I Can't Hear You, Speaker Man, I'm Listening to My Headphones

  1. Started by DefQon,

Mind blown and this is ESL based speaker coming from the same company that manufactured your computer monitor. http://www.ecinews.eu/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=2258:the-benq-portable-electrostatic-speaker&catid=14&Itemid=300690 http://www.digitaltrends.com/home-theater/benq-evolo-first-ever-electrostatic-bluetooth-speaker/

Hi, I am behind about 4 years, but apparently these are nice speakers. The lowthers have a new home, and the quads should be a nice fit. At one point there was a dealer that a lot of you guys went through for a nice price, that I can't remember, but if you had another source, let me know.

(large pic) https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/1168044/headphone%20rig%202014/Stands-10-30-14-2.png This morning I noticed a loose section of the gasket on my speaker. Where the jigsaw parts meet. I very lightly pressed it back on to the sticky backing, but am not sure if the back is something fragile or not. Anyone know how big a deal this is?

These should go well with my Arcam C31/P1 monoblocs... pity about the price, though. I'm currently running Acoustic Energy Aegis Two floorstanders. http://www.pmc-speakers.com/products/consumer/twenty/twenty26 I heard the older FB1i at a dealer paired with Arcam electronics and it was a great match. Initial reports from the Bristol show last weekend seem to be enthusiastic. I'll take mine in Amarone.

I'm very interested in the Tekton Lore. Has anyone heard these? Thoughts on powering these with solid state, specifically the McIntosh MA5100?

  7. Started by postjack,

Whats the deal with this speaker? Anyone heard one? One of my common complaints about modern audiophile speakers is their inability to rock, and one thing to blame this on is very few speaker manufacturers produce speakers with large woofers anymore. We're lucky to find even 6.5" woofers, most seem to top out at 5.25". The Klipsch Heresy III has a big ass 12" woofer, and reviews of this model, which is still in production and "reasonably" priced at about $1600/pair, are generally pretty good. They rock out well, meaning nice midbass thump, at the expense of refinement and resolution. Just curious if any headcasers have any personal experience with these speakers.

Interesting article on El Reg http://www.theregister.co.uk/2014/07/02/feature_the_future_loudspeaker_design/ We need to talk about SPEAKERS: Soz, 'audiophiles', only IT will break the sound barrier Design, DSPs and the debunking of traditional hi-fi Covers a lot of ground, the importance of time domain accuracy, and the relationship to the human hearing system. Some of the ideas may be applicable to headphones (eh, Tyll?) Author seems to have the credentials. Sound opinions, or just clickbait? (the commentards seem to have bitten) Discuss

  9. I have been looking for some small active speakers for my room so I did a whole lot of research and ended up auditioning studio monitors at a local store. I listened to the following: Adam A5x,A7x JBL LSR2325P Presonus Eris E8 Yamaha HS7 Neumann KH120 ... And I didn't like them. I tried moving around the test room, aligning my ears to the tweeters, various types of music (including some tracks I know well), nothing seemed to work. I found this really frustrating as I had read over and over again that studio monitors should present an accurate sound and have a linear frequency response. The most convincing to me was the Neumann KH120, but I just didn't like the …

  10. Looking to get a set of active studio monitors. Having a hard time deciding between a set of coaxial's such as Equator or PreSonus or ribbon's such as Emotiva or Adam. Both have their pros and cons, but there is no way for me to try all of them in my office. Budget is about $1,500.

  11. So a friend I know from work has a spare (I think) pair of these, and his wife is wanting less clutter in their place. (I get that.) He knows I'm into gear and audio and whatnot, and we've been talking for years about stuff. He asked me if I'd be interested in this pair, and we talked about trading something, perhaps. I think he'd be willing to take my pair of Senn 580/600 grill/650 cable for this pair of speakers. I've read some mostly-positive reviews, but, well, "internet reviewers" and all. It seems these were out at least around the turn of the century. I was looking at just getting some stands for the Wharfedale Diamond II bookshelf speakers I got at a thrift shop…

With the new tubes, the Rogue has been singing without any noise or static. I don't know what the age of the old tubes was or how many hours they have on them but don't care as it was probably one of them. The speakers and the amp were originally in my parent's home in a 15x21 room so heat was never really a concern. Currently my bedroom is 11x13 and having the amp on most of the day is starting to make the room quite warm. I am probably going to eat the cost of the new tubes and stick the amp on audiogon - as much as I love it, I can't stand the room getting that warm anymore. Any suggestions for a similar amp perhaps that doesn't release that much heat - open to ss or t…

