So, I've been using MontyPics for years now... Crummy interface for uploading and organizing, but I'd been uploading and using those photos in forums for so long that changing hosting wasn't an option. Well, unknown to me until this morning, they had a complete meltdown over the weekend, had little redundancy and they lost about 99% of my photos going back about 6 years. So, if I have to start from scratch, re-uploading the critical stuff from before, plus continuing to upload going forward, I want things to be a little better this time around on pretty much all fronts. What I'm looking for: An improved interface for uploading and sharing Batch uploading/resi…

Our last year resident is finishing next week and the graduation gift is going to be a laptop she needs. The budget is about 900 bucks (800€). These days I'm not that sure that Toshiba is as reliable as it used to be, nor that all HP are bullshit. Things change too fast, specially if you don't pay much attention. I've looked at several options with 15" screen. Other desirable feature is it's available in pink No especial needs of HDD size, RAM, connectivity... Wifi, good screen and lightweight, that's all, she won't be playing games or editing video. These are my candidates in no special order Dell Inspiron 15 7000 (i5, 256SSD, 8GB, ips screen, GeForce® MX150) I thi…

I've posted some of my initial impressions on another thread, but figured I'd start another thread since there are few Mac users on the forum. Few things - The installation went smoothly without a hitch, even though I took a risk and chose the Upgrade option. No reboot or DVD mounting issues here. Safari runs much better than the beta (duh). No random crashes in middle of surfing and I think it's marginally faster than beta, but I could be imagining that. Stacks are stupid. It may be useful if you only have handful of document/downloads, but that's not the case here. I like the Tiger's folder on Dock better. I love Quick Look - I make multiple revisions of same docu…

I've just replaced my old Iphone 5 battery because the original one was below 65% capacity. I purchased it from iFixit, which is supposed to be good quality, they have an EU store. The replacement process went pretty much forward and flawlessly until I switched the iPhone on. It wouldn't light up. I thought the battery could be empty, so I plugged it into the charger, then the "connect into iTunes" logo appeared: I plugged the iPhone into the MBP, started iTunes, it asked if I wanted to restore factory default or update. I chose update the first time. The thing is now giving some error and won't either update nor restore to factory default. I've repeated the se…

  11. Hi guys I have a problem, I need some suggestions from all the experts and those who have experience in Linux. Before we go any further, I just wanna say a big THANK YOU to you guys for taking the time to help me out. I truly appreciate the help. I'm a total newbie to this so any help you guys can give me would be great! Right, I ran into a problem when trying to install BlueCat Linux. I'm using Ubuntu 8.04.1. My problem is this: root@sanjeev-desktop:/tmp# cd /opt/BlueCat root@sanjeev-desktop:/opt/BlueCat# /tmp/install Installation directory must be empty install: terminating root@sanjeev-desktop:/opt/BlueCat# /bin/ls: cannot access *: No such file or direct…

I no longer feel comfortable traveling with my Logitech Trackman, as that is discontinued and sells for > US$100 on Amazon, much less eBay. And I don't seen an equivalent, although I'll be getting the Logitech wireless thingy to try. So...any recommendations on rugged mice? I want something I can throw in my bag that can endure the abuse I plan on giving it. Especially the buttons. Or should I get a hard clamshell or something to protect it? Not that that will save it from the abuse. I tend to press harder on the buttons or downright bang on them when the computer becomes unresponsive or starts doing something I don't want it to do. Optical or laser? Laser…

  15. Started by CarlSeibert,

Usually (once every five years or so) when I upgrade my home machine/home office server I go over all the distribution options, try out candidates on virtual machines and generally make a considered affair of it. This time, since my machine has collapsed in a cloud of MCEs, I've got to just decide and go for it. I've used Mandriva and basically liked it ever since Fedora forked off from Red Hat. I like KDE and have never warmed to Gnome at all. Which is really why I moved to Mandrake at the end of consumer Red Hat. Red Hat and Fedora were anti-KDE back then. I understand that's changed since. My last upgrade was Mandriva 2007. System management tools and the like…

