of AKG K271 again. I used to own them and mostly liked them. I think I remember that they were not quite as smooth as I would have liked in the treble and many a tiny bit lacking in bass but overall them were pretty neutral and very comfortable. Is there another pair of closed (full sized, comfortable) headphones that I should look at? I have the a pair of Thunderpants but don't love them and would like something more neutral. I have a couple of supra-aural cans (Sennheiser Momentum and Audio Technica ESW9) and I am not interested in those. I guess I also have a pair of Audio Technica ATH-900ltd that I let Tim use. I also …

  10. Hi Everyone. There is one FS right now and I wondered how much one was worth. The seller said that he paid a premium for his and I didn't know how much one in that type of condition is worth? I'm looking to purchase it, but he didn't list a price. I'm interested in these since it seems that a lot of people like them. I do love my L3000s . Here is the link to his sale http://www.head-fi.org/forums/showthread.php?t=265122. Thanks for your help Here are some pics that he posted:

The Stax Omega 2's are headphones I've been interested in for a long time, and lately I've been getting the urge to buy a pair. Thanks to pricejapan a new pair would only cost about $1500 which is far cheaper they are from US Stax dealers. A few things are holding me back from pulling the trigger: 1) I'm perfectly happy with my current L3000 based rig, at most an O2 rig would be complimentary 2) The reported lack of bass impact compared to dynamic phones has always been a concern. I'd like to hear peoples opinions on the O2's and any comparisons to your favorite dynamic phones would be very helpful.

So if I... Oh God, I can't even believe I'm asking this... If I were to hunt an HP2, does anyone know of a secret stash of them selling for something south of $1,500?

  14. No, I didn't get a pair of L3Ks or W5Ks. But I had been thinking about downsizing my office rig for a while. Having the dedicated DAC, Lunchbox and HD-600s seemed to be a little much. Lately I haven't been using them much at all, and figure it was time for a change when I came across a pair of ATH-EW9s for sale over on Head-Fi. Sure it's still overkill for clip-ons, but first impressions are pretty positive, with the mids especially sounding pretty sweet. They seem to fit my ears well and lock into a position that results in more bass than I was expecting. And needless to say, they look great... The color of the cherry is very deep, and depsite being used, the finish is i…

  15. K 340 Absolutely top class stereo headphones employing the two-way design concept. Each earpiece contains two different kinds of transducer system. One dynamic and one electrostatic system combine together to form an integral transducer system. The result is convincing: full, clear bass down to the lowest end of the audible range is reproduced by the dynamic system; transparent, neutral and brilliant treble by the electrostatic transducer. In the K 340 a crossover network is not required. Both systems are connected directly and acoustically tuned to avoid undesirable phase shifts or uneven frequency response in the cross-over region. Therefore, there is no loss o…

So I was thinking we could create some sort of synergy list. Basically, combos that work well? There are a few threads on Head-Fi of "ultimate rigs", but how about a list that also includes non-ultimate gear. Haha. Or generalizations (for example, the A-T woodies work well with blah blah). Of course, everyone's opinion is different so basically your list reflects your own opinion, and this compilation will be for fun. Medium-class rigs could also be noted. So for an example, devwild and a number of other members like the SA5K with the M^3 even though this setup isn't as high-end as a SDS XLR and HD650. The focus is synergy so this isn't necessarily limited to the highest…

What do you think? Should I jump on the HE90 without ever auditioning it (a chance which I'll never get anyways)? I'm a huge fan of the HD 650, favourite headphones probably, warts and all, and also liked the O2 very much when I heard them decently amped. Somebody offered the HE90 to me at a fair price with the Stax adapter. The seller also offered me a KGSS DX tuned for the HE90 as an optional buy, any thoughts on that? Just please talk me into or out of it. Thanks and sweet forum by the way.

  19. I was hoping somebody could help me out here. Currently I use Phillips SHE9503/10 in-ear earphones. They get the job done, and I felt as though I got a bargain with them. Im definitely happy with those. However my listening experience has lessened of late. I find I take too long putting the buds in my ears, and a lot of times when turn my head the wires would catch on my jacket button, making me start the process of fitting the buds back in my ears. And sometimes I feel them sliding out so I have to constantly adjust. All the while my song is being played and im not listening to it properly. Anyway, because of all this I was thinking about replacing them with headphones. …

So, I've seen some oblique references to "Duggeh's" surrounder (I think). What's the story? It's not like they don't exist. To wit: Zalman; Tritton; I'm pretty sure I've others.

Its announcement has seemed to have been ignored here, but IMO, this is a very special headphone. I own the W1000X, and acknowledge its faults, but there is no comparison between the two. If you love opera, female vocals, chamber music, etc. I am sure you will love the W3000ANV.

I've been in a state of bliss over the last week since getting my HD650s with the Headroom Balanced Amp. I'd forgotten how much fun it could be to listen to music. I'm so happy that I just spent $5,000 on a CD player, which has convinced my friends that I've gone over the edge. And then it happened... I noticed a really persistent ringing in my ears. Like 12 hours long. I've tried to be really easy on the volume, but it seems like the headphones don't "come alive" until they hit a certain sweet spot, which may be a little more loud than my ears should be listening to. A question for long time listeners--am I going to have to spend the next 10 years keeping the volum…

  25. Hi guys, during the last five years, so many new TOTL headphones appeared in the market that I got totally lost how they compare. Because every brand claims that its own TOTL headphone is the best of the world. But also reviewers and people from the forums claim very different views. This is of course quite normal and maybe opening this thread might be very silly as things might have been said thousands of times already here. However, as a newbie on this forum I did not find real impressions especially on the HifiMan SUSVARA, especially when compared to STAX. And in addition to the headphones themselves, there is this multiple-headphone amplifier discu…