  13. Started by crappyjones123,

I turned on the amp after about a week and a half of work being done on the house and attached is a short clip of what I heard. Recorded with the iPhone mic about 2 inches away from the driver but its a pretty close representation of the issue. 1. I turned it off after 10 minutes of warm up and it still making the same noise. 2. Turned it on again and let it warm up for 15 minutes. Still the same noise. Biased the tubes. Still the same noise. 3. The noise is equal in both channels from what I can tell. 4. The noise if constant with two different sources. 5. All tubes are lit except for 12ax7s. I don't see anything in them but I don't know if this…

I’ve just finished building an EUVL F5X amp and now I’m after a decent set of speakers for $3500 which is pretty much my limit. The amp is rated around 50 watt stereo in 8 ohms. Short listed these after a couple of days searching and racking my brain... Reference 3A MM De Capo BE Proac Response 2 Usher Tiny Dancer BE 718 I owned a pair of Reference 3A royal master controls around 16 years ago, I loved them with a SET 300b amp at the time. Proac and Usher I have no experience, just read some favourable reviews. Maybe the Usher is a bit power hungry.. I dunno. Any help appreciated.

I decided to get some decent set of nearfield speakers to have on the desk next to the wall and I was thinking in something like the Audio engine A5 or Adam A5x. Don't know if I can get better for the money, what do you guys suggest?

  16. Started by faust3d,

Does anyone here know anything about these speakers. Enclosure design looks very interesting on paper, but I was curious if someone heard these. They only have two models it seems.

Recently upgraded from YG Acoustics Carmels to YG Kipod Signature II speakers. Thought at first the BAT amps didn't have enough power, but it's settling in, and they are great together.

  18. Started by HiWire,

I noticed that Acoustic Energy finally released a floorstander model in their Reference Series. My pair of 12-year-old Aegis Two speakers (made in Malaysia) sound pretty good for super-cheap $200 speakers – it makes me wonder what they've done since then. Online reviews of the Reference 1 and the rarer Reference 2 seem pretty positive... has anybody heard them?

I have found myself once again looking at studio monitors to use on my desk (to replace the Audioengine A5 which replaced the Quad 12LA when they broke). I keep going back to Adam, Dynaudio, Focal... I noticed today that BH Photo has them for $750/pair right now. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/696917-REG/Dynaudio_Acoustics_BM_5A_MKII_BM_5A_MKII_7.html That seems like a very good price and I have wanted to try a pair of Dynaudio for a while. I am tempted to get them but I noticed they only have XLR input. Right now, I use the GS-1 as my volume control. I assume the sound, balanced, straight from the ECD-1 would be better but I am not so sure if using th…

  20. Hi, I am looking for a set of cheap bookshelves/speakers that can take a digital input from my tv. I just got a new gt50 for the main viewing family room which has a decent sound bar. The g25 that was there went upstairs to the living room, and the stock speakers are real bad. Would love to just take the optical out from the tv, plug them in the speakers, and be done with it. I could have swore such a thing exists but I can't seem to find it. Thanks! If such a thing does not exist, i could also do a small box that would fit inside an entertainment furniture, that would be able to take a digital in, be an integrated amp of sorts, which could output into normal speakers…

  21. I'm just about done building the Leach amplifier (~100Wrms / channel). I was hoping to get some suggestions for first speakers to match with it, probably in the price range $200-400. All I've got now are some no-name bookshelf speakers. Some floor-standers might be nice, but I really don't know too much about speakers. Thanks, Evan aka bperboy Here's one channel completed. I haven't finished building the other channel yet. Forgive the messy wiring; I will tidy it up nearer to the end of the project.

  22. [This post is too long.] As you may know, one of my Quad 12L actives died. RIP. I have a pair of Audioengine A5 actives to use for now and maybe they will be good enough (I don't use speakers very much - usually headphones) for my limited desktop use. I was thinking that I wanted to get a pair of Adam A3X and I think this is probably what I might get if I went the studio monitor route. Then I remembered how much I liked the Ascend CMT-340 when I owned them (which I only sold because they were way too big and loud for nearfield listening). So I was thinking of going Parasound Zamp + Ascend CBM-170SE instead. (The Parasound ZDAC, Zamp and GS-1 would make a nic…

Any thoughts on these speakers? http://www.parts-express.com/pe/pshowdetl.cfm?&Partnumber=301-980&scqty=1 I'm working my way through Don Keele's papers and the original NRL publications and the theory and results are quite interesting and unique IMO, and the kit while not cheap looks like a great bargain for what you are getting. Not to mention it removes the biggest obstacle I have with DIY speakers: cabinet making. I attached the manual (10 MB), which is not only incredibly comprehensive with respect to the building process but also has lots of measurement and design information. 301-980-audio-artistry-inc-cbt36k-manual.pdf