  16. Well my main rig has a failing motherboard. (tyan)... This thing (when I was bench testing it) I am looking at a new motherboard and CPU (I cannot give up the case). Going with the new Intel i7 3770S chip and an acer z77 board (along with SSD, etc)... Anyone out there running Ivy bridge chip yet? Almost ran to Frys tonight and bought a pile of stuff (in stock), but I am testing my resolve to take my time and just do it right (and save on tax and driving). I can do it, if it is not whisky, I swear. Cheers, Mikey

Warning: complete laptop newb, heads-up. Looking at getting my wife a new laptop, christmas/MBA graduation gift. Budget is $600 max. Biggest application will probably be the new adobe photoshop 8 that I bought her as well, she loves taking pics and the new laptop should be powerful enough to load full resolution pics pretty fast and for her to edit and adjust with ease. We are windows PC people, sorry mac users, and for her, ease of use as well as her picture stuff are her priorities. Thanks.

Recently, I acquired an Apple TV to serve music wirelessly to the ps audio dl 3 dac. When it works, I have no issues. Even the delay/lag problem I was having just stopped occurring after I restarted the macbook air. Perhaps there was a buffer issue. I didn't need to buy and 3rd party software. It works on any kind of audio/video file. However, every time I try to select the Apple TV in sound settings on my MBA, it kills the wireless router. The only way to fix it is to power cycle the router. I am using WPA2 encryption and the problem persists without any encryption schemes as well. Any thoughts on what could be causing this and how to fix it? It kills the internet ab…

  20. I'm starting to accumulate a fair bit of hi-res material in iTunes and much of it is made up of higher-bit rate versions of albums I already have in CD format. What I can't seem to figure out is how to tag these duplicate albums so they will sort and display separately without adding a modifier (like [24/96] or [DVD-A] or whatever) to the Album field -- since doing that screws up LastFM and other apps that pull that data. Sub-fields like Comments, Grouping etc. don't seem to be used by iTunes to distinguish different versions. Any iTunes power users out there?

  21. Started by n_maher,

So I have a mkv file that I would ultimately like to try and get onto a writeable DVD that can perhaps be played in a standard DVD player. I have tried several pieces of software to would presumably at least allow me to transcode the mkv file to avi and therefore make it more "playable" on various HTPCs. For example, my PS3 won't play mkv but will play most avi. So can anyone help. Time really isn't of essence here, I've been working on this on and off for 6 months already. I keep reading page after page that allegedly link to programs like mkv2ps3 and others but eff me if I can even find download links some times.

I've maxed out my 2.4GHz laptop with 4 gigs of memory. OWC has a kit that will take it up to 6 gb. Would this be a waste of time and money or would it be a welcome addition? The laptop is rated up to 4gb, but they have tested the 6gb and said it works.

  24. Started by audiosceptic,

So I decided to upgrade my home file server from a Windows 2003 Server platform to something else. All the server does is serve files to Mac clients and run the Squeezebox Server. DNS and DHCP is performed by my router. No Email or Web serving. The reason I'm upgrading is because the Squeezebox server is running kinda flaky lately and file server speeds are kinda slow for a small Gigabit network. The hardware is semi heavy duty. It's a HP xw8200 workstation with dual 3.2 GHz Xeon CPU's, 6 GB Ram and 1.5 TB of internal disk. I also have a LacIe 4TB estata/FW/USB that's configured as a 3 TB RAID 5 external drive via esata. I recently installed a Linux SUSE 11.3 64-bi…

  25. Started by Salt Peanuts,

With my MBP dead and dying, I'm looking to to build a Windows box based on either 4690(K) or 4790(K). The main purpose of the machine will be for editing photos under Lightroom/Photoshop and gaming. I'm hoping to make it as future proof as possible (not that it's really possible) within the budget. Can anyone here suggest a build/parts list for $1000 (including CPU)? I already have a monitor, mouse, keyboard, and SSD. Thank you for the help. EDIT - And I'm not doing Hackintosh - I don't need this to be more work and it needs to be.
